Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (TV)

Genres: mystery
Themes: assassins

Plot Summary: At first glance, Fukuoka seems like a peaceful city, but under the surface, crime is running rampant. The city's Hakata ward is home to the professionals of the underworld: professional killers, detectives, informants, professional revenge seekers, those skilled in torture, and more. And according to urban legend, even a "killer of professional killers" exists in the city. When stories of the men in the underworld are told, a "professional killer murder" appears.

I may watch this just for the fact that it takes place in Fukuoka!

I went into this show blind and not knowing anything about it. It did surprise me slightly that the main guy is actually a spoiler[crossdresser]. It makes killing easier considering the disguise. Besides that, I got some slight Durarara vibes from this.

Still not sure what to think about this anime yet. There's a decent amount of characters and I want to know about them more.

Ep 2:

OK, it looks like we have all our plot ducks in a row now; how much do you bet hot crossdresser goes after newbie first, then once they sort out that he's not responsible, everyone teams up to go after slimeball politician and son?

And Banba is way too chill about all these assassins running around his office. Plus having $45K (in USD) just lying around in cash? Something is up with that guy...

P.S., there seems to be two threads for this show?

I guess Stark lost track of what threads they'd made. Smile

I'm surprised this didn't get streaming review votes, as well as how meh the general reaction seems to be. It took me awhile to get around to watching it, but so far, I'm totally loving it. I like all the characters except the ones I'm supposed to despise, which is a good sign. I haven't had any trouble following the plot, unlike most other convoluted series like Durarara and Baccano, I like the "bland" character designs, and even the silly conceit of a killing company called Red Rum. I even like the blazing business cards thing. Very Happy

This is the best new show this season has offered me that isn't SOL or intentionally sleep-inducing iyashikei. It's at least more fun than Darling, and somehow more engaging than Kokkoku, which is as good, but keeping me at arm's length in a way I can't pinpoint.

^I agree that this has been the most fun as far as "non-cute, more mature" shows are concerned this season (not counting Devilman Crybaby). It features a bunch of interesting characters and this world full of killers, killer killers and revenge (and torture) specialists is pretty intriguing. Pity there's no streaming review which might give the show a bit of a push at least...

Yeah, I can't pinpoint that, either. Kokkoku is one of my favourite shows of the season. I'm enjoying this one, though. I'm hoping that Fake Highschool Girl Killer's sister isn't really dead. She was such a cute kid in the photo and flashback scene.

I've merged the duplicate threads and edited Stark700's second post to remove the redundancies.

Ep. 3:

This was not quite as good as the first couple of episodes; the basic plot elements were fine, just some of the execution was... questionable.

The action scenes, especially Xianming taking out the mob boss's henchdudes, were so stupid I actually laughed (blood fountains everywhere!) - who thought a spoiler[knife pistol] was a cool idea? And he recovered from that injury way too fast (and his clothes did too! Rolling Eyes )

And Jiro's getting campier... I liked that they were keeping him restrained. Hopefully they won't take that too far and turn him into an outright okama type.

Now that the story has gotten its "gory onscreen death" quotient filled for a bit, it looks like it will be going back to what it's good at, meaning lots of scheming and double-crossing and wriggling out of sticky situations.

Everyone seems to have instantly realized Newbie-kun didn't do it, although I guess he'll still be laying low with Jiro and co., because reasons. But seriously, spoiler[accidentally hitting someone with a baseball] = career switch to professional assassin?

Xianming is obviously going to survive his current little problem (everyone who predicted back in episode 1 that he would spoiler[try to get at the son by impersonating a potential victim], raise your hand), but I'm dying to know how. The one thing you can say for the Netflix model is that you aren't stuck with cliffhangers...

Also, this episode proves that Xianming still looks hot in a raggedy T-shirt and sweatpants. Smile

Very fun show. "You look like a male host who isn't popular with the ladies." Laughing I'll be very interested to see how Xianming gets out of this one. Plus, I still can't shake my suspicion that Xianming's sister wasn't actually the girl who was killed.

::raises hand:: Clearly in this series, ridiculous and over-the-top is a feature, not a bug. And I'm eating it up with a spoon so far. Smile

I really like how they keep fitting the various puzzles pieces together as we go along, instead of saving all the connections for the grand race to the finish.

Not all that strange if you've ever played Final Fantasy VIII where the main character carries a "gunblade."

And here you can watch the "Man at Arms" group forge a gunblade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GgijhlKbSc

(They have also made a remarkable replica of Ryoko's scissor blade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFGxk2aUBFQ)

Ep. 4:

Well, that was quite an impressive body count for a single episode. Shocked

I've had my suspisions about Banba for a while now, so i wasn't surprised he turned out to be the spoiler[Niwaka Samurai]. It was a bit more surprising to me that they wrapped up that storyline so fast, though. I wonder if there's going to be another comprehensive plot or if it'll become more episodic from now on? Well, i wouldn't mind either way as long as it keeps being entertaining.

^ I thought that the first time we saw him in that flashback, but something put me off the idea, though I don't remember now what it was that dissuaded me.

I was actually kinda sad to see Munakata go. He wasn't a good guy by any means (hardly anyone in this is), but I still liked him somehow. I don't know why I kept feeling like he was a Russian. Must've been the silver hair. Smile

It was a surprise that they wrapped everything up this episode, but as far as I can see they didn't leave any loose ends, which is impressive. Looks like it will be a series of capers handled by our intrepid baseball team.

"Don't name me like a panda!" Laughing I'm not sure Saito looks any different now... But now we know why the title.

Well, this episode was still pretty silly in spots; more blood fountains for everyone! But Xianming and Banba are now teaming up for good, and I'm hopeful for the new antagonist (?).

Me too; it felt like it wrapped up a bit too quickly.

Not sure I'm on board with the baseball angle, and not fond of Newbie-kun's new look. And I agree Eyepatch and Redhead were good cast members, and I'm sorry to see them go...
