Not quiet a common type to be found, is it? Most anime songs are either happy, sorrowful, determined, passionate, or exciting. Few can be described as morbid.
Let's talk about a song I recently heard, called Higurashi no Naku Goro ni (from the anime Higurashi no Naku Goro ni, yeah...the same name). Here is a link to youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hHKmiRwyBU What do you feel after watching? I did shiver when I watch the first episode, and keep doing it until the very last one (because you get to know the story...). Oh, did you have the time to read the translation of the lyric? The tone of lyric of anime songs are usually love, passion, happiness, dream, appreciation, regrets, sorrow..., but even if a song has a negative lyric, it would eventually ends in a positive way, like a realization of the wrongdoing. Yet this song gives a hopeless and morbid feeling to me from the beginning to the end. I do like these kind of songs, because it's pretty unusual and special to me. After listening to five songs that sing "Kimi no soba ni itai" or the like, wouldn't it be interesting hear a voice saying "I'm gonna take away your finger"? [EDIT: Changed the word "horrid" to "morbid," since horrid means something completely different from intended purpose I'm reading about this thread. Look up the definitions if you don't believe me. -TK] |

This song chills me every time I listen to it. But I guess one has to have seen to the anime to truly appreciate how creepy it can be. The OP of the second season is probably even more disturbing, especially the odd chorus.
In a very different way the OP of Trinity Blood is something of a downer. Not exactly chilling or disturbing but profoundly depressing. |

While it has a sort of upbeat tone, the lyrics of xxxholic's op song are rather depressing.
Also, its eerie and haunting, esp when you see the show itself, but elfen lied has a good song for something similar to the feeling I think you are reaching for. |

Bokurano's "Unistall" also seems to fit the description of this thread:

One that really sticks out for me is Go DA DA from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It's unnerving enough on its own (with the deep booming in the background and then the creepy kazoo), but the fact that they always played it when Gohda showed up made it even worse. -shiver-
I can think of a few more. Time to Die from Arjuna; the weird vocal part at the beginning still raises the hairs on the back of my neck, no matter how many times I hear it. Misty Strange Dimension from Serial Experiments Lain, like most of the rest of the soundtrack, sounds fairly normal, even cheerful at first, but as the song progresses it just gets disturbing. Then there's Santi-U from Macross Plus, probably one of the spookiest songs I've ever heard. And of course, let's not leave out From 666 to 777 from Hellsing. -BIG SHIVER- |

The theme song to Lunar Legend Tsukihime is my top choice for creepy theme songs.
I love the theme to When They Cry (Higurashi no naku Koroni) as well as the one to the sequel "Naraku no Hana" by the same artist Eiko Shimamiya. I like her voice in addition to the unsettling nature of the songs. Then there's Paranoia Agent which is happy and disturbingly creepy at the same time..... |

Speaking about Higurashi and Kai, it is extremely creepy how the OP for the second season sounds remarkably akin to the OP of the first season played backwards. Higurashi fans probably have seen this already (as I took it from the Kai discussion thread) but it's worth posting here as well:
Naraku No Hana reversed version And I second Paranoia Agent's OP as being extremely creepy. It is oddly upbeat, the lyrics are pretty strange (and remind me of the old man in the moon's ramblings) and the imagery is bizarre to say the least. Given the content of the series it is odd seeing the highly disturbed cast happilly laughing in such a carefree fashion. The ED is amazingly soothing but highly disturbing...I fear Maromi. |

I love Higurashi's theme! I didn't like it at first, because it was so different from everything I've heard so far, but after hearing it episode after episode, I started to like it. It's a really cool song. I showed it to my brother and it made him want to watch the anime.

The Higurashi op theme for the first series was scary for a while. But not scary to me anymore. I like the second op more. More memorable and fun to listen to.

Niea Under 7's OP is pretty awful IMO. The vocals sound like he has laryngitis. It's so strained.
Click (If You Dare) I'm also not fond of Death Note's 2nd OP, What's Up People. Click |

For me, it seems that m.o.v.e. has slowly slipped in doing the intros for Initial D. It's like they went from being very energetic and fun to being all emo and moody.
1st Stage OP - Around the World http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v2hVL_Yn9Q vs. 4th Stage OP - Dogfight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkDvNsvkV3g Also, what the hell happened to the Gundam SEED Destiny OPs? I mean, whats up that Enka sounding one towards the end? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr4OP--u_ZM |

Niea Under 7's OP is awesome! Thanks for sharing that one! Perhaps my taste is... questionable though. I personally like 'What's up People'. It's good if you're going for something shocking. |

Welcome to NHK, the 1st ending was very erratic and kind of had a sense of what paranoia is like so it did freak me out, but it also seriously annoyed me.

O.O Yes...it is indeed questionable. I don't really find "What's up People?" shocking...just bad. I'm not a fan of metal or whatever the heck What's Up People's genre is, so maybe that's why I hate it. |

Worry not, I love metal and profoundly resent that song. Especially since the first OP was so great and fit the serie's style to a T. |
