If I understand right, is the version of Japari Park in this a more akin to a moe-human zoo than in the TV series, which seemed more like a cutesy version of The Island of Dr Moreau?

^ Yes, that's pretty much how it feels. It's unfortunate, to put it mildly.

That's a shame. Still, at least they're not catching the Friends like Pokemon, or something. Enough gacha games out there like that that I wouldn't put it beyond the people managing this franchise. |

The alleged fault regarding Friends' place as a novelty and not as people shows that Rebecca didn't pay attention to the anime.
That Friends are just animals given human appearance and marginally better learning and dexterity. The animals recognize that they are still animals and have their limitations. Case in point: Friends aren't people. I don't know why they made a school setting, but as Boss states in the labyrinth episode, the park exists for people to play with and learn about Friends and by extension animals. |

While that's definitely the case for the anime, it's made clear that it's not true of the manga, which appears to be its own take on the concept; perhaps it's the fault of the translation, but the manga repeatedly refers to the Friends as "animal girls" and makes it clear that they are at least partially human.
Believe me, I wanted this to be like the anime in both concept and execution! |
