So this is why the single for Kiss & Cry is set so far away dispite the fact you can already buy it off the Japanese iTunes. I guess Hikki is setting herself up for a comeback with all the tie-ins to popular series, i.e. Hana Yori Dango and now Evangelion.

I'd just like to mention I hate that nickname with a passion (no inside reference intended). It sounds way to close to hicky and thus in my mind it sounds like a Porn Star name.
On the subject of the song, she's definetely one of those few idol singers that actually stands out and seems to take some passion (again not meant to be a joke) in the actual technical composition and presentation of her songs beyond the image and persona she presents. Definetly a better choice than somebody like Shoko Nakagawa with her cosplaying and mediocore singing that may entrance Otaku, but for me can't overcome her lack passion for singing what otherwise might be great songs (Sorairo Days anyone). So yeah, Hikaru Utada, lose the nickname somehow, and keep up the effort to make something out of this shallow idol trend of anime songs meant to promote image and careers.
I'm having one of those moments where I remember when anime songs actually felt like they had a lot to do with the actual series and were timed very well with the opening video. The only one I can think of now is Howling from Darker Than Black, where they actual mention some major plot points of the series and possibly even some spoilers. I guess you just have to hold on to those few songs that really do work for you in a sea of meh idol-pop.

Having spent the last decade knowing the series with the original OP and ED songs... I think it will feel rather dirty to go without them. I particularly didn't like the version used for the preview of EVA1.0. And if it's anything like the Kingdom Hearts songs, it will feel really out of place.
But, I think I hold the mindset of trying to tie this EVA1.0 and the original EVA together. So long as I take the new one for a different animal, I think it should work out alright in the end.

I love Utada Hikaru, she's definitely my fave. She actually hadn't planned on being involved for Hana Yori Dango 2 but the producer I believe approached her for a newer version of First Love.

Same.
The new EVA movies will indeed be very interesting...I'm surprised they didn't get Megumi or Takahashi to do it, though.

She's a good singer and all, but I don't see how this would be doing her or the series any good. I mean, her album in the US flopped, and I'm not that big of a remake fan in the first place.

I... actually dislike Utada's voice. Songwriting is a different business, but it's not going to do much for me if she's the only one singing them.
I agree with the theme song thing, though. While some anime -- like Death Note's first set of themes -- have some very nice and fitting theme songs, others have... random stuff that may or may not sound pleasant.

I like Utada. I like Evangelion.
But does the world truly need yet another version of Fly Me to the Moon?

HOORAY! Utada Hikaru is my favorite singer, so this is great news. And for those of you worried about this match-up, don't be, because Hikki has a lot of versatility and talent as a musician. She'll come up with something out of this world for Evangelion.
