Do you know manga "rurouni kenshin"? And do you like it?
Surprised
I am a Japanese college student, now, am inquiring about the charm of the manga seen from the foreigner by the graduation thesis of the university, and use “rurouni kenshin ”as the subject matter.

What is the charm of “rurounikenshin”?
Characters? Story?Comedy?Description?

Please tell me the charm of rurouni kenshin which you consider.

I have (almost) all the volumes, and it's still my favorite manga. I really appreciate Nobuhiro Watsuki's attention to detail in some scenes; I often catch myself staring at one page for a few minutes. Rurouni Kenshin is also pretty deep, with historical details about Japan's history frequently incorporated into exciting action scenes.

Plus Hajime Saito is one of the most badass characters around.

How is your graduation thesis coming along? I recently graduated from a university in Philadelphia and wrote my thesis on manga. Here are a few books you might want to check out:

Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics by Frederik Schodt
Dreamland Japan: Writings on Modern Manga by Frederik Schodt
Manga: Sixty Years of Japanese Comics by Paul Gravett

Some of them are a bit old, but you still might find them helpful. Good luck.

Rurouni Kenshin is my favorite manga. I love history, I love intense sword-fights, and I REALLY love Sanosuke. Very Happy

For any manga I like, I like it for the story and the characters. And Rurouni Kenshin has an excellent story with interesting characters that pulled me in and made me buy every volume.

hello to all, rurouni kenshin is my fav manga for many reasons charecters are great , stories are very deep, and i personaly like how kenshin is trying to make amends with his past by helping peoplenow by not killing, and yes i do know the sakabattou is not historicaly correct weapon but the sybolism of it is what means something to me.
sorry to ramble on Laughing

For one thing, Watsuki has a great sense of humor in Kenshin. Another cool thing is that he references American comics a whole lot. I mean, one of the characters from the Jinchu arc almost looked like a rip-off of Venom, in a good way (Watsuki said he was based off of Carnage--yeah, right). That sort of thing really clicks in the U.S. a lot more than it probably would in Japan...

Oh, and he's a terrific artist, as well...the scene in the Jinchu spoiler[where it looked like Kaoru died] was so beautiful and sad...I almost cried when I saw it.

Man I must be a weakling. I was 25 when I read that part of the manga you are referring to and I did cry. spoiler[Kenshin was so totally owned by the event of Kaoru's death and I really empathized with him. It just sucked the life right out of him. ]

I started on the anime personally but went through the manga afterward. Rurouni Kenshin is just a great series because it has a very involving premise. Here's a guy who is on the one hand extremely protective of his friends to the point of being willing to give up his own life, and on the other refuses to kill others. I really view Kenshin as one of the best optimistic medium for pacifism out there. I'm not a pacifist, but if I were to be one Kenshin would totally be my role model. For that matter, even without being a pacifist I think he's a great character that people should really seek to emulate generally.

I also really appreciate Hajime Saito and his contrast to Kenshin.
