It's alright. Is it worth 10 bucks? I'm still unsure of that. Subscribing makes it $5/issue and I think it is worth that, so I'll probably subscribe to it.
On a side note, for their Hellsing Ultimate vol. 2 review, not a single picture was actually from volume 2, they were all from volumes 1 and 3. That was a bit odd.

I didn't think it was any better or worse than the other magazines out there. I'd pick it up if there was something on the dvd I was interested in, or I needed something to read while I was waiting for a trombone lesson or something. Otherwise, I could take it or leave it for ten bucks. Although the idea of subscribing for five bucks per issue is kind of interesting.

I did but I wasn't too impressed. I mean it was nice but it seemed too.......out of order. I didn't feel it flowed very well. Maybe it's just me. I simply felt the different sections didn't flow well from one to another. The articles themselves seemed kinda convoluted. I'm happy sticking with PA, AI, and the occasional Newtype.

Yes, it does resemble Newtype, both size-wise and with the dvd, manga, and poster inserts. The articles are more pertinent to what's available now in America (Newtype SUCKS with this). And it tries to cover all parts of the otaku not just translated interviews with Japanese voice actors (ALL Newtype is good for). And it's not affiliated with any anime/manga company like all the other magazines so that's cool I guess.

I had the opportunity to flip through an issue after finding one on the newsstand that someone had opened to steal the DVD (@$$hole, but good for me I guess). I opted against it after discovering the back half of the magazine seemed to focus entirely on buliding Gundam models and live-action Asian flims... neither of which I want to read about. I've also been spolied by Newtype USA's big, pretty pictures. It makes OtakuUSA look downright barren by comparison. (The layout bugged me too, but I can't pin down why.)
Knowing the subscription drops the price by half does make it more tempting, tho'. Maybe later on I'll hit their website and do it. (The site sucks, by the way... I went on to try and find out what was on the DVD, but there was no listing anywhere of current issue contents... I ended up going to the forum and clicking a YouTube link to some guy's boring video-journal just to learn what was on the disc- It's Boogiepop Phantom, School Rumble, and Ninja Nonsense by the way. School Rumble being the only one not put on a newtype disc previously, so it wasn't really worth it.)
To be quite honest, I was more impressed with the issue of Protoculture Addicts just above OtakuUSA on the shelf. I'm gonna give that a better look next time I'm in.

I've been looking all over town for this damn magazine, I don't know if Southern Cal gets no love but damn. All the Barnes and Nobles (along with Borders) don't seem to be carrying it and I really like to check it out seeing as how there are lots of folks (whom I like) writing for it.

Blasphemy! ^_-
Anyway, I managed to find the last copy available here at Barnes & Noble a couple weeks ago and went ahead and picked it up. Not too bad really, but it doesn't really compare to Newtype USA. Probably I would rank it better than AnimeInsider at least, which I used to buy. It actually felt kind of strange reading it left to right since size-wise it is just like NTUSA.
As for the contents, the writers seem to be very knowledgeable about the material and the articles are well-written, but the actual presentation seems to be off a little bit. By that I mean the graphic design choices and layout choices...not that they were bad, but it did look a little awkward at times. I think they will get better though; I imagine it's not an easy thing to do and there is definitely a learning curve involved. Certainly I will pick up the next one whenever it comes out, which I guess will be in two months or so.

Heh heh- to be honest, I'd gone to the store fully intending to buy the magazine just for that episode, which is when I found the opened issue I thumbed through. I decided it wasn't worth $10 for a magazine that didn't appeal to me, just to get an episode of a show I was buying on release anyway.

Protoculture Addicts isn't affiliated with any anime companies either.

I think he meant in terms of a releasing/production type company. Like how Newtype is affiliated with ADV and AI with Wizard, which isn't an anime company but do you get the idea? I think this is what Hitokirishadow meant anyway.

i just got it today and flipping as we speak.
the layout isnt as interesting on first glance. but it might be because im so spoiled by newtypes pretty images.
not thick enough to me. it had okay topics to talk about though. its poster was cool but i gave it to my bro for the tranformers pic.
the TAF coverage was cool. the videogame section is best to me at this point.
no intrest in toys or live action...
needs a bigger cosplay section....
music...yay.
good little comic at the end. the insert manga i didn't get to reading yet.
I think theres a lot of potential here. maybe it will get better as time goes. i mean animerica and anime insider had to have a rough start. and whoever said the website needed work was right. but these things are really hard. its a learn as you go process.

I found this at a chain grocery store. Those of you not finding at the bookstore may want to look THERE instead.
It's not bad, but it's definitely worth the subscriber discount over the newsstand price. Patrick Macias seems to be writing from the standpoint of the more seasoned yet still very adolescent anime fan, which is something I can get behind even as I sort of wince at it in myself. The reviews have convinced me to at least give Black Lagoon and Hellsing Ultimate a once-over.
I'm on the fence about subscribing.

I’m surprised people here aren’t giving Otaku USA better reviews. I bought the first issue and I really liked it. In my opinion it seems alot better then Newtype USA. They almost seem to be around the same page count (Newtype has really been cutting down pages since they started) but Newtype is selling for around 12$ while otaku USA is only 9.99. And if I’m not mistaken the new type DVD samples have 3 episodes on them? Its the same as Otaku USA. So it seems like your getting the better deal with Otaku USA with around the same page count and DVD episodes but at a cheaper price.. Or am I missing something?
What really makes Otaku USA better in my opinion are the reviews, and columns on other things related to anime. Their reviewers actually give reviews instead of the PR fluff that Newtype does. Where they apparently seem to like everything they review. Well I admit that Newtype USA is good when it comes to the pages of artwork and interviews with Japanese seiyuu, but other then that most of the magazine seem like fluff. Id rather has a magazine with more substance.
I’m glad Otaku USA is out I hope it sticks around, its nice to have a anime magazine that’s more for fans who have been around for a little while then more of the newcomer toonami/AS crowd.
I can’t wait to get the next issue.
