There was a time when I would have been excited to hear this news. But after Yuri Kuma Arashi and Sarazanmai... I just hope that he'll have someone to rein Ikuhara in. These two shows felt more like someone doing an Ikuhara parody than anything more worthwhile.

He does original shows, which is not looked upon favourly by the Production Committee, even if he has a very dedicated following. This is the main problem of his shows nowadays. It doesn't have enough time to develop a grand arc like in Utena. It ends way too quickly.

I thought Sarazanmai was a strong return to form for Ikuhara, so I'm excited to see what he makes next.

heck yeah! I only became a fan after Yuri Kuma Arashi, I haven't seen Utena but unfortunately it's been spoiled for me. I desperately want to watch penguindrum but it's not streaming anywhere and also not for sale anywhere where I can get it!

I really hope that he gets at least 24 episodes. The single-cour series were too rushed.

Don't worry, I don't know that Utena can be spoiled like that. You mean you know how the plot progresses? That's just a tiny part of what makes Utena special. I hope you get to see Penguindrum soon. Meanwhile, that is Ikuhara in the photo? He looks so....normal. |

I loved Step-Incest Isn't Real Incest (Penguindrum), but Bestiality Girls (Yurikuma Arashi) and Gay Kappa Children (Sarazanmai) weren't as appealing to me. Yurikuma wasn't bad, per se, I just got the point already before it ended, so I had no motivation to finish it.

Yeah, I'd still watch Utena it is about the experience.
I liked Yuri Kuma Arashi and Sarazanmai but I would like to see Ikuhara get more episodes to work with. His stuff seems best with some breathing room. |

I don't think that's the problem. Not all stories need grand arcs, it's perfectly possible to convey a message or make a point in 12-13 episodes... and frankly, Ikuhara's later shows felt more drawn-out than anything. No, I think the problem is that Ikuhara has become one of those ~auteurs~ who have gotten lost in the quirks and idiosyncrasies they're celebrated for, resulting in being, at least to me, boring and repetitive. (Also, there's a very fine line between using sexual themes and imagery as symbolism/commentary, and just plain fetishization, and I think Ikuhara has crossed that line too many times. If someone told me that Ikuhara made Sarazanmai to avert accusations of fetishizing lesbians I'd believe it in a hearbeat.) |

Bold of you to assume Ikuhara spends any time at all thinking about internet randos accusing him of fetishization (because they missed the part where Yuri Kuma Arashi was made in large part by an out lesbian), much less making anime to cater to them. Literally half of his anime feature incest - the man doesn't give a damn and clearly just does whatever makes him happy. If you're not here for it, the door is right there. |

Oh wow, I apologize for voicing an opinion that is not the same as yours. But, unworthy as this apparently makes me, I'd like to add a couple of comments... 1. Bold of you to assume that I assume anything, considering I was explicitly talking about a hypothetical scenario. Also, you seem to have missed the part where I was referring to imagery/etc. particular to Ikuhara. Also also, perhaps we should lay off the identity olympics, because not only am I a queer person myself, I also know fully well that someone being queer doesn't mean they're automatically above things like fetishization. 2. Here's two fun things to know about criticism: - it's not something that is done exclusively by "internet randos"; - just because you don't like it doesn't mean it can't be valid. We can have a conversation or even a debate about whether certain criticism applies to Ikuhara's works or not, and if yes to what extent or in what ways... but that requires getting over the stanning and the "IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT GTFO YOU PLEBE" attitude. |

Great, and I am a lesbian, and I don't find anything particularly fetishizing in his works, especially given his history of working WITH lesbians. Or what, are lesbians suddenly capable of fetishizing themselves? I'd love to have a conversation about fetishization if the internet hadn't overused the word to the point where it lost all meaning and no one can agree on a definition or what counts as fetishization and what doesn't. In any case, I DO take an issue with accusing a director of spending 4 years of his life and probably millions of yen working on an anime just to "clear himself of accusations" - which clearly, judging by your case hasn't happened anyway because you chose to be cynical instead. I think at his age, Ikuhara learned a long time ago that trying to please anyone but himself is a futile struggle, hence making an anime composed 50% of butt jokes, regardless what people might think of it. |

That's amazing, so do you speak for all lesbians and other queer people? Has there ever been something you endorsed that another lesbian didn't? ...Yeah, as I said perhaps we should just lay off the identity olympics. (Also.. actually, yes? Why wouldn't they be?)
Right. So considering this reply to what I actually wrote - what I gather from it is that you stan Ikuhara really hard, and take any criticism, no matter how slight or tongue-in-cheek, as an accusation, an insult that you are obligated to stand up against. This makes any further discussion pointless, so... okay? By all means take issue with my cheeky fun-poking criticism of Ikuhara, I'll just go on with my day and continue having my sacrilegious opinions on Ikuhara and his post-Penguindrum works. |
