You need to quit telling me about all this wonderful crap! My DVD cabinet is totally chock-full, I need time to clear some space!
Honestly, that pop-up video thing sounds like a great selling point to me, I'll have to track this down when I have somewhere to put it.

I watched this with Netflix's "watch instantly" feature, but now I feel like I missed out. The DVD extras sound better than the actual anime.

Did someone just say "Roots Search?" Cause I think I just heard someone say "Roots Search." I eagerly await walking into the spleen with the space baby in the future! And you thought the sex scene in Enemy at the Gates was mindblowing.
One of the deadliest aspects to The Humanoid (aside from the coffee endorsements, that's the main part) is that as a side effect of the nonexistent budget, the character's faces all have their, shall we say...Downy moments. This is one of the "finer" screenshot examples. Sure, it's not quite on the level as say, the woman in the last scene of that last episode of the Starship Troopers anime (ooh! ooh! Do that one after Roots Search!), but if anyone looked at me like that, I would RUN. If the DVD extras are better than the anime itself, that admittedly isn't setting the bar all that high. I think the craziest part of the pop-up video notes was when the pink parakeet flew by in one scene, thus prompting a pop-up mentioning the existence of the John Waters film Pink Flamingos. This makes me wonder if anyone who saw The Humanoid then proceeded to track down and watch Pink Flamingos afterwards. It's not easy to make The Humanoid interesting or even fun to watch in a "ho ho, this is hilariously bad" kind of way. It's the sort of terrible anime for which there's not really one particular scene that's so bad that you could take it and show it to people as a clip to demonstrate "boy oh boy does The Humanoid suck." You have to just take in the entire 45 minutes and let the sum total kill you spiritually. As Keanu Reeves once said, time freezes when you're in Hell. And 45 minutes of The Humanoid is an eternity. |

You know, reading through the handful of the Buried Treasure/Garbage entries, it really sticks in my mind how entertainment, and anime in particular, is truly a product of its time. Even if you consider the intangible elements, there are certain things to say 80s or 90s anime that just seem to jump up and down to alert you to the fact.
Only a small amount of material is really able to transcend its production date to become "timeless", and the rest of it is often a fairly clear reflection of its creators' world at that point in time. As for the OAV in question, it definitely seems like it hits most of the required points to be a straight-to-video sci-fi anime from the 80s. I was almost anticipating hearing about a pointless shower scene or extreme bloody violence, as both seem to be staples of that kind of show. |

Honestly, pop-up's like this one should be on everything. Pop-up's are great on dvd's, bad on computers. I think with the right pop-up's almost anything can become watchable. |

Really, the best thing about this one is the coffee banter. It's the closest anime has come to channeling Coleman Francis.

This kinda saddens me...I highly enjoyed the Humanoid, and not for the typical "ha ha, look at all the bad 80's references and the crappy dated animation" or "Yuck, old anime" that seems to permeate every corner of internet anime fandom and really anime fandom at large. I actually truly enjoyed this and most other things that came out of the OVA market of that time that I've seen. It's a shame that the only thing most people recognize is how quaint or how kitschy or how stupid the 1980's were.

I've seen this anime advertised in the CPM catalog a while back and remembered how utterly cliche the plot was just from reading the description. The additional fact that almost nobody talks about this OAV raised another red flag against it.
However...however, I'm a big big sucker for 80's anime where there is lots of cute girls, a lot of ass kicking, and a lot of 80's hard rock. That kind of cheesiness was what really hooked me on anime back when it was still known as "japanimation".
I may just have to watch this for the fact that it has these (or almost all) of these elements.

I still remember the first time I went to an anime themed room, one of the people running it had Humanoid LD with him. So I asked about it and if it was going to be shown, and two of the other people running the rooms gave me this look like they'd just came out of a war or something. Mind you, this was about '87 or so during the all-anime is good days so yeah... can't imagine it being worthy of anything above rental use even now. LOL

It's so nice for someone to represent the older fans out there. Justin's review treats the material within it's proper historical context and judges it fairly. Alot of younger fans would just write it off without giving it the awesome insight that he did. What I mean is that it would have been so easy to just say that the Humanoid just sucked without ever explaining it's place on the 1980s OVA suckitude chart! So many sites feature younger fans who are ignorant of the classic era and don't see the difference between cheese like Humanoid and classics like Venus Wars or Crusher Joe. The anime press needs more writers who are fully educated in ALL facets of anime history and this review was a great example of how that can be done.
