Pretty Boy Detective Club (TV)

Genres:
Themes: detective, reverse harem, school

Plot Summary: Mayumi Dojima, a second-year student at the exclusive Yubiwa Academy middle school, has lost something - a star she glimpsed just once, ten long years ago. But help is on the way, in the form of the unofficial, secretive, and thoroughly mysterious Pretty Boy Detective Club. Rumored to solve problems within the school (most of which they themselves may well have created) for reasons aesthetic rather than financial, these five gorgeous boys sweep Mayumi into their world of excitement, danger, and overwhelming beauty.
----------------------------------

Oh, man, Maaya Sakamoto in a reverse harem of detectives. It's like Ouran High School Detective Club. Probably won't be as zany, but I'll give it a shot just for her and the detective stuff.

Episode 4

Just thought that I would drop in to say that I appreciate the crossdressing, especially as it looks like the FTM crossdressing is going to continue on. The show keeps using the guy with the legs as fanservice too.

Episode was also kind of interesting for the glamour of the casino, bar of course that I generally think of casinos as dangerous because of that glamour. And what about the scene that just had to linger on the surprise of what she saw, like we could get it easily, but just had to have her repeat it, I am rather enjoying the silly elements of this show.

Episode 12 (finale)

That was a nice ending. In regards to the particular plot, it was apparently something ridiculous like the school might have essentially brought n some middle school hitman to take down the aestheticism of the students as a definitively average student. But in the scheme of the show, it was a plot about one sticking to even that silly aestheticism that one might look back at and cringe for playing at some identity, but don't worry about that. People should be allowed to be their silly selves that makes them feel good, and not have to look back at that time with shame. Enjoy their time in youth, regardless of what they would be in the future.

The end of the show even had what looked like a fast forward for where they would be in the future. Mayumi that spent her time crossdressing as a boy, would apparently become a stylist, working on a woman shown. Michuru who did his fancy cooking at the school, looks like maybe a sushi chef or something as part of a team. Nagahiro as the ex-student president that called a lolicon, I think looks like just an average office worker. The beautiful legged Hyouta who always wore short shorts, was shown as a gym teacher wearing a tracksuit that mostly goes all the way down. The "silent artist" Sousaku, he was shown at maybe the head of a board meeting. And Manabu as the detective leader, what was shown was him in a business suit with a luggage bag on wheels. My take was that even as these ideas of adults that one could think would look back at the ridiculous selves in the series, they shouldn't regret living their beautiful selves in any particular moment. Probably more ashamed to not be try and be that most fun self at that time.

As Manabu alone, should he feel embarrassed that as a primary schooler in the 5th grade, he cross-dressed and did a speech at a student president elections of the middle school, to fulfil his idea of beauty? No, it was beautiful, and not just out of some sense of narcissism, but that he back his friend and told her to be more confident in herself. Also on the note, I want to repeat how much I liked the crossdressing in this series. One might think it be just for comedy purposes, but I don't think it was for comedy, since there was nothing about it being ugly and deviant connected. I wouldn't say it is some part misogyny thing connected to a dislike of femineity, because look at these 'boys'. Femineity or masculinity, pretty and beauty as an aestheticism that can be fun and shared.

I suppose that I should get to some down sides, some ugliness that is. It could occasionally be a bit pretentious, something not at all surprising for a series created by NisiOisin and helmed by SHAFT. It was really not hard to see the same sort of DNA as the Monogatari series, we are talking about the exact same weird high concept and hard to follow mysteries that take unpredictable leaps, and arguably even crazier art decisions. Although I might say that it forgoes some of Monogatari weird art film aesthetic, and puts a bit more focus on the characters. Some of my favourite parts though were probably when it did art shifts, which maybe could feel a bit random, but almost always were kind of hypnotic and interesting.

To make a point specific of note, I had just recently seen Back Arrow during the series try and pull a pretty boy (bishounen) aestheticism thing, but it was far less interesting and more cynical there. This series pretty, and it made pretty boys fun. My rating is going to be Good (7/10), in all honesty it is really understandable if this is not the sort of thing people are into, the NisiOisin SHAFT thing can be a bit much. But despite even this level of rating, I think that it can be a really fun series to watch if you are receptive, at least something worth seeing if it can be your thing. Also, the OP is bangers, both as a song by Sumika, and looks fantastic with dancing pretty boys.

And I barely go into talking about Mayumi, the crossdressing girl who is self identified as scum, and more often than not takes shots at the pretty boys. Like only ever calling Michiru a delinquent.

For those who like anime, it's a good picture that most young people will like - I'm sure of it. The fifth episode reminded me of a time when I was particularly into gambling and preparing for various tournaments. They come in all sizes, but I always dreamed of going to the biggest tournament. To succeed in this business, you need to constantly study all possible information and monitor the different techniques of the game. Information is freely available, but there are closed clubs, which you can get into with a deposit. For example, to improve your skills, you can click here on how to do it. I can already boast big wins and cash prizes.

I loved the first episode of this; just haven't gotten around to watching more.

TOO MANY ANIME. TOO MANY. AUGH.

But these aesthetics and character/background art are *chef's kiss*
