Two screens/theaters, both in NYC. The LA opening is on Friday, and then it'll start hitting arthouses throughout the US and Canada. But yeah, this is an extremely strong opening, and the critical response has been very good too. Hell, I think this might be an instance of a Japanese animated film that critics will be more excited about than most anime fans actually are!

Also for comparison, during its opening weekend, Spirited Away, with the name and the marketing machine behind it, brought in just under $450K on 26 screens. So Paprika has an even better per-screen take than that did!

Will Paprika be screening anywhere besides the Landmark in LA? I've looked for other showtimes online and have had no luck at all. I'd love to see it this Friday with some friends, but I don't want to drive all the way down to Culver City.

It has a 90% cream of the crop score right now over at Rotten Tomatoes, which is remarkably good.

Angel: The thing is that no one knew about Spirited Away, while Paprika has its own MySpace page.

Damn straight. When Spirited Away won the Oscar (before my days of anime fandom, mind you), that was the first I'd heard of it.

Anyway, I'm glad to see that Paprika did quite well for just one city. Here's hoping that it will eventually come to a cinema somewhere in my area.

Here ya go: http://www.laemmle.com/viewmovie.php?mid=2663.
You'll probably need to call the theaters to get the showtimes since the site doesn't have it yet.

Glad to be adding to that 45k this weekend... Very Happy

Are you saying that all you have to do is have a myspace page to be more popular? Wink

More then likely on Wednesday or Thursday more of the online sites will have tickets available for purchase.

Ghost in the Shell Innocence was screened in the city I live in which has a population of under 300,000, so I think that shows pretty good likelyhood that Paprika will be shown here too. Plus the theatre that Innocence was shown in has the backing of a large university (and its located on campus) with a strong anime fanbase within its student body and in the surrounding area.

I think only a very small portion of the general population pay attention to movie lineups at typical arthouse theatres. So people (anime fans or not) who would enjoy seeing Paprika end up never realizing it's being shown in their own town, or even discovering it in the first place. Quite tragic.

Oh man I can't wait. I hope(and I am sure they will) ANN posts theater lists when they become available.

I hope they decide to show it at a bunch, because that is the only way it will get close to me.

Whoa!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked You da man! I have yet to see 'Paprika'. Of course a DVD release will be available very soon. And of course that's on our list for next semester. I can't wait to see it.

If you can I would tried to see it in the theaters seeing as how it amazing this film was. I think that watching a movie in theaters just adds so much to the whole experience I know I am going to see it again when it gets added to more theaters near me.

I went to the 7:10 at the AMC Empire tonight with a friend and it was surprisingly filled. Musta been 20-40 people. Honestly not bad for a weekday showing. This bodes incredibly well for me on the potential of this movie.

I was at the afternoon show on Saturday too, the theater was over half full. I was very happy about that.

Looks like it has a good RT score, too. My favorite line: "I can't claim to have followed the story line of Paprika any better than I did Pirates of the Caribbean, but this mind-blowing, adult animated adventure from Japan is half the length and maybe five times as much fun."

The reviewer for that one screwed up, though, and attributed Paprika's seiyuu to Akio Ohtsuka. Rolling Eyes

It went down a bit in PTA, but if it stays strong next week, it could beat the average of POTC3.
