It's always good to get more affordable, legal access to manga!

I don't know if I downloaded the right app, since there's no link in the news article, but it doesn't really seem to be in English unless you count the navigation tabs at the bottom. Even the login prompt is in Japanese.

The in-app store is only available in Japanese, and there doesn't seem to be a way to view only English titles. So even though you can search for the English-language manga titles that are available, you have to know what you're looking for - and you have to know Japanese in order to make a purchase.

The web store seems to be available in English, though. So I guess in theory you could make your purchases there and sync them to your tablet, like you have to do in ComiXology these days.

Or is the in-app store available in English to only US-based users?

While true, it can also mean copyright infringing sites use these scans since they are the "official" scans.

How do we get this BookWalker app?
I used Google to search for a download and did not find anything.

What I really want is the web site for browser viewing, but I could not find that either.

EDIT: I did find something called "Haruhi's Book Walker Navi" from Kadokawa. That is not what the article is about is it?

Does it matter as it's not like physical releases don't get scanned too?

Go to the link at the end of the article for their site;
http://comic-walker.com/en/

Now, in the upper right corner click on where it says "English" (unless you're comfortable reading Japanese language releases...)

A list comes up. Choose a title and go to that page. There's a big red rectangle which is the 'reading app'. It should appear with two links on the side for Google Play (Android) and App Store (iOS) for the mobile apps. Note though the mobile apps seem to be in only Japanese in contrast to the web app...

Edit; Didn't read carefully, the above is for the separate ComicWalker app, not the one this article is about. going to look for directions for the right one...

Edit2;
That was easy. Follow the link in the article, ie;
http://global.bookwalker.jp/info-features/
...In the upper right corner there's links for all three viewers (pc, android, iOS). There's a how-to on the PC version landing page, the mobile apps are more straight-forward.

Yes, that's the right app and yes your purchases are synced to your account through comiXology. I don't recall the registration being Japanese only though, but Japanese and English text. And no, it is not US-based only. You should e-mail them through here if you're having trouble or want to ask if you can download from your country specifically.

Here's an FAQ too btw

Click on the first link pjt_tsubasa posted to find the app. And no, the Haruhi app isn't what you're looking for.

Here is the site:
http://global.bookwalker.jp/

And guys you can also request books both manga and light novels to be added to the site too, then they'll forward your suggestions to the official publishers. If you send them any request I recommend you add links to said series from Amazon JP or their Bookwalker JP site to help narrow things down.

Honestly I feel like this service could finally be the answer to my prayers. Hope they can add more Viz comics in English so I can download them from outside the USA & Canada. I've been waiting forever to buy more digital manga from Latin America. I really hope this succeeds!

I see.
In the sentence "The app also plans to add light novels in the future." the word "add" is the link to the Book Walker web site.
They had me fooled. Embarassed

Thanks to Blanchimont and Student no.0 for the help.

I'd rather wait for Yen Press or someone else to license Riddle Story of Devil, given how awful the interface was on ComicWalker this is probably the same way. I won't spend money on digital manga if the UI is bad and if there's DRM like JManga you can count me out.

if there's any major issue I have with BookWalker at the moment, it's that when you go to the app store in the app it takes you to the Japanese store and I have no idea how the bonk to get to the English store through the app store. Though, you can just make purchases and sync them easily to the app from the web store anyway. I imagine any issues they've seen so far will get handled when the site goes under maintenance tomorrow. The UI isn't bad imo, but it definitely has a good amount of room for improvement and hopefully they'll handle that properly. The app reader itself is very satisfactory if you ask me.
