I've never even seen Kenshin (Strange I know), It's just interesting to see Japan try to take the moral high ground, given their record on this particular issue.

So you were just trying to be a devil's advocate about an immoral action like child abuse to argue for the fun of it? That's reprehensible of you.

Wait... WHAT? How the hell is that playing the devil's advocate? I'm not defending child pornography, I said he's being vilified for something the Japanese were ok with up to now. Which he is. Where was the outrage about this problem before? Why are they still selling Lolita model books?

Cool it, guys. Especially CCTakato.

Not only are they OK with it, some girls even got famous from it (Chiaki Kuriyama). In fact they're still making the same sleazy content, they just toned it down (little girls in tiny swimsuits eating popsicles, bananas...). Hell the only reason they made it illegal in the first place was because the UN put pressure on them to do something about the problem. |
Yeah, junior idol stuff still gets made and is still a decent way to get your foot in the industry. Just no more explicit stuff. The real crime is he was dumb enough to keep it at his office. I suppose if he gets the full year will depend if it was explicit stuff or just nude modeling stuff. I do like his upfrontness on what he likes. Gotta respect a dude who's open and honest with his kinks.
Never been a huge fan of Kenshin, but it sucks it'll probably never get a remake now and his career is kaput, unless Oda pulls some strings.

You can't compare child abuse with DVDs that where common good till 2 years ago.
While I wished the author of Kenshin had different hobbies I also don't think he is a monster. The Japanese society is just way to different than ours.

First Kevin Spacey and now this? Who else do I like who will be prosecuted for illegal acts involving minors(I think that's how it is spelt)?
The ironic thing, is that creators who draw the stuff, like Kenichi Sonoda or Nisio Isin etc, have not been found in possession of material.

Anime: When it's okay to defend a guy (or a whole country and its "soceity") when it comes to child porn.
Different society or not, it's still CHILD PORN. He allegedly got it AFTER they made it illegal. So...I don't really see a reason to defend him. Hoping for a severe sentence...

Societal standards change over time; things that people could get away with even just 10 years ago are now costing people their jobs. You can't have failed to hear about the sex offending in America's entertainment industry finally being taken seriously, for example.
v1cious wrote: | Not to be that guy, but I think people are freaking out way too much over this. As the article already stated, child pornography didn't become illegal until 2014, and that teen idol stuff was all over the place. Still is in some places. I don't personally agree with this content, but it's not surprising that people would still have a lot of that stuff lying around. It wasn't illegal afterall. |
Whether it's legal at the time or not (and in this case it's not; the offending took place from 2015 on) is not really the point, and neither is how many people were okay with it at the time. Slavery was legal and accepted for quite some time in the US, but I wouldn't say that people were "freaking out way too much over it" if they were talking about how a particular slave-owner was a bad person for whipping his slaves.

Welp, close-minded, aren't we? In such case that you can easily tie rape, violence, molesting to just keeping DVD's, then I don't see any salvation in this world. I can really understand where people are coming from. Of course, keeping such things are kinda awful and disgusting, but go easy on the judgment. Watsuki may have admitted he liked young girls, but that doesn't automatically make him a rapist, child molester and anything. There are many kinds of pervert who doesn't go further than just obsessing from afar. Sure, they are pitiful people though.
Again, for argument's sake, as I am a big Watsuki fan, I won't be easily judging him like some others here just to stay relevant on the justified side. Still, I won't be brave enough to defend him if in such instance, he actually did vile things akin to the DVD content. I will be thoroughly heartbroken and will stash my Rurouni manga volumes in a box and bury them in my yard, for a long time, if not forever.

There is so much wrong with Japan. But things there really are different than they are here. There are multiple examples of very young actrices that started out in 18+ movies and are still acting today.

When it comes to things like child porn, things should be the same everywhere...

I agree, child porn is horrible. However the whole Japanese young school girl obsession that was legal till 2 years ago is such gray area. You could even argue the whole idol scene where 40 years old guys go to handshakes events weekly is kinda wrong from our perspective.
