Code-E, Read or Die, and ProjectBlue Chikyuu SOS have instrumental openings, all of which are jazzy/bluesy, upbeat, and have a lot of energetic brass section falls among other things.
Other titles with instrumental openings that I know of are Haibane Renmei, with an acclaimed orchestral mini-suite, Monster, with a kinda creepy interesting guiltar/choir mix thing, and Trigun, a kind of synthetic electric guitar thing. Paranoia Agent's ending was instrumental, but I don't know if you'd want it on a compilation CD...

I really like the Tsukihime OP "The Sacred Moon" and the Black Lagoon ED "Don't Look Behind." Another I like isn't really an OP or ED, it's an insert from the FMA movie: "Requiem." It's really worth it.

I very much enjoy the Twelve Kingdoms OP. It really fits well with the series, and it also stands well on its own.

I can't believe I forgot the techno OP for Texhnolyze! I mean, I'm watching through it right now!

Haibane Renmei has an instrumental OP that's very enjoyable. It's sort of a swelling, chamber orchestral piece.

Just to clarify, MariMite's first season had instrumental OP/EDs, but in the second season words and lyrics were added.

How about Shutter Speed, the U.S. opening for Speed Grapher.

I also have to mention the OP of the Crest / Banner of the Stars series. Very nice "epic space" theme.

I love that song. It gives the series that Galactic Heroes styled epicness. If I remember correctly one of the seasons (I think the first) ends with the OP song with Jinto's narration which was one of those perfect anime moments, but I might be imagining it since it has been a number of years since this DVDs release. I was planning on going through the entire series when Banner III is released, but am getting a bit impatient waiting. The English version of the Speed Grapher OP is way cooler than the instrumental song on the Prince of Tennis DVDs. If I understand correctly this is not the original OP song which sadly enough doubles as a ED song. It's hard to talk about the Trigun OP without mentioning the equally cool Gungrave song. I love the signature screech at the ED of the song. Being a rock and metal guy my favorite instrumental OP is hands down the Geneshaft OP. I couldn't get that riff out of my head the first time I watched Geneshafr, although I'm sure it isn't for everyone. Probably my second favorite would be the amazing Master Keaton intro. I love the use of exotic instruments for this theme. There are Eastern and Western elements to the music which I think works very well for the series. I really didn't like the new Area 88 theme song, although I'm glad that they got Keiko Terada to sing on the ED. |

Just started watching Piano and I realized that the opening song is all-instrumental. And I think Gungrave's opening was also instrumental.

There's also Now and Then, Here and There's melancholy opening number, "Now and Then, Here and There." And Victorian Romance Emma's cheerful "Silhouette of a Breeze" opening.
[edit: There's also "Quiet Life" by Taku Iwasaki from Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku Hen, which dormcat mentioned in passing in one of his links.] What's the CD for, if you don't mind my asking? |

Happened to be an owner of all four above. All highly recommended.
Which was composed by Kunihiko Ryo, composer of Silhouette of a Breeze and many other scores. Too bad that its unbelievably high price (~US$40 for a single CD!) prevents me from buying it. |
