That's part of the joke with Medjed. He's incredibly obscure, so much so that hardly anyone in real life heard of him for 4,000 years. In all of the surviving ancient Egyptian literature we have, he is only mentioned in a single sentence. But his appearance (there are two surviving drawings of him) is so strange that he became a big meme in Japan once he was discovered.

Medjed was probably one of Elizabeth's people who got stranded on Earth in ancient times.
He is a cute little sucker though. Really stands out in the artwork of Egyptian gods. I can see why the Japanese latched on to him.

I used to be really into ancient Egyptian stuff as a kid and I still enjoy mythology-themed stuff today.

Let's see here. A Japanese anime based on an Egyptian god few have ever heard of before now. The oddness factor with this thing has been raised considerably with this announcement.
