The other nights CBS was promoting next week episode of moonlight (10/12/2007) and they used Jakumetsu track from Basilisk for background music. I will try to catch the episode to see if they use more of this title.

I've heard some music from Berserk playing in the background on my local rock station before.

It's not uncommon for songs on certain soundtracks that are seen to have a certain degree of appeal to be sold by their creators to be used as stock music, more or less. You'll notice movie trailers in particular use this as trailers often have a music track from a completely different movies soundtrack even though that song isn't in the movie that's being advertised. It's just when the trailer hits the net and screens the soundtrack isn't completed yet so they buy a piece of stock music to fill in. Music from Stargate, Dragonheart and Requiem for a Dream are particularly common.

While it's most common in movie trailers that isn't the only place you'll find it. Networks, commercials and radio stations will also purchase clips and chances are that's where the Basilisk music came in to play. It's possible they just heard the tune and thought it'd be a nice backer for the preview and that the music itself won't be present in the episode.

NPR uses music from Akira. I remember that almost all of the Asian skaters in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics used Hisaishi's music from Miyazaki's films. I'm not sure if this is still the trend since I've not watched the Olympics for years. Japanese variety shows tend to use tons of anime music as well.

The Daily Mixx from WB a while back used background music from the English dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! As its theme song. That's all I really know about, though.

When I was in Japan last July, one of the weather girls was giving the weekly forecast while music from "Azumanga Daioh!" played in the background.

Konata jokes about this in "Lucky Star," BTW.

Wow, this is pretty interesting. I knew that Japanese shows do this ALL the time, but I did not know that the same practice was in use over here too.

For example, Iron Chef (the original Japanese version) uses a song from "Big O" as one of the themes for the Iron Chef Italian (only in some episodes, he has two theme songs and they switched at some point). And of course the main theme of Iron Chef is from Backdraft (the American movie).

But that's only the start of it. It seems to me that a huge chunk of these Japanese TV programs use anime music, from all sorts of random animes. A few days ago on an episode of the Japanese TV show "Happily Family Plan" they used a song from Metal Fighter Miku. And right after that they used more songs from another anime, but I forgot which one. Many years back, the music from Magic User's Club was in widespread rampant use in Japanese TV shows too, I think.
