They really killed both the aesthetic and the feel of Boogiepop. I'm finding it hard to get excited for this one. I'll have to wait and see how I feel about it a few months from now when it airs.

The new visual was better than the previous one.
Still kinda wary, but knowing who the director is, I still have my hopes up.

I really like the new visual but I'm not feeling those character designs... we'll wait and see...

Maybe this is how Boogiepop and Others was supposed to be; this having more of a urban mystery Durarara aesthetic than the all-around sepia tones from Phantom.

You could be right. I haven't read the novels and my only experience with Boogiepop is Phantom. Boogiepop and Others could be totally different. But right now I get the feeling that they just redesigned the characters because " this is what characters are supposed to look like these days".

I think that was a popular thing in the early 00s, shows such as the Soultaker, Kino's Journey, Texhnolyze, Raxephon, .Hack//Sign and most likely some others had that, or a similar, look.

OK, I'm a little less worried now, but not not worried. That top image, that's definitely the Boogiepop I remember, the rest ehhhh. I know I can't expect it to be the same sepia-toned designs of 18 years ago, but can they please revisit some of these designs? Especially Touka.

I'm not completely without hope, since that key visual looks good and retains the original feel. But I'm worried the artistic legacy of Boogiepop Phantom won't be maintained in the finished product. The original 'analog hell' aesthetic is the perfect way to stand out in a sea of generic anime.

That's how I feel as well, at least when it comes to Nagi. What bothers me is she doesn't look nearly old enough. She is canonically supposed to look much older than she is. Compare her stronger jawline in Phantom with this design, which looks very generic.
Even if someone wants to chalk her Phantom appearance up to no special talent from the animation staff (which I doubt) but differences in 1990s aesthetics, those '90s aesthetics are still more appropriate for the character than 2010s ones.

Not really, Boogiepop Phantom has a very dramatic sepia, grainy look, it's quite unique.
Kino's Journey is maybe the closest in having some kind of artificial looking grain, but the color palette and atmosphere is quite different. Technoloyze has a similar color palette, but no grain.
I feel like HD and Boogiepop is sort of antithetical, but ironically, giving it a by-the-numbers-LN adaptation might be fitting for the first LN.
