Maybe the TV stations wouldn't go after foreign cartoons so much if the idigenous cartoons weren't...crap?

Spongebob? For the pratfalls and other physical comedy elements maybe? That's all I can come up with.

When has ever protectionism raised the quality of a product?...
Never, it just raises mediocrity, where's the drive to get better is you got you spot secured in the greater order of things by just pumping crap into the airways, not that Pokemon or Spongebob are the paradigm of High Browed Entertainment, but if your local productions can't even beat that.... I feel very sorry for the animation fans living in China.

Eh, the protectionism is obviously just an excuse, and the real reason is that they want to reduce the exposure of people, especially children to foreign cultures and ideas. It was the same in my country during the communist era: western popular culture and lifestyle was deemed to be decadent and most of it was banned... movies, cartoons (with very few exceptions), even clothes and food (blue jeans and Coca-Cola had to be smuggled for a decade, and when they proved to be incurably popular, authorities decided to copy them so people would buy locally produced - and of course inferior - jeans and cola that were carefully designed not to be associated with the west).
And yeah, it's just a four hour ban, but those four hours are pretty much the only time when the audience can see such animation, so... |
