I found the choices to be interesting, though the one I chose is not representative of my situation.
I only have one bootleg, purchased when I didn't know there was such a thing, and well I still paid 60 dollars (Canadian) for it...
In terms of my downloading fansubs, I really really try to make sure that what I'm downloading isn't licensed. Which is why I go through live-evil, who seem to be very responsible about stopping all distribution once a series has entered licensed status.
Though at the same time, I will keep my fansubs even after I've bought real copies (which is almost always the case, only two series that I haven't bought after having downloaded them) mainly because I either forget that I have them, or because I use them as "lending copies" to friends who don't have DVD players, or connections quick enough to download a series like Creamy Mami from live-evil. And the reason I burn so much is because though I have a fast connection I have a very small hard drive, and space is at a premium.
At the same time, I am a student and I don't have enough money to spend 50 dollars on 3-5 episodes of a series. This is why I've been trying to focus on series that are well priced and ones I really like. Maison Ikkoku and Excel Saga are two series that spring to mind in this category. Another saving grace is the high density of used dvd stores in Toronto. And I have to say much of my anime are legal licensed copies purchased through a used setting. And in the end I don't count any of my burned CDs as actually a part of my anime collection, they are only a sort of stop-gap measure until I can afford the real thing, and that is always my end goal.

I download some fansubs, but only of show's that have been licensed. I do buy some shows on DVD, but only if its something I really like; and almost everything else thats interesting I've rented from one place or another (netflix being the best)

I used to buy bootleg stuff until I got wise about it and just bought legit stuff (the codefree DVD player helps). I don't download anything anymore. Too hazardous for your health.
Besides the quality is much better.

Well, for most of the fansubs I got on old-fashioned VHS from about 1994-1998, I eventually bought the legit release, when they appeared (the first season of Sailor Moon was one of the final things I had to replace), or, in the case of Kimagure Orange Road, which I couldn't afford to get all at once back when AnimEigo was selling it as a preordered LaserDisc box set-only, I taped over.
The only series I've downloaded more than an episode of was Narutaru, which, according to John Oppliger of Anime Nation, AN Entertainment couldn't acquire because someone else apparently got it first (though the "someone else" has yet to be announced), and I have a moral dilemma. I liked most of the series, but I found the three episode climax abhorrent, cruel to the characters without much context provided, very depressing, and a total shift in gears from the rest of the show. Even once I found out what the context of the infamous scene in volume 6 of the manga was, it didn't make it that much better. I might just destroy the CD-R disks I burned the episodes to rather than buying the legit release... unless I rewatch it and find more of a context for what happens to the characters. I ended up agreeing with John Oppliger that this series wasn't something which should have been animated. (I haven't read that far in the manga and I haven't been able to find any good spoiler sites for Narutaru/Shadow Star beyond the first few volumes, but i get the idea that there's some more "context" for what happens in the stories which were adapted into episodes 11 through 13 in the manga which was cut out of the anime.)
I downloaded the first episode of Popotan, but it was all just a bunch of "fan service" (defined here as a bunch of girls whose well-drawn and animated breasts have a tendency to pop out of their clothing several times an episode), so I doubt I'll bother with the rest of the series, either fan-subbed or legit.
I would buy the live-action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, the other Japanese thing I download, if they released that in North America.

I do download anime like mad, but that is because I'm really only on a high-speed connection when I'm at school. I stockpile fansubs to watch during breaks and other times when I'm deprived of internet access.
I have downloaded liscensed series before, but that usually occured after I had started downloading a series. If I'm more than halfway through a series and it gets liscensed, I won't drop it unless all the groups do. That, and I do download Inuyasha but it's readily apparent that it will take them years to catch up to where it's at now.
However, I spend obscene amounts of money on R1 DVDs ... I have over 80 in my collection and purchase 1-5 DVDs a month. I love dubs, that's why I buy up DVDs left and right. *shrugs*
Downloading anime fansubs is more akin to collecting cards, at least, to me. I know I haven't watched half the stuff I've downloaded. But I do like to have it on hand. I'm strange. If I'm going to get interested in a series, I'd like to have the entire thing to watch at once. Then I can decide if I'm going to buy the R1 release.

I think I've dowloaded at most one fansub. Otherwise, I'm strictly legitimate.

I download fansubs. I also spend close to 1k a year on domestic release anime dvd's. That number is that high as a direct result of the fansubs.
I believe in order to hold msyelf as a responsible fan, i buy the domestic release of any series i thought was worth watching the whole series on fansub.
I do not think this behavior is the exception, maybe more likely a silent majority in the community.

I mostly watch anime series, and when I am going to start on a new series I ALWAYS download the first 4-5 fansubs. If I like it i buy the whole show, If i dont like it I delete them. I did it both with Gunbuster as well as Neon Genesis Evangelion.

When i first got into Anime in a big way about 3½ years ago the U.K. anime scene was virtually dead, only MVM and i beleive Manga had any sort of release schedule - most of the older titles were oop and very hard to find (one of the largest HMV's in the country only had about 4 of the 13 Eva tapes for example).
So i ended up getting fansubs of things as i didn't have the ability at the time to even try and import.
However most of those fansubs have now been replaced by the official DVD's*, either from the U.K. in some cases (ADV are doing a great job of releasing new stuff here only months after the U.S.), or more often from the U.S. and Australia for older titles.
I still get fansubs on occassion, but it's rarer and i nearly always end up buying the official release on DVD when it becomes available.
I'll be the first to admit i'm a bit hypocritical in my attitude as i abhor bootleg DVD's but am quite happy to watch a fansub.
*nearly $4000 in the last year.

I can respect that Hypocrisy on the bootleg vs fansub. Fansub is the POTENTIAL loss of revenue that could have gone to a licensed release, a bootleg is the realization of the lost revenue to the company buying the license and ultimately the creators of the work.
a fansub doesn't become a bootleg until it is being distributed after the release is avilable in the market. If you consider it in those terms it is a bit clearer why I can sleep well as a fellow hypocrite on this one

Actually, fansubs are bootlegs the instant they are released/created, not when the anime has been liscesed by an American company. The anime is universally liscensed by the Japanese owner. That owner sells the liscense to the American company.
