I’m disappointed by Mr. DeAngelis’s decision. I’d like to know more about why he decided to cancel the title. If the rantings of internet were the major factor in his decision, then I’m severely disappointed. Let’s face it, most of the people who chimed in on this book hadn’t read it. At best, they had seen a few pages and these were usually shown in the context of someone denouncing the book. I would have liked an opportunity to read the book and make my own judgment based on entire work and not biasedly selected samples. (Let me say for the record, this doesn’t effect my positive opinion of Seven Seas or their personnel.)

Perhaps the most disheartening aspect of this entire episode is seeing people make decisions about this work based on fear. Somehow more than just a few people on the ANN message boards and the Seven Sea message boards felt this work had the potential to damage the reputation of anime and manga. That’s ludicrous. For those with short memories, let me remind you that as little as ten years ago some Americans associated anime with porn and with some justification. There was a time when almost half of the anime released in America was either hardcore or softcore porn. Just read Anime Essentials by Poitras, printed in 2000. One of the topics addressed in the book is why anime isn’t porn. The general public’s understanding of anime and manga has come a long way in just the last few years. A title like Nymphet isn’t going to magically erase all that has been achieved. You only have to look at the bookshelves of your local B&N, Borders, Waldens, or library to see all the evidence to the contrary. As I said on the now erasered Nymphet message board, will some reactionary people publicly protest and denounce this book? Sure. It might even make the news like the infamous Mary Jane Watson statue. In the end, will the general public really care? No.

I really wished the Mr. DeAngelis had more faith in the anime and manga community and let the book speak for itself. It’s hard to have an informed discussion, when no one has access to relevant information.

Gomen ne, but Seven Seas have removed all traces of Nymphet's existence from their official website. Crying or Very sad

Well, given the amount of attention Kodomo no Jikan's gotten (no point in calling it Nymphet anymore), hopefully someone else will have the sense to acquire/publish it themselves and cash in.

Agreed on that one. It's kind of hard to believe this whole mess; making a positive press release one day with plans laid infront of us, the next day we're all swimming in the water.

What a coward. I can't belive they just canceled it like this. Why? Because they were afraid it might label them as "lolicons" or something. A big part was played by the retards of several boards who described this manga as "a lolicon's dream" (you who who you idiots are). Well, here's hoping that someone will continue to scan and translate it. Gotta see more of my lovely Rin & Kuro messing with Daisuke's head. Can't wait for the anime...if that gets canceled I'm killing someone.

I am no fan of lolicon manga, but anytime a business folds to pressure of this kind, it's a sad thing.

That said, it may well have been necessary in this case, when you consider Seven Seas' upcoming kids' line. Publishing Kodomo no Jikan while at the same time preparing to launch a costly new attempt to market to wholesome American moms may just have been too difficult a balancing act.

Either way, Jason has a difficult job and he doesn't deserve your scorn on this. Save it for the narrow-minded people who thought they had the right to decide what could go on your shelf.

You know whats BS? This is. It was expected but to get "confirmation" so quickly makes my head spin. I'm sorry Seven Seas buy you've defintly lost a potential customer. I though this company had the balls to step up but apparently they don't. There are some who speak out against it taking the story a lot further than it honestly is based on two pages- but what about the other 30-40% that was wiling to give the book a chance not based solely on the cover?

So does this mean that several other mangas with "over sexualized childern" are going to be coming off the shelves? I'm so pissed right now- its not what I expected to wake up to.

and to those people who are square dancing in joy its bad when any company does anything like this with any title. You'll get something particularly the same one day. I look forward to it.

Just out of curiosity, was that an Angry Video Game Nerd reference?

At least two I'd say. I think this is a pretty poor business decision on their part. People who were against Nymphet's publication aren't going to rush out and buy all the Seven Seas manga they can afford because they cancelled Nymphet, but people like us who were looking forward to it have certainly been put right off of them.

I belive he was refering to Bull S#%t. I would also like to stress out the fact that this is NOT a lolicon manga. If your definition of lolicon manga/anime is loli characters doing inapopriate things.......that 75% of all anime/manga is lolicon anime/manga. Get real people!!! Must you always look at every little thing from a sexual perspective? If a young man enjoys Card Captor Sakura and thinks that Sakura is cute, does that REALLY mean he wants to have sex with her?!!!

Two points of confirmation on Nymphet's cancellation. First, if ICv2 is reporting a rumor and not confirmed information, they tell you up front. They said Jason DeAngelis told them, so you can believe they got direct from him. Second, Adam Arnold said the book was cancelled on his weblog at Seven Seas. I don't think anyone should doubt Nymphet's cancellation.

@Dmon, don't worry, the anime is gonna be played in Japan because unlike people here they tend to be more open minded about these kinds of subjects.

I have to agree with everything the OP has stated thus far, the seem to have only listened to the loud few rather than the bulk, and have lost several potential customers. It's more than just 2 or 3 people, there was been a rather large outcry sense that statement was posted on that site, that is to say, large for the time of day. And sure, the manga may be licensed for an American audience, but apparently they're the only english licensor that was possesion of its rights, so not only did they let down the Americans that were looking forward to it, but also those from other nations who prefer to or HAVE to read it in English. With this incident, I forsee a good deal more people taking Japanese lessons >_>

Edit: Oh yea, and as I posted in the other thread, until I see a real press statement, I'll wait.

What's done is done. Seven Seas have cancelled Nymphet and clearly lost a portion of their fan base, both existing and potential, in doing so. Now, the best we can do is rest our hopes in one (or both) of two possibilities: that someone else will acquire the rights to Kodomo no Jikan from Seven Seas, and/or, when the time comes, someone will license and publish the anime. For now, all we can really do is wait.

Like I said in another thread, this is just a pathetic day for anime "fandom":

Anime "fans" have shown that if a manga falls outside their America-approved, sanitized, sensibilities they have the power to make it disappear. That's just great. Let's start writing up lists of other mangas and animes we've never read or watched, which look potentially damaging to our sterling otaku reputations, so we can prevent them from ever reaching our sacred shores. Pride before entertainment, after all.

This sucks, but I understand why that decision was made. Had this title made it to the shelves, I can see some religious groups rallying about how much this was just pedophililic material and how every otaku was just a pedo, after that, and since your goverment decisions are made on whatever the religious groups want, they'd start banning manga and anime just to "protect" the children...
