It still looks to me like Pony Canyon US is getting a awful lot of odd titles. Sports Anime have traditionally not done well in the US and The Lost Village might be used as a dictionary example of the word "odd". I suppose with their collector's singles style releases they may get by but I can't help but wonder how they will fair if some of these releases tank.

Yeah, Ponycan's really showing they have a terrible eye to choose hits, is there anyone out there who actually wants to own Lost Village? Let alone pay over 200 bucks for it?

People who want to live the MST3K experience or are fans of Tsutomu Mizushima's unintentional horror-comedies. The latter probably also bought BLOOD-C and Another out of their own volition for that very reason.

Thanks again PonyCan for:

A. Getting stuff that I have zero interest in and therefore saving me money and...
B. Getting stuff that I have a minor interest in and I might be willing to pick it up, but pricing it so high that there's no way I'd buy it and therefore saving me money .

Now I can use that money to buy a ridiculously priced AoA release and hate myself for it. Wait, should I really be thanking you for this?

On a serious side, they shouldn't have a problem selling some of these as there is always a group of collector's that desire something that others don't have or had a very limited print run. Lost Village is quirky enough that it should get some people to buy it and Kuromukuro is a kinda-ok mecha show. I think these two fall into the Rokka situation, probably interesting enough for a standard overpriced BD release to attract people, but likely it will only get a Limited Edition that will frustrate some. I haven't seen anything about Days but they maybe aiming for the same crowd that liked Free! or Haikyuu! Some of these are sensible choices, but again they will probably be priced so high that even a regular collector (not casual and not hardcore) like me will balk at it. Kinda sad that these are some of our choices. Sad

Now how the hell are PonyCan still in business, anyway? When they decided not to dub Sound! Euphonium, that seemed like the bad decision that should automatically disqualify a company from doing business, and yet here they are.

Basically, they the bustas.

What a shame. I actually like Kuromukuro but now the price will be too unrealistic to own it. Hopefully Netflix will keep it up for a good while.

From what I understand, Netflix "original" shows don't have an expiration date on their license, so technically it should stay on the site "forever" (for as long as Netflix exists at least)

Seriously? I was convinced that Pony Canyon and their dumb release strategy were ready to exit the N.A. market.

Yes, you should still thank PCUSA because AoA will usually charge $120-150 for 12 episodes, as opposed to the $200+ PCUSA will charge.

I am mildly interested in Kuromukuro, but I am pretty much done with buying sub-only releases unless the show blows me away (which the first half has not). I wonder if this is why it has no English dub for Netflix - that neither party was willing to pony up (pun intended) for a dub. I was a bit surprised since Netflix has been doing them for their exclusives until now.

You seem to be under the impression Ponycan USA is a licensor. That would technically not be accurate. Pony Canyon produced these shows in Japan and hold the international rights to them, licensing them out to others for streaming (like Crunchyroll, Netflix, Funimation, etc). Meaning they're merely holding onto home video rights for themselves rather than giving them to a licensor. They're not going to license anything they don't produce and already hold the rights for, I'd imagine. Then there's cases like Dagashi Kashi where they produced it, but did not hold the international rights themselves, so no home video release. Ponycan USA is not a separate entity from Pony Canyon, unlike how AoA is actually separate from Aniplex.

OK, that sheds a better light on Pony Canyon US's behavior. In other words, they get what comes down the international distribution pipe from Pony Canyon Japan regardless of it's marketability.

I would suppose that it is still a bad idea to do high priced collector releases of series that probably would barely cover costs of a standard release.

I know that. What I meant is that as a producer Ponycan (I use the shorthand out of laziness, not to specifically target the US branch) has shown to have a pretty bad eye when it comes to choosing projects to invest in, particularly for the ones they've chosen for international distribution. Their biggest hit was Eupho, and that one's a "decent success" at most. Their picks for winter are shows no one liked or cared about. Neither of them have come out in Japan for home release, but no one expects them to sell well. And in the US, pretty much everyone except Nick Creamer and a handful other people thought Mayoiga was one of the worst shows of the season, while there's been little interest in Kuromukuro, doesn't seem like a lot of people cared to pick it up now that it came out on Netflix. And their lack of business smart shows when they're trying to price these highly undesirable shows as if they were the Madokas and Attack on Titans of the year

Pretty much how I feel when I see this. I will spend money on a PC release if I love it enough, but it has to be seriously LOVED. Sound Euphonium being one of those. I haven't seen Kuromukuro yet, because I was waiting for Netflix to have it all, but that seems to be the only one of these that is mostly in my wheel-house. I enjoyed Lost Village, but certainly wasn't planning to buy it and definitely not at their price point.

I think the point is that Pony Canyon is doing a really horrible job at choosing which ones to hold onto.

I'm curious if Sound Euphonium has been a big enough success to offset the failures of pretty much every other release they've had. This sort of new influx of titles they are keeping for themselves suggest it may have been.
