You could almost argue that Dawson and the other characters are the stars of the film from an emotional perspective, with Golgo acting as a dispassionate and unstoppable force of nature.

That's pretty much the norm for most Golgo 13 stories. There are some stories where he doesn't appear at all until the end, if at all.

The popularity of Golgo 13 mystifies me. I found the movie thoroughly horrible and laughably bad when I first saw it. And a recent re-watch for the sake of my Youtube channel has done nothing to change that opinion.

As much as I like Golgo 13 let's not pretend he isn't protected by the armor of plot from time to time.

That response kind of indicts itself, I'd say.

This movie is... meh. The movie's major weakness is the fact that it is a movie. But I would certainly recommend the TV series because it gets straight to the point. Tells 50 different stories with each one taking up a full episode, therefore nothing gets stretched out. It's more about HOW Golgo 13 will achieve his goal as opposed to just being a macho badass, which he is in the show but his intelligence and professionalism has a much stronger impact on each of the episodes than the movie. And I never felt they repeated anything. The only predictable element is he's going to hit his targets in the end, but you never know how and it doesn't take the piss.

I wouldn't recommend the movie as an introduction. Just a bonus for established fans, and even then it's not so great. And I love 80's style action movies.

The TV series is a better adaptation; it's also episodic so you can enjoy it slowly or marathon it. Personally I think Golgo 13 is a lot more interesting than James Bond (who he apparently was slightly based on)

The TV series is too bland looking for me; I'd much rather just read the manga. The movie has a story that manages to be decent enough to make it more than just a movie to watch ONLY for the presentation, even thought-provoking as far as the villain's psychology and his son, and the presentation can be absolutely mind-blowingly stylish and inventive.
