I have said this before, but I consider Japanese animation to be one of the greatest forms of entertainment and artistic expression in the world. I enjoy how it encompasses numerous different genres and themes to create a vast spectrum of stories. As with all forms of media, some anime series are better than others, but most are well-made enough to capture my interest to at least some extent.
However, there are some anime series that do not seem to have had much effort devoted to their creation, which is quite unfortunate, in my mind, becuase they have great potential otherwise. I am referring to hentai (erotic/pornographic) anime, which very often has poorly-developed plots and characters. One thing that I have noticed about hentai anime is that an OVA will often end after only two to four episodes, leaving its storyline unfinished. Excellent examples of such series are Black Gate, Cambrian, Immorality, and Jiburiru the Devil Angel. Each of those series ended very abruptly without resolving their plots, similarly to an ongoing series such as Bleach, Naruto, or One Piece ending during the middle of a story arc. Does anyone have any idea why such a thing occurs? Is it because the creators were unable to think of a continuation of the story? This seems unlikely to me, because there have been some (admittedly very rare) hentai series with excellent stories. Is it because the creators did not have enough money to continue the series? This also seems unlikely, because I cannot imagine that a hentai anime series would have a smaller production budget than a normal anime series. Or is it simply that the creators simply did not feel like finishing the story? I do not wish to consider this possibility, because I do not wish to imagine that a person would simply abandon a story in such a manner and leave their audience with an unresolved plot line. Regardless of the reason, I find this occurrence to be incredibly annoying, since in the four series that I mentioned above, I really want to know what happens next. So, what does everyone else have to say on this topic? |

hmm well hentai are something different from regular shows. I mean I havne't seen porn but I would guess that there storyline has no point. Hentai are more meant to be something pleasurable.
I don't know why anyone would not want to finish their storyline. It drives people crazy wondering what could have happen. If the show wasn't making enough money they could have cancelled it. |

I would agree to an extent that I was quite disappointed with a few like Maple Colors and Love is the Number of Keys. but on the other hand plot and complex charactorization is not something I generally expect from porn. I've seen some hentai that were suprisingly successful in doing so though.

I could care less about the plot development in Hentai. I just watch it to make super happy fun time for my hand and my little dragon. That's all it's good for anyway,

Do you watch hentai for the plot and character development I have always thought that people watch it to please themselves |

I think that there have been three types of hentai that I've seen. There's the hentai that has a reasonable ending to it, and ends. Then there's the hentai that ends the storyline in the way that keeps you hanging, wanting to know what really happens in the end, and then there's the hentai where the series doesn't seem to want to end, and that type is boring as hell. There was actually one hentai that I was watching where I was wanting to see more of the story rather than the main purpose of what hentai is all about, so in a way it does spark a certain interest, but 97 percent of the time hentai is for the sole purpose of things you would do in the dark. Yes I have noticed this a bit.

you expect plot or character development in hentai?
hentai is porn... the soul purpose of it's creation is to erouse the viewer by showing explicit scenes of animated people having sex. would you expect terrific acting and engrossing storylines in live action porn? i wouldn't think so. |

About the countless amount of hentai series that aren't completed;
My guess is that it's all about the money and they don't give a damn about concluding the storyline (because like, most of the audience doesn't really care about the storyline either). As soon as the last OVA they've released doesn't bring in enough money they cancel the series. Always leaving the last OVA's storyline open, in case the series makes enough money for them to continue making more episodes. I'm betting most hentai storylines are made up as each episode is released. Last edited by zombie828 on Fri Jul 06, 2007 1:12 am; edited 1 time in total |

I agree with mostly everyone's views on Hentai and how it's well basically point less to have a plot. But since this topic is called what it is, and well we are already talking about porn I kinda of wondered why unlike Hentai Yaoi sometimes has the plots tied up. I mean shouldn't it be just like Hentai and not have a plot at all, then again even with dealing with very graphic titles, I find that I tend to push the off button if there isn't a least a sprinkling of plot when it comes to Yaoi but with Hentai I don't really care.(Not that I watch alot of Hentai).

If you were directing that at me then here's my resonse: Yes, I agree that hentai is porn. There's no getting around that. But in it's format, which is the format of anime, they always try to have a storyline. When you compare it to live action porn, of course in all the live action all you're going to see is people screwing around. Hentai always has a story though. 97 percent to me like I said in my above post of the time I think that the plots in hentai series are very poor so all that they're there for is to make people feel good about themselves. But there are hentai series that I have seen where I have actually been interested in the storyline, because it was catchy enough to make me follow that instead of the sex. In fact, sometimes I think that certain hentai might have made a better series had they not been hentai. |

Bible Black has had a sequel, a prequel, and a spinoff to it is what it looks like, but then there's so many episodes within a certain Bible Black series, so there is actually quite a few of them. |

I have to say that pretty much all the series I have seen have had an ending that works (maybe not great but so what?)
Remember the ending of most of them is meant to give the idea of continued 'relations' between the characters. So the guy in the harem (it's almost always the harem with the same three stereotyped females) ends up in a situation where he could, after the series ends continue the 'relationship' with any one or all of them. Sure some go for a real ending like Koihime but the majority will end up with the main guy going out with or marrying one of the girls (Campus for example) |
