i'd owned the gantz anime for a while and was both perplexed and pissed at the ending does the old lady wishing him luck mean that the gantz let him out or just good luck on the next hunt
so ofcourse i went looking for the manga which i knew went beyond the tv series to find out but turns out the entire fourth hunt where he is made to be the target for the new arivals is not in the manga instead he's sent out on his own to hunt the shorty alien i was disapointed at first but as i read on that was all put to rest by the fact that i got to continue following kurono's fight to survive. it was like meeting and friend you hadn't seen in a while. now i'm completly hooked all over again. the manga is so much more hardcore than the anime i don't know why i waited so long to read it.
but basicly i'm trying to see if anyone feels the same way i do or am i just late to the party

I haven't seen the Gantz anime yet because from what I've heard about it, it isn't really that good so I'll put it off for a while. However I've read the entire manga up to the point where it's at in Phase 2 and it's superb.
I also think that the manga was extremely hardcore and over the top with it's violence and gore and it took a while for the story to make sense and there's still a lot to left to be explained about Gantz. Nonetheless it's probably the most exciting manga I've read and I truly love how well Kurono is developed throughout the story because it doesn't involve any cliches whatsoever.
The only problem I have now is how insane the story is getting now in Phase 2 but what makes up for it is how well that lil toddler fights now.

yeah i had heard the critics say the manga was far better but i enjoyed the anime to much to care. but now i see what they were talking about the character interaction rings more realalistic in the manga. and the constant high grade images defenetly beat the anime.i don't know where phase two begins because i'm reading scans off this one page. i forgot the name, i've only read up to where izumi makes it back into gantz room after his massacre at shybuya when he dressed in black face and the hunt that came after. so i don't know who those guys were that attacked them when the hunt was over. i'm exited to see where the story goes next but why not check the anime seeing heads explode is still too fun to watch

I saw the anime series and think it is a decent series despite numerous problems that I've mentioned in other threads, such as their pacing issues. And I will admit that I actually think the concept of the final battle in the anime to be an interesting one, despite the fact that a lot of rules established in Gantz were ignored and broken, but I really don't like the ending scene at all.
I've read a few scanlations of Gantz though not the whole thing. The first few volumes seemed to be more or less how the anime was so I picked up after the anime left off and I actually liked the shorty alien arc but haven't gotten around to reading any further than that and it's been about half a year since I read that stuff. Is the first 90 issues of the manga worth reading even if you have already seen the anime? I know in Berserk the Golden age arc is pretty much the same as in the anime but they at least give a few little things in the manga to make it worth reading and enjoying even if you've already seen the anime because these little things add depth and explain things a little better than they were in the anime. Does anyone know if that's the same as it is in Gantz?

My memory of both the anime and the manga are fuzzy, but I think they are the same up through the end of the Buddha arc, with minor differences (no bum killers in the manga). But it diverges immediately after it ends as soon as the survivors return to the Gantz room. I don't remember what chapter that would be in the manga though.

If you've watched the entire anime then I think it's best to start reading just before the Buddha arc (Volume 05, Chapter 53) because that is probably the best mission in the manga, closely followed by the Dinosaur arc .
As for Phase 2, that starts at Chapter 238 and it is currently at 257 which isn't that much.

i agree with you on the concept. after the buddha arc i couldn't think of how it could be topped but i think having the rules turned against him was unexpected and frankly brillient. i agree though that the final scene was completely bull. i don't mind a cliffhanger ending (berserk's ending comes to mind) but is there a solid answer to if he gets freed, has to keep fighting or even survives but to reiterate a earlier post i'm glad i'm reading the manga so it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

They did but they're not going to put anything out for it for at least another year.
