would you do the same thing as Light is doing and kill the ciminals or would you do something different??
i would do the same thing as Light is doing [EDIT: God, what a terrible opener... I changed your title to at least make more grammatical sense and use the actual term "Death Note" instead of "death book" since "Death Note" is what the official term is. -TK] |

Well, despite the rather...abrupt opener, I am glad you started this thread.
Maybe you could add more details about your usage? I actually thought about this a lot, one of those fun hypothetical questions, when I first started the anime Death Note. I think I would have disbelieved the disclaimer about what it could do, and yet...I would have been very very cautious with it as well. I am actually not sure I could ever bring myself to test the theory out however. I mean...life is life, when it's over, how do you reconcile that within yourself if you took someone else's away and you have yours? I realize this haunts people in accidents, and yet to do it with purpose would add a degree of horror it's almost hard to imagine. There was a time in my life however I did think about taking another life on a fairly regular basis (when I was being abused), so I can see how under the right circumstances I may... and if someone were to do something terrible to my children, I think it would be harder not to justify taking action when it would be almost too easy to and not get caught. That takes the whole fear of that away, and yet... if that fair justice? This is a circular arguement in my head. I am not opposed to the death penalty if people are found guilt by a jury of peers, but I don't want to be the one responsible either. Coward? perhaps. For me, teh bottom line is, I think if I ever DID decide to end anothers life, I think the guilt would eat at me until I turned myself in...or took my own life. I couldn't do it...under most circumstances. |

No, we're not going to go down this route.
I have no stomach for reading puerile wish-fulfillment fantasies of who a given user would summarily execute, if he or she were given the power to do so at a whim. No good can come of this thread. Locked. - abunai It's amazing how few people realize that Light is the villain of the piece. ---== EDIT: ==--- At the request of bonbonsrus, who is committed to raising this thread above the level of puerility, I have let myself be persuaded to unlock this thread. However, let me warn everybody that the very first post that starts to list real people by name as targets for a death note will cause this thread to be locked, and I will recommend to the senior admins that its poster receive a tempban. I want it to be absolutely clear that no mods will tolerate any missteps along the lines indicated. - abunai |

Thank you Abunai,
I very much appreciate your allowing this, and I hope as well that we can have some interesting discussion about this that doesn't denigrate into depraved ramblings. |

If a shinigami handed me a death note, I would hand it right back. A, I'm not nearly as smart as Light, B, it seems like more stress than it's worth, and C, I don't have a God complex. Sure, there are loads of people I don't like, and even more people who I'm sure deserve death. But I don't have the right to decide that for them. Also, my conscience would turn me inside out if I ever used a death note >.<

I would have to agree. If knowing what the powers of the Death Note were, I would not want to get myself into something that I would have a very heavy conscience for. It just wouldn't be me. Plus knowing of what could become of the user, and a heavy price to pay for once you're done with the Death Note, I'd rather my life not be so complicated.

I think I've stated this before in a similar thread, but I'd rip it up, burn it, dump its ashes halfway across the globe, whatever it takes to make absolute sure I'd never be able to use one. The power to instantly kill without consequence is occassionally nice in fantasies and all, but if it actually happened in real life, I would do everything I could to make sure I was instantly stripped of that power.

This is a tough question. Really, if anyone says they'd actually use it, then people would look at them as if they were a bad person. I know if I had a death note, there are people I'd want to use it on. I don't think I'd get rid of it. I'd prolly put it up somewhere. (Maybe it could come in handy for something like a burgular or if you're life somehow turns into a horror movie. Ha.) But.. then again, knowing its there could be a temtation.. =/. I'm kinda stuck on this one.

If there was a truly truly evil person with no doubt of them killing etc I may think about using it. Knowing me I'd probably put it in my room, loose track of it and find it five years later.
If I was convinced of its true power I would burn the thing as soon as possible. This would prevent anyone else from ever using it, and protect myself from the occasional bouts of anger in which I don't think anything through and act rashly. However I can't say that if the time came, I'd throw away the potential power of a God. I don't know if I'm a noble enough person. |

In most circumstances I wouldn't use it. Can't say much more than that, without breaking the rules for this thread and I don't feel like getting banned.
I wouldn't destroy it, and I wouldn't try to change the world like Light was either. Eventually I might use it for advancement of my friends and myself, but I doubt any circumstance would arise that would justify killing someone for that situation. Since killing is the only thing it can do, it would have to meet my first citeria, which I can't explain here. Needless to say that would be a one in a million shot. Of course the death god can do certain things for you as well, so you can might be able to manipulate things that way, without killing. spoiler[But if you end up not using it very much, or at all, he might just write your name in the book out of boredom. It might be best just to burn it, to get rid of your death god if, just in case he deems you unentertaining] |

If I found a Death Note I'm sure I'd probably test it out just to see if it was real, probably on someone randomly unconnected to me. Supposing it did work I'd probably hide it though most likely not relinquish ownership of it. A death note, if you think about it...is sort of like a nuke, it's powerful, very exact, and while you should probably never use it, there may come some rare day when absurd circumstances you could never imagine would force you to use it. That's why I'd want to keep it, probably in a very thick safe, hidden somewhere, and just leave it there in case.

If I had it, I would write the name of any bad person who I think should be away from the surface of the earth for their shocking acts in the history of mankind onto the book. If I feel like I should, I'd use it on murderers, rapists, robbers, child pornographers, cannibals and necrophiliacs. Just to make certain areas a better place. For instance, I've done research on sick twisted dude from Germany on Wikipedia and it said that he stalked males on the internet and set them to his trap where he'd mutilate them and eat their penises. Well it's a good thing he's in jail for all of eternity for his shocking crimes. Now if his name was on the book, he'd most likely die and go straight to Hell for cannibalism and murder. Then everyone in Germany would be glad since he's a very sick man.
As for a shinigami, it would probably be a ghoul with a skull mask like face and a hairy skinny body. |

that's exactly what Raito/Light set out to do, the problem is that in the idea of "making a better world" you make yourself no better than a criminal by murdering others. While I could see possible situations it may be acceptable (taking out a group of people who have a nuke and have stated an intent to detonate it in a populated area), and even then it should be a last resort. Otherwise you'd just end up becomming corrupt and evil as Raito became. He originally was just a bright and aloof student, but he let his ideals take hold once he found an "easy path" to his goal it warped him over time to be beyond feeling any real human emotion. You'd just be repeating the entire thing with slightly different specifics. |

![]() The power of a deity is very tempting and is often the subject of literature and media. It's like magic, the solution to the insoluble we all hope for. The abuse of said power is also often the subject of literature and media, though. So realistically speaking (as realistically as speaking about an imaginary wish-fulfillment execution method can be at least) I'd destroy it without hesitation. I personally consider the power to take away human life to be a Very Big Deal, something with most humans -- governments included (yes I am a pacifist of sorts) -- should not have a right to in any normal circumstances. The "Counter-Terrorism Death Note" is tolerable (neutral) to me morally: it's simply just another weapon in human hands; the "Avenger Death Note" on the other hand is a god complex. *skipping the sentient and mischievous, deranged, or simply insane Shinigami factor which might, erm, complicate things* |

That's ridiculous. The man is insane, not that that makes what he did any less horrific, but I don't think it'd do any good to the world if he was murdered with a death note. He's in prison where he will be for the rest of the life and if anything you'd just be doing him a favour. Killing him would not erase his crimes nor would it prevent other insane people from comitting something similar. Personally I'd shred the book so that each page would be divided into hundreds, then I'd throw the shreds off a tall building and watch as the citizens are touched by the paper snow and see the death god. That would be hilarious and a fine way to end the existence of the book. |
