Encyclopedia entry. I came across this series while at Book Off and I got the first two volumes for a dollar each. I decided what the heck. I think it was a good experience to read a boxing manga again, after getting the feel from Hajime No Ippo. The story runs along in Takahashi Rumiko fashion, her comedy style and such, with some cute looking girls along the way too. I think I was drawn into spoiler[why the main character can't seem to keep his appetite from getting in the way of his boxing, obviously a downside. But that's what makes you want to read more into the series to eventually find out what happens to him during a match, his training, and in his relationship with a nun.] I think Takahashi Rumiko did some pretty good research on the sport of boxing, and though an older series, I think one of her better ones.

Wow, someone finally read One Pound Gospel!! I think that's my absolute favorite Rumiko title. I think she's going to (finally) finish this title this year? (EDIT: last year actually! W00T!) Volume three is a doozy, hehe.

Wow. I never realized she never finished the series, that's a long way to go for three to four volumes

She apparently finished it last year, although it hasn't been brought over to America yet. I'd love to see Viz do a 4-volume re-release of the series like they did for the Mermaid Saga, but I won't hold my breath....Mermaid Saga at least had a new anime tie-in (the Mermaid Forest TV series) whereas all One Pound Gospel had was a 2-episode OAV series that Viz released sub-only way back in the VHS days. That being said, 1PG is one of my absolute favorite manga, and 2nd only to Maison Ikkoku among Takahashi's work if you ask me. I started reading the series when I was in 16, and being that I was... - on the wrestling team and had to deal with making weight on a daily basis for 3 months of the year, and - at a Catholic high school I was really drawn into the story. Takahashi's take on Catholicism is a little off, but it's pretty fascinating to see how such a different culture approaches the religion. I really, really, really want to see the rest of this series released in English. |

Heh, reading all the people comment (in the older thread) about how One Pound Gospel should be animated reminds me how big a deal the OVA was when it came out because it was the reunion of Toru Furuya & Hiromi Tsuru. Known previously as Kyousuke and Madoka (from KOR). Ah how times change.

Huh...DID NOT KNOW THAT. That's kind of neat, though. I do have to admit, I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to KOR, but I think the last KOR movie, "Summer's Beginning," is hands down one of my favorite anime ever. I bought the complete KOR TV series from Right Stuf, but haven't sat down to watch it yet. Those 13 DVDs are quite daunting. It actually took until ACen last year before I finally tracked down a VHS copy of the 1PG OAV, and I was actually kind of disappointed by it. It wasn't *bad*, but it was just very, very average, and didn't really capture the charm that just oozes out of Takahashi's art. |
