Oh, I agree. I'm a HUGE eva fan, but how FMTTM fits with the series is beyond me.
Yes, it is a good song, but it doesn't fit all that well. The ED fits much better (although the OP is the better song). Other than that, for some reason I can't think of any other songs that don't well. Maybe more will come to me later. |

While I do think it was not the best option I agree that it wasn't at all accidental, which makes it all the more disturbing. If one pays attention to the intro it becomes clear that some of the darkest events are rendered in chibi form, namely spoiler[Hiroko being carried away by a gang of girls. This is presented as cute behaviour from the part of friendly characters in the opening when, in the series, it was what drove Hiroko to snap. The event itself is incredibly violent and made me squirm. After that point the opening gains a whole different meaning, making it extremely creepy. To a lesser extent, the opening also shows us Akira and her cute mascot tripping. Again, this is shown as goofy childish-ness on the part of what we assume to be an adorably klutz and her magical pet. In the series Akira's connection with En Soph is full of pain and horror.] It's as if the opening is a very satirical look on the events that take place in the series. |

Wow! I seen that series twice over and never put that connection together. Good job! |

The satirical look was especially apparent for people who already knew the manga beforehand. I and other readers of Mohiro's manga were astonished by this opening. It was somehow really disturbing how Hiroko's case was represented. |

I've always thought that it was related to the godess imagery concerning Rei. (Note how many scenes with Rei prominently feature the moon as an image.) Honey and Clover's first OP, I agree, does not fit the show well (now it's stuck in my head again! GET OUT!!!!) *Ahem* Nothing else comes to mind at the moment... |

I kinda mentioned this earlier, but IIRC, Anno's original version of the story had the Angels coming from the moon. |

Unless I'm missing something, the opening animation(s) to So Long, Mr. Despair have pretty much nothing to do with the anime itself. I don't know about the song either-- would a "Damn Twisted Person" be in despair or hang themselves? Someone help me on this one ^^;
Epiphany: I just now understand why the girls are tied with rope in the opening... It's just the rope I've got down, though... =_= |

The last part sure is surprising but I like the music and I find the whole thing funny when I watch it again. The other clips (the one with the ferris wheel I think) were better still. Oh, and this is the first line of Dramatic, in English: Although past promise has become the star, the memory will never be lost. Would you mind telling me what the promise is? I don't really remember. |

WHISPER OF THE HEART - "Country Roads" Maybe there was some deep, symbolic reason this song was used, other than that it was the school's graduation song in the show, but I was just too stunned upon hearing a John Denver song used as an anime theme to think of one. The first time I saw it I thought that they just "Americanized" the OP.
REQUIEM FROM THE DARKNESS - I just don't think the smooth/lite-jazz sound of the OP/ED fits the mood of the show; to me they sound more like something more suited to John Tesh's radio show. The OP/ED animation is fabulous though. |

I started watching Outlaw Star the other day and the ED (the first one, Hiru no Tsuki) is so out of context with the series that when I first watched it I actually thought it was the next show OP. It's very, very, very soft with still images of a dreamy nature coloured in monorchromatic tones. It has nothing to do with action driven soap opera mood of the series. I have only watched 4 episodes thus far so I could be wrong but it did feel rather odd.

Rather than listing just examples, I think you originally answered your own inquiry - record companies have to make money, too. If you have a massively popular series like Naruto or Bleach, then approaching the producers to get one of your songs you're promoting onto this series makes for excellent promotions. Not to mention, anime fans in foreign lands may end up becoming fans of musical acts and buying albums. I know I have for bands like L'Arc~en~Ciel and Siam Shade, thanks to Rurouni Kenshin. But, this is a trend that started in the mid-1990s, so still kind of a new practice. Producers can cut increasing budgets by coordinating the use of a song for some extra cash, rather than add on extra budget lines for special songs. On one hand, I can understand that they don't fit the series they're "representing" (actually, one of my biggest contentions with American film soundtracks) but on the other hand, if the song is catchy and I like it, I'm not going to worry about it. I don't think that 'ani-son' (song used primarily by an anime which may find popularity elsewhere) is dead by any stretch but it's certainly much harder to find, especially outside of niche, creepy Japanese pedo-moe series. Some notable cross-overs (I guess that'd be the term for it): Uchuu Senkan Yamato's theme is strictly ani-son but is widely popular with its generation in Japan. From what I gather, salarymen in Japan will still sing this song in karaoke boxes. Not to mention that the Maritime Self Defense Forces use the medely as their de facto theme/fight song. On the other hand, 'Odoru Ponpokorin' was a catchy pop blurb from the early 90s but has gained mainstream staying power through being on Chibi Maruko-chan. |

Sore Ga Ai Deshou is such a pretty song, but it doesn't really fit the crazy antics of Fumoffu?! at all. I admit, there is some romantic tension in the series, but not so much as to emphasize it. Oh well, I adore the song so it's no big deal.

Bare with me, as it's been over a year since I watched this series, but I remember being pretty taken aback with the opening for Spiral.
It begins with a voice so nasal that it brings cheese graters to my eardrums, and progresses to a repetitive, extremely happy and fluffy pop song that, to me, doesn't fit the visuals at all. I /LOVE/ the visuals for that opening, but the song just ruins it for me. The anime was so intelligent and, at some points, almost dark, and this opening was hardly a suitable introduction in my opinion. |

I thought that it was an odd choice as well. It actually makes some sense in that the song is rather important to Shizuku and seems to have an emotional value especially in the bond that she forms with Seiji but the Japanese translation felt rather odd. It might because I am so used to seeing the song as more or less typically American, either way the lyrics and the way they were vocalized struck me as odd. |

Yes, tell me about it. The music just doesn't fit. Why a ballad ffs? A song like Death Note's 2nd opening would suit Berserk's ambience much better. To make things worse, those who understand English can understand the guy singing "put your glasses on..." and think to themselves wtf? Another one is Hikaru no Go's fifth ending, Music is My Thing. It's like friendship instead of fatality. Last edited by rti9 on Fri Jan 11, 2008 12:15 am; edited 2 times in total |
