Oh wow, this is really cool! As someone with a fairly avid interest in classic entertainment (be it anime, US toons, writing, etc.), this is an insanely awesome find. I'm glad it was found so it can be further preserved now.
A pity the original audio isn't also there though, I wonder if it's even still listed anywhere who was originally in it, or if that info is already lost to time? |

While I don't know on how long it will to reach the public domain in Japan, I wouldn't be surprised if it was brought over here and still copyrighted. That's because the US keeps extending the copyright length (the Disney Empire is noted for lobbying for copyright extensions towards their mouse).
Heck, there are times that while a foreign work is still copyrighted in their native country, they might become public domain here through things other than expiration. For example, they didn't register their copyright in the USA the right way. Our questionably functioning federal government has then restored the works to copyright here (called "copyright restoration" or "retroactive copyright"). |

He rewrote the script from memory. It's likely to be a little different than the original but it would still have the same basic story.

I wonder if Japan's on the verge of its equivalent to the Doctor Who magnetic tape reel collection or the mile-high comic book stack, as they DID track down someone who collects extremely rare footage of Osamu Tezuka's works. I hope they discover more!
Hey, it still takes curiosity to look something up online, and if no one knows the answer, it's the old-fashioned go-out-and-see-for-yourself technique that always pulls through.
Do you mean like what happened to It's a Wonderful Life?
Unfortunately, from what this article describes, not much was left. But it's still something (and proves the production existed), and it sounds like it's enough to be pieced together like dinosaur fossils. Still, if all that's left are still images, then that isn't much at all. |

There should be more restoration projects like this. With the digitization of older media formats, they can be preserved longer and in a better condition than in their original, physical formats.

leafy sea dragon, you are correct. I am of the mind that when something becomes public domain, it should stay that way. Also, I think that when a foreign or domestic work becomes public domain, it will simultaneously do that in every other country that is still copyrighted under.

Great new's the biggest one that's still missing from Tezuka are most episodes from a sci-fi puppet series that is way older then this one.
Hopeing this get's at least released on DVD in Japan !!! yeha if more people like me where around in the west Tezuka would be a really big deal here ... |

Actually, I think it is saying they have soundless video. -Not just a random collection of still images. |
