I'm thinking of buying the Oh My Goddess manga but I'm wondering about the 2nd edition releases.

Are the newer volumes of the manga in the same format as the earlier volume 2nd editions or are they the same as the old versions? If they do match the 2nd editions at which volume did they swap over from the old style?

Basically can I buy the newer volumes now and have them match the 2nd editions or would I need to wait till they got re-released again?

The most recent OMG releases (from Dark Horse) are the same size (form factor) and type as the newest releases, currently they're bouncing months with a "previous" release (1,2,3,4) and a "new" release (22,23,24,25) on alternating months. The newest releases are following a standard for the newest updated releases in Japan, with new cover designs for the first 3 and some color pages included. If you don't have any of it, definitely worth starting with the new releases and getting the current for consistency and quality. If you already have the old ones, it's your call if you like the larger pages enough to not be interested in the color pages. If you're wondering from a "completeness" standpoint. The first 3 at least have new covers and color pages that were not part of the original releases. (maybe the 32 page floppies had the color, not 100% sure on that either way but the covers are definitely new since Kodansha did a re-release of the first 3 volumes in Japan and Dark Horse imitated that for the re-release over here)

EDIT: I believe the new format begins with vol. 21, http://www.darkhorse.com seems to confirm that. Re-releases are up through vol 5 or 6 in the new format. Also, I stand corrected. vol 1 & 2 have the "new" covers, vols. 3 & 4 have original covers and vol. 5 has a new cover (in the re-releases) since Skuld wasn't introduced until vol. 5 and the Japanese ReVamp cover had Skuld on vol 3.

The floppies most definitely did NOT have color (I should know, I have almost all of them Wink ), and the new 2nd edition trades have TONS of chapters that were not included in the original "flopped" trades. The original trade "Oh My Goddess! 1-555-GODDESS" had chapters 1, 14, 17, 18, 19, and 20, whereas the new first trade has chapters 1-9, so these new editions are definitely preferable. There was all kinds of screwiness with Dark Horse's original release that you can read about here, or you can just get the new versions from Vol. 1 and not have to tear your hair out.

Oh snap they have extra material not previously published? I figured it was solely them re-doing them in the traditional format. I figured I'd eventually get them but since I had the material already new titles got more of my attention. Well seeing as how I just got $50 bucks for helping to fix a friend of the family's laptop I know where most of it is going now. Very Happy

Ok, so I can get volumes 1-6 and 21+ in the new style and then wait for 7-20 to be re-released.

Looks like it might take a while though. Very Happy

As they say; "Good things are worth waiting for." I also hope that now that the recent arc with Lind and Goddess battles is over with they can back to a nice volume or two of normal events. The slice of life part is one of the biggest draws for the manga, for me at least, so now that we've had a nice dose of magical battles we can see more of the daily problems of the auto club.

There was all kinds of screwiness with Dark Horse's original release that you can read about here, or you can just get the new versions from Vol. 1 and not have to tear your hair out.

While I CERTAINLY recommend getting the newest versions as noted, IF you were getting the original trades, the 1-555-GODDESS collection (which is missing chapters) was "re-issued" as 3 volumes which included the missing chapters in the original size format (as noted in the text on the page jgreen linked). So if you've bought the updated books (Wrong Number, Leader of the Pack, & Final Exam) you have all the chapters, but if you want consistent size format throughout your collection AND color AND book-to-book correlation with the Japanese volumes, then buy the newer ones. (If you look at the list linked by jgreen, the "Sora Unchained" story arc ends at the end of vol 20, so when the new arc started in vol 21, they just changed to the new volume system and size format)

But to sum up, if you have the updated vols. 1-3, you don't NEED to buy the current versions to have the entire STORY, but I'd recommend switching for other reasons.

I haven't seen an Oh My Goddess! thread yet, so it's good to see one. I have all 34 Japanese releases, but what you guys are talking about seems to be confusing, which makes me appreciate being able to read Japanese, keep it simple Confused

The new books also have notes, commentaries and sometimes interviews in the back of each volume which are new to these releases. I found them quite interesting.

I never picked up the older releases because I figured/hoped a cheaper and unflipped release would come someday and I ended up being right. So now I'm buying the re-releases along with the current releases.

34 volumes you say? So if we're up to 26 that's 12 more to come. At 3 a year roughly that's 2011 before it's done?!?!? That sucks so much. Crying or Very sad

My understanding is that....
- The series is still ongoing in Japan, so there will be more than just 34 volumes
- Once the new, unflopped editions of earlier volumes are done, DH's release rate is supposed to increase.

They can't even get current releases out on time, for many series, so pardon me if I don't hold my breath on their claim. Rolling Eyes Would be nice if they did but I think I have a greater chance of being tall, dark, and handsome first.

Yeah, there's really no word on when the end will be near, but I'm sure at some point the cow's going to be milked clean. No word on when 35 is coming out as well.

Isn't OMG the longest running manga in Japan? As in, still currently running and published.
