I wouldn't be so sure. In many other countries, including the US, drawings of persons under 18 in sexual situations are automatically classified as depictions of child abuse, even if it's consensual sex between 17-year-olds who are dating. (Apparently Romeo and Juliet laws don't apply to fiction.) I've seen no evidence that the proposed extension of the Japanese law would specify any consideration of age or circumstance.

I am not really sure what your point is.
Are you sayng that this law will apply to manga?
Even though the Japan Times says that it will not:
Quote:
Japan outlaws child porn possession, but explicit manga, anime get green light

Quote:
The Diet voted Wednesday to outlaw possession of child pornography after years of international calls for a crackdown, but the change won’t impact sexually explicit manga and anime depicting young children.

Quote:
Masatada Tsuchiya of the Liberal Democratic Party supported the bill but said he was disappointed.

“I believed we should go a step further and take a look at manga and anime in which children are sexually abused,” he said,

If you are saying that the law will apply to manga do you have a source for that?

A scientific report in Denmark has proved that cartoons, anime & manga do not lead to sex crimes.

No, the law as passed does not apply to anime/manga. I was pointing out that if it had, we have no reason to believe that it would only restrict explicit loli/shota material, as some posters seem to be assuming.

This is an important point that most commentators, especially in the media, seem to miss entirely: most fictional depictions that would be legally defined as "child sexual abuse", in Japan or elsewhere, do not involve what the average layman would consider a child or what the average layman would consider abuse. Restrictions on such depictions have the most prominent effect on limiting the ability to depict teenage sexuality, even in media for teens.

And I'm pretty sure that most of the politicians agitating for the expansion of the current law to extend to anime/manga are entirely aware of that fact and even approve of it, considering that existing laws on sexual content in manga are predominantly used to control teen girl's manga.

No need to worry indeed, the models are happy and are in good hands by top notch agencies with professional support staff.

also, there's plenty of women staff and even ones who call the shots in this idolatry segment Cool

I'm happy they're not messing with a gravure industry. It's a national treasure that needs to be preserved Cool I wish America had an equivalent of them, it'd be pretty nice.

I'm happy that Japan didn't create an Orwellian society that punishes "thought criminals".

They did that in the 1930s and it ended with their defeat at the end of WWII.

"NTV Report On The U-15 (Junior Idol) Boom In Japan"

  • A news crew follows around 6th grader Mai Sasaki, an 11-year-old junior idol whose father films and creates her photo books and DVD’s. In one particularly creepy scene, the cameraman father tells a lingerie-clad Mai to get on a bed and make a “lion pose.” He later jokes about how big her breasts have become.

They return to Mai Sasaki’s father, who is looking at internet sites devoted to junior idols. He mentions that some of the U-15 idol photos and DVD’s are practically porn. Apparently he doesn’t want to turn his daughter into such an idol, but he must make her photos and DVD’s a bit sexy if he wants them to sell…

After a quick look at some fans in their 30′s who love buying junior idol stuff, we are shown a photo shoot Mai Sasaki’s father is doing for a 13-year-old idol Misuzu Ashida. The girl tells the reporter that she is hoping that she can become a mainstream star through her junior idol DVD’s. Her mother, who is at the photo shoot, has a similar view and thinks that what her daughter is doing is similar to how many actresses have done sexy photos or love scenes in movies to advance their careers. The mother and daughter say that there is a limit to what they’ll approve of, at which point they’ll supposedly say no. After the release of Misuzu’s DVD they travel to Tokyo to hold an photo shoot event to which all her fans were invited.

There are, or were, magazines focusing on similar images in the U.S., at least until recently. One local store kept getting a "swimsuit" magazine each month in the 1990s from their distributor that was all under aged "models" in very suggestive poses. They never put the magazines out for sale and returned them each month to the distributor for credit.

I imagine online sites have driven most of these kinds of magazines into shutting down.

Pretty disgusting stuff but not illegal.

Ugh, those two things aren't anything alike. American Gravure would be if those guys and girls on Nickelodeon and Disney shows made DVDs where they interact with fans and pose in swimsuits or other outfits.

T&T is so distasteful and horrendous with pounds of porn-star looking make-up and hooker outfits. It's hecka creepy. No class at all.

A lot of gravure are creepy and no class at all. (We have someone who has some mags over here. Laughing ) Gravure spans a wide spectrum; it doesn't have to do any interactions. Like pr0n, there's some that imagine themselves to be Playboy, then there's some that's......... everything else...........

(And we don't think anybody would want to see those guys and girls on Nick and Disney do it.)

Stop, please just stop I'm going to be sick thinking about this shite again. I've seen things that can-not be unseen and the fact news outlets like CNN don't even bother to cover shite like this pisses me off.

Welcome to 7 years ago, which is a long long time ago.
Also, the DVD company that handled Sasaki was shut down.

Years after that, that segment of idolatry only improved (they get Blu Ray releases now!!!) and got cleaned up (no more adult-style clothing & poses for example).
