I would highly recommend the Manga, I rated Wandering Son as a masterpiece for both (and it makes both my anime and manga top 10s), as the manga is slower and divulges more into each character especially the supporting characters.
I do agree that the children (as that is what they are) seem more mature than thier years but I don't think it damages the story in anyway, if anything it shows that children can be more open minded and accepting than adults; it also begs the question "why, at times, can children be more accepting than "mature" adults. |

I don't think I have watched enough anime to do a bottom 10 as of yet. I will admit I am not too too picky with anime either. I will give a show a good 6-7 episodes before I will decide to give up on it. I admit there is a pretty sizable gap in-between my anime watching as a teenager and young adult until now. That and the fact that most of my anime has consisted of Gundam series as well. I am sure this list will change and evlove as I watch more Anime and try to vary up what I watch. I will try to keep this spoiler free as much as I can as well. With that said here is my current list of my PERSONAL top 10 anime.
I am going to throw in one honorable mention right here. Naruto. I am less than 150 episodes in, but I am hooked. I am just trying not to burn myself out on it so far, but I can tell it will become a favorite. 10. Gundam Seed/Destiny - I know, I know. Blashphemy, but this is THE show that got me BACK into anime. While there was quite a bit of filler, repeated use of stock footage and a protagonist with a mesiah complex, I still enjoyed it. Many strong female characters. Simply awesome mecha designs. An awesome revolving supporting cast of villains and heroes. A story that at one point had me rooting for both sides (which happens a lot in Gundam). Plenty of eye opening WTF moments. Characters that made me love/hate them. Intrique, espionage, etc. This is one of those shows that has a little bit to offer to really any anime fan Gundam or otherwise. While there are many more Gundam series that are admittedly better than this, I still find myself reminiscing about Seed/Destiny and building models based on the show. 9. Robotech - The grand daddy of them all for me. I saw this show before I ever even got to see Transformers, Voltron or Gundam. The fact that Macross is still going to this day in multiple forms really speaks to the overall sotries and designs that became Robotech here in America. Roy Focker, Rick Hunter and lisa hays are still benchmark characters I measure a lot of other characters gainst. While the show hasn't aged as well as others over the years, I still get giddy when I fire it up in my dvd/bluray player from time to time. 8. Gundam Wing - What's that? a Gundam Anime show in prime time? I remember working at a comic book shop and people coming in to buy model kits from the show, picking up import copies on VHS (yes VHS) and people talking about it both good and bad that probably hadn't seen any other anime on TV other than maybe Sailor Moon or DBZ. While I didn't care too much for the thought of the Gundams being always ALL POWERFUL or them rebuilding them to beat whoever managed to beat them, the action was still awesome and the villains tried so so hard. As a Gundam model builder and huge Gundam fan. this show also provided my favorite Gundam design ever... granted it didn't come until the very end of the series (the movie), but I adore the Gundam Deathscythe Hell Custom. Yes i am biased here. The show was good. The action was great and the story was easy for newcomers to get into. It was like G Gundam for a slightly newer generation. 7. Heaven's Lost Property - just pure dumb fun. Another show that kind of had multiple aspects to it like some others on my list. Religions, war, sci-fi, fighting, ecchi, comedy, etc. Another main character I could relate to (yes as both a bit of a perv and as a good hearted/good natured person). I feel like the biggest complaint I can give this show is that it never really finished the story. It left too much open by the end. It's definitely not a show for everybody, but if you give it a try and just laugh along with the absurdity of it all, I feel it has the potential to be enjoyed by a wide audience. With all the seriousness that the show can tend to lend itself to there is also plenty of ecchi moments, jokes about boobs and panties, a perverted main character and lots of laughs. 6. The Familiar of Zero - I know I know. This show can be sickenly sweet and simple at times, but thats why I love it damnit. It reminded me a lot of a Harry Potter-esque realm with not quite as much plot or intrique, but there was still enough there. I loved all the colors and brightness of the show. Toungue-in-cheek humor mostly dealing with boobs and ecchi situations. The tension of the constant "will they or won't they" get together and thinking to myself "just shut up and kiss already." The show reminded me of being a kid in love but not sure if it was right or not. The main male character, Saito, really reminds me a lot of myself in high school as well. That might sound odd or sad to some, but sometimes you just relate that way. There were so many underyling stories about faith, inner strength, the power of love, family dynamics and a tiny bit of politics and war as well. Some of the story lines did feel a bit rushed at times, but the overall humor and plain dumb fun of the show had meed hooked until the very end. I wish there could be more stories about where Saito and Lousie went and did after the show ended. Sadly I doubt that will ever happen. 5. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - This show was just so so good. I love shows where the hero(s) aren't the all powerful end-all-be-all badasses. I like my heroes having to work for their success. It makes things even better in this series when the heros are constantly damning theirselves and trying to atone for their sins while simultaneously coming to an understanding about how the world tends to really work. Even after watching the original, once i got through the first 10 or so episodes, this show just really clicked for me. Many episodes left me with either a sense of heartache for what just happened, or a sense of relief for what the protagonists might have accomplished. When a show makes you feel things, you know there was something good there. 4. Gundam 00 - A Gundam story dealing with politics, fighting/peace in the middle east and well as a bit of Western Asia. A group of people who's strings are being pulled elsewhere calling themselves freedom fighters and fighers for peace, yet still using imposing and sometimes violent manners. A story partially about religious zealots and idolotry. Supurb animation with not nearly as much re-used stock footage as many Gundam series. Great overall pacing and not too much in the way of filler or flashbacks that tend to haunt a lot of Gundam series. Just a great overall solid show, even if not as many of my fav. Gundam/Mecha came from this show. The just overall quality of the show really shines. 3. Zeta Gundam - Almost as much as Robotech/Macross this show got me into Anime and mecha. This show still has some of my favorite Gundam designs and influences to this day. It was a sequel that still held on as it's own thing. It stood on it's own strengths and own two legs. I still have yet to see a series with more simple and clean designs to the mecha, yet still looking sharp and powerful. Characters in this show, much like MSG, are still brought up and talked about in other UC Timelines. Zig Zeon! 2. Sword Art Online - I know this is a popular one. I recently just finished watching SAO II. I had watched SAO some time in early 2013. As an at the time big MMO player and fan, I was really interested in it from that aspect. Then the show itself threw me for a loop. I could care less about the MMO aspect of it, but just thesimple story of survival, overcoming odds, discovering one's inner strength, sacrifice and love. At times a few episodes did seem a bit rushed, but by the end the should had me literally yelling out WTF so many times that it still leaves a mark on my psyche today. This definitely wasn't any kind of kid's show. The true villain by the end of the first series gave me the creeps. The fact that we actually might not be too many years away from these kinds of potential actions by people is kind of freaky as well. While the show is based in multiple forms of fantasy, the stories and themes are still as real as they get. I can not wait for the third season to get here. 1. Code Geass - I don't know what else to say about this show other than how it truly sucked me in. It had a very distinct art style. The colors were the brightest of the brights and the darket of the darks, as were the characters. You had a main protagonist that made you love, hate, fear and respect him all in the matter of a few episodes. Yet, you still cheered for him. The action was off the hook. The death scenes were almost always great. Plenty of action. So much twisting and turning in the plot. Martial arts, espionage, mecha fighting. The show truly had a little bit of everything. It even had enough sci-fi and creepiness to it to appeal to that part of my fandom. The show was just the total package for me. @ Yamstarch
There are actually 4 seasons of Saito and Louise. I have all four seasons on Malaysian bootlegs which I am replacing as Funimation releases each season. It is a shame the series was out of print for so long in the USA. I hate to buy bootlegs, but I love the series and did not want to be without it. |

What the hey might as well...
Top 10 1. Revolutionary Girl Utena Ikuhara I love you you magnificent bastard. The movie in particular. I am who I am today because of this series. So beautiful and moving. 2. Neon Genesis Evangelion Super close second. Other than Utena I can't think of another anime I've seen that deals with such raw emotions. I usually hate giant robot stuff too. 3. My Neighbor Totoro #1 Kid's movie ever Screw Spirited Away, this is Miyazaki's best. 4. Akira Manga's a lot better, but I've seen this in a theater screen and WOW. 5. Robot Carnival Yeah there's a couple average segments, but stuff like Presence and Cloud really move me. Haunting stuff. 6. Puella Magi Madoka Magica Third movie can go to hell) but damn the series so good. 7. Wolf's Rain Damn it why T__T 8. Urusei Yatsura Beautiful dreamer especially but I love the series too so cute. 9. Escaflowne Series tore my heart out. 10. Princess Tutu So cute and so many twists and turns Worst Five 1. Blood C (TV) This series can go to hell. I actually watched all of it. I've never seen a show actively hate its audience. The last episode was basically gross torture porn along with the creators pointing and saying 'haha you morons you watched this show for nothing. See ya! ' I used to love Clamp. This made me hate them. (And even chobits didn't make me hate them!) 2. Sailor Moon Crystal Let's just pretend this didn't happen, okay? The shittennou x senshi pairings just really twisted the knife too. 3. Kannazuki no Miki / Destiny of the Shrine Maiden Hate how people put this up as the best yuri series ever. UGH. It has so many anime cliches it almost seems like a parody. Also spoiler[RAPE =/= healthy relationship!!!!!] 4. Perfect Blue This movie actually made me physically ill. 5. Rurouni Kenshin New Kyoto Arc I got so happy when I heard new Kenshin anime was coming... then I actually saw it. |

Thanks, Lili-Hime. I've added your list to the index on the front page.
Great list: I've rated three of your selections as masterpiece - Revolutionary Girl Utena, Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Princess Tutu. I've also rated Perfect Blue as excellent but, having read some of your comments around ANN I can well understand why it would raise some red button issues for you. Like you I dislike giant robot stuff but I also disliked Neon Genesis Evangelion the first time I watched it. I've come around a bit since then and, oddly, PMMM has helped me understand better what NGE was about and the impact it had. |

Thanks, yeah lol I too really didn't like Evangelion when I first watched it but I rewatched it and grew to really love it. I totally realize my opinion about Perfect Blue isn't a popular one, but eh it just went too far for my tastes.

I love Perfect Blue myself but the story is definitely not an easy one to digest. It's certainly not for everyone. I know several friends who simply could not get into it because it was too......raw for lack of a better term.

Rather than listing my Top Ten Anime Shows/Movies, I'm going to switch it up a bit and give my Top Ten Favorite Anime Episodes. Be warned: this post is cursed with spoilers, although I tried to keep them to a minimum whenever possible.
---- #10: "Pair" (Simoun, episode 25) Simoun - otherwise known as Studio DEEN's attempt to produce the least-marketable anime series of all time - contained a lot of scenes that were just plain weird... but no one was prepared for an episode with multiple sex change operations, closed-loop time travel, bizarre existential soliloquies, the most tense slow dance of all time, and two girls making out through a prison cell wall... a collection of memorable moments that made Simoun's penultimate installment into the most provocative anime episode I've ever seen. ---- #9: "5 Home" (The World God Only Knows: The Goddess Arc, episode 3) When Keima first announces his plan to have five meaningful romantic encounters with five girls in one five hour period, even his demonic sidekick is skeptical. Keima has a "system", though, and what follows is an essential viewing experience for fans of harem comedies. ---- #8: "Hydrangeas" (Strawberry Panic!, episode 8) All the fly honeys want to share their umbrellas with Nagisa, but there just isn't enough Nagisa to go around... or enough umbrellas. Although I give Strawberry Panic a lot of crap, this is probably my favorite episode from any "cute girls doing cute things" series. Now, give these cute girls some pills or something. ---- #7: "I Want You" (Dear Brother..., episode 8) Hey, speaking of pills, it's Dear Brother! Specifically, it's the episode where Mariko throws the world's saddest birthday party. Five minutes into this episode, you get the feeling that it's going to be dark, but you never suspect just how dark the show is willing to go. Throw in the show's distinct art style, and you have an episode that any fan of dark shoujo stories should check out. ---- #6: "Those women longed for the touch of others' lips, and thus invited their kisses." (Neon Genesis Evangelion, episode 15) This episode had so many great, emotionally powerful scenes. The Shinji x Asuka scene stands out in my mind as the first moment when I legitimately enjoyed Asuka's character, and appreciated what she brought to the story. Watch this if you want to remind yourself why so many people still think Evangelion was the best anime ever made. ---- #5. "The Savior of the World" (Spinning Penguindrum, episode 15) This was the first Penguindrum episode I ever saw, and it completely blew me away, despite the fact that I had no idea what on earth was going on. Not that I understand the show any better after seeing the series multiple times... what's the deal with all the penguins? Anyway, if this episode doesn't make you cry a little bit, then you probably were never an awkward teenage girl. ---- #4. "Weird" (Serial Experiments Lain, episode 1) Whenever I meet people who tell me they're "not really that into anime", I usually ask them if they've seen the first episode of Lain. This is an especially great show for people who grew up in the 80s and early 90s, who can remember what it was like when most people didn't have an email address, and only geeks knew how to use the Internet. ---- #3. "And Someday, Together, We'll Shine" (Revolutionary Girl Utena, episode 39) A good final episode is just as important as a good first episode, especially when a show is as cryptic as Utena. Rather than giving away all the show's secrets, "And Someday, Together, We'll Shine" gives the audience even more to think about. I thought it was an absolutely perfect way to end the series. ---- #2. "Pride" (Amagami SS, episode 23) "Ayatsuji Tsukasa" is probably my favorite arc from any anime. The protagonist Junichi simply does not know what is going on in his girlfriend Tsukasa's head, and it is just as hard for the viewer to understand Tsukasa's feelings even after seeing the entire series. When you finally understand how Tsukasa thinks, and why she does the things she does during this episode, it is a tremendously rewarding feeling. ---- #1. "The Keychain" (Maria-sama ga Miteru, episode 41) I've mentioned in other threads that Maria Watches Over Us is my favorite anime ever made. For me, the franchise's main strength is its complexity: it can be interpreted as a show about student council politics, a satire, or (gasp) as a thinly-veiled, full-blown yuri show. Central to all of these interpretations is Yumi Fukazawa's slow transformation from an awkward and insecure Rosa Chinensis en bouton petit soeur into a magnanimous and terrifying Rosa Chinensis. "The Keychain" shows Yumi Fukazawa in full bloom, as she prepares to finally conquer her greatest rival, and secure the lineage of the Red Rose Family. |

Thanks for your list, BodaciousSpacePirate. I've added it to the first page.
Back in 2012 Key, ANN reviewer and fellow moderator, ran a Best First Episode tournament. You may wish to check it out. Serial Experiments Lain was nominated but was eliminated early on. I thought it would do much better as it also one of my all-time favourite episodes. The four finalists were: East of Eden v Hanasaku Iroha and Haibane Renmei v Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit. Moribito went on to defeat East of Eden in the final. I agree that the last episode of Revolutionary Girl Utena is terrific. Utena failed as a prince but succeeded gloriously as a revolutionary. |
