I can actually rent it, but I'm worried about getting stuck with the crap version, too. I'm surprised FUNimation opted to release Aquarion instead of this, too.

It sounds like a great story though sad. I'd really like to watch it- I do believe I think may have seen this on a shelf or at a comic con like five years ago.

I actually remember coming across this in Media Play back in 2001. It immediately caught my attention due to it's unusual presentation, animated anthropomorphic biographies aren't exactly a dime a dozen. It's a shame I didn't purchase it, but when my only source of income was a $5 allowance, I almost never bought anything on impulse.
Anyway, thanks again for another great read. I'm going to try to hunt this down, was the laserdisk version import-only? |

I had watched this on fansub and found it as one of the best movies too but this is not for the average anime viewer and requires some prior knowledge about Japanese animation and animation in general. But another good choice to include it on the archive.
From Pelleas reviews I found also other animated works based on Kenji Miyazawa's novels or biography. The movie Biography of Budori Gusko and the short gemThe Acorn and the Wildcat, which supposedly inspired Hayao Miyazaki to create the Totoro character. The latter uses narration directly from the text. But I cant find both anywhere. There is also another short film in the collection Best of Japanese Independent animation 1995-2005, but this was a collaboration between Japanese and European animators and was mainly for animation festivals |

I looked into this after the Night on the Galactic Railroad article, but never picked it up. Guess it's time to resume the search. Amazon seems to have it available used, but the product entry lists the release date as 5-29-01, which lines up with with the release of the first edition

I found this on DVD at Katsucon last year. Some small random vendor (But the dude really new what he was talking about) had it. I sadly didn't have the money for it, so my friend lent (gave) me the 15 bucks for it. I remember reading a lot of the reviews for it that were kind of meh on it. I can kind of see why some of the photoshop-ish effects seem a bit over done. But over all this is a pretty cool piece.

YES! This is still one of my favorite anime, and watching it after several years go by, I still don't tire of its inspiring spirit. I still remember trying to show this to my favorite English teacher in high school, and for all her literary study, she still couldn't get over the fact of "Why are they cats??"
 Anyway, I'm happy to see one of my old favorites once again grace Buried Treasure. ^^

My local used DVD, CD, Games store chain had a whole bunch of copies a year or two back for mostly around $2. I picked it up and found the animation to be neat, but the compression, like it was said, miserable. And the whole thing too abstract for me. The dialog was just too much. I ended up selling my DVD back to them.

I've been looking for the title of this anime, since i saw a trailer on a DVD a few years back and it scared the hell out of my sister and me. No doubt it's very good, but that was quite possibly the creepiest thing I've ever seen.

I was wondering when you were going to get to this one! What a fantastic movie. I liked Macross, but this is what made me into a Kawamori fan. It's fun to watch this and then Arjuna and spot the thematic similarities.

Has Funimation actually republished any of Tokyopop's anime catalog? It seems like all the shows that used to be theirs have pretty much vanished from the market across the board: Real Bout High School, Saint Tail, Spring and Chaos, Vampire Princess Miyu...

Actually, looking at the old press release on the Encyclopedia page, 5/29 would have been release of the limited edition version (which was recalled), and the standard version was supposed to come out "once the re-mastered discs are ready." Whether that's exactly how it happened I have no way of saying from this distance (though the review history on Amazon seems to bear it out); it wouldn't surprise me if Amazon just had one page for all the versions and just shipped whatever stock TP sent them back in the day, anyway. ...None of which has any bearing on which version the sellers of used copies on Amazon might be selling, of course, and naturally most of them don't specify. I suppose it comes down to whether one's willing to gamble, although the low-end prices are pretty low right now. (I am amused by the seller asking $100 for the limited edition, which is much more likely to be the lousy version.) |

Friend of mine has this on LD, and it's a great film (I also traded for the VHS fansub back in the day). TP's tagline about "Japan's most psychotic author" ensured that I'd never buy their release.
