somehow that sounds very small-39 employees. Maybe because I have so many Geneon/Pioneer titles in my collection I just imagined they'd be larger. Isn't less than 50 employees considered a small business? (all that insurance/politics stuff I scan, but don't really pay attention to about if the business has fewer than 50 employees, they don't have to provide insurance? Or they do maybe-like I said politics-initiatives-propositions at election time/glaze over stuff)
And with the other news coming out about dentsu & all, it sounds like an overall master plan-re-organizing not unlike the Safeway thing my husband went thru back in the '80's. It's rough onthe employees, but businesses often don't think of those things nowadays. It's their bottom line that matters

Wow, so they had just over a week notice? Ouch. Though I'm sure they had a feeling after ADV Films took over.

Anyone still want to dispute that this is a merger, when all is said and done?

This seems like a formality at this point, considering the recent news about Dentsu and John Ledford's relationship with them.

Though I didn't expect things to move so quickly. Yikes.

It's only a short matter of time before there isn't a Geneon anymore, from the look of it.

I'm surprised it took _that long_!!!

But, yeah, it's a merger.

78% of Dentsu is owned by ADV's owner + Dentsu now full owner of Geneon + the layoffs + the Geneon/ADV "partnership = no more Geneon.

ADV now has Geneon lock, stock, and barrel.

Good so maybe ADV will re-dub Saiyuki Reload & Gunlock with the VA's from the first series (fat chance I know but a girl can wish) Very Happy

John Ledford does not own 78.4% of Dentsu. He owns 78.4% of ADV. No where in that news snippet did it say he owned that much of Dentsu. It was referring to a previous press release.

Personally I would like to see a ton of the old Pioneer pressed titles re-released in uncut form - that is the one thing I hated about Pioneer - all the editing they did before releasing them - bit big time.

CCS: You never know. There might always be another anime company which emerges down the road. If not, maybe they can find work at a live-action video distributor.

koku: Yeah, there was a Dog of Flanders parody in Nerima Daikon Bros., so I'm hoping ADV will release the uncut version. They were real stubborn f**ks about that. They claimed the edited version didn't sell well enough to justify a better release, but they put out almost all of Ippo, even though only people who read the manga were buying it.

You misread the other press release -- Ledford owns 78% of ADV, not of Dentsu. He'd be pretty well off if he owned that much of such a major Japanese company.

They were spiteful/stubborn [expletive deleted]s on a lot of things, which is part of why they haven't been doing too hot for the last couple of years (plenty of botched franchises due to various elements).

That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure (the article was worded weirdly).

Thanks for clearing that up!

ADV owns Geneon "lock, stock, and barrel"? Well, they don't. Maybe down the line, who knows?

It wouldn't surprise me, if a few years from now, ADV absorbs Geneon completely. Of course, that'll mean Dentsu will have washed their hands completely of the overseas anime production. And a part of my anime fandom would die inside because that may not bode well for other companies.

I seriously doubt that would happen. Essentially, Geneon Entertainment [USA], Inc. = Kadokawa Pictures USA now. Geneon is just a subsidiary that is more overseas production arm than the full out overseas marketing entity it was before. ADV is handling the sort work that Bandai, FUNimation, and Nozomi Ent. (aka Right Stuf) has done with Kadokawa, albeit with additional responsibilities. Allowing another company to absorb your overseas unit and having to deal with them in an even more intimate relationship would be a foolish mistake on Dentsu's part. What they have done is strike a partnership with a well-established U.S. distributor who knows how to handle the market there. Less work on their part means lesser costs for them and a better chance at being successful in the region and getting your product out there. It would be odd to have Geneon Entertainment, which is a major producer in Japan, and not have a U.S. unit anymore, not unless you were the one who was buying out a company in ADV's position.

I'm not really sure how laying off useless staff members equals a company going under, but I also didn't read the article. So I guess my question is, what is ADV doing besides distributing/marketing Geneon titles? Because that in itself doesn't mean much. It's actually pretty common to have one company distribute titles for other companies.

<thinks back to about 2 years ago when everyone was saying ADV wouldn't be around much longer, either...>
