Are these somewhat low sales normal for this time of the year?

Or is my idea of normal, high and low sales incorrect to begin with?

Ouch. That's a 22.4% dropoff - looks like I was right in expecting it to do poorly and preording every volume. This really is the sort of show that needs fans all over the world to buy the Japanese release.

Not really a slow sale season, unless it's a really bad season. But this seemed like a decent season. There usually is a drop-off between Vols. 1 & 2 though.

It's possible that the tax increase that started this month in japan might've had an effect on these sales.

Another extremely busy week next week, why can't japan spread out the releases more?

It'll be interesting to how 'tesagure!' will perform next month. From its really bad ranking in early autumn, to the top 20 on Amazon Japan. It estimated at 4.2k~, but its sudden boost on Amazon might mean its underestimated.

Pretty much everybody I know agrees that Winter 2014 was one hell of a depressing season for anime sales. But it'll finally be over next week with the last batch of v1s coming out. Even though, aside from 'Tesagure!', they will all flop.

This is actually one of the worst seasons we had in years, aside from Hoozuki(which will have a 14k~ average) everything sold below 10k, and only a few series will reach a 5k+~ average. Hell, aside from 'Tesagure!' nothing this season made it into the top 20 on Amazon Japan.

Just a side-note, big drop-offs between v1 and v2 only happen when v1 includes some really good extra's(event tickets or a figurine).

I doubt it.

Why aren't the Japanese otaku buying Sakura Trick?

That has nearly every element that's attractive to them that should be able to bridge them towards yuri! Was Haruka's and Yuu's relationship explicitness and boldness scare them or something?

Because male otaku don't have a self insert. Haruka is cute and all, but for male otaku not having a self-insert bland male character who they can pretend to be makes it hard for them to picture themselves with her. It's a cute show but was likely to be a low seller from the onset.

Is it really just that case? It doesn't seem the otaku need to "self-insert" every time a new "cute girl doing cute things" show comes around.

Yeah. Girls und Panzer had no male self-insert. Hell, it barely had any male characters. Yet it was the top-selling show of its season.

Still, a pretty disappointing week, but at least Engaged to the Unidentified's kinda selling.

Yuri seems to have an extremely niche market while cute girls doing cute things or "moe" infested shows probably have more appeal to males and females i'd guess.

It's always kind of baffled me. Before I started following anime sales I figured yuri was one of the top selling products. Life is cruel Crying or Very sad

I share this same thought, I think this has to do with the tax hikes that happen in Japan a few weeks ago, yeah it just as I predicted, the tax hike is going to hurt the DVD sales including anime. The tax hike in Japan already hurt PS4 sales. It's going to get worse if Japan's tax hike goes up 10% next year.

You have no proof that the tax hike had anything do with this week's low sales. Winter titles where already doing horrible before the tax hike even happened. Implying that the bd's will get a huge drop because of a 3% tax hike is just ridiculous. Would you be so kind as to not spread this kind of wrong information?

Its not like DVD sales are important to the late-nigth tv anime industry.

Well blu-rays are very expensive (and overpriced) in Japan, add the tax hikes, and you might have something like what we're seeing on the chart. I believe many Japanese have now shun luxury goods after tax hikes. Also if the tax hikes has managed to cause PS4 sales in Japan to sharply decline, then isn't it possible the tax hikes could've hurt the blu-ray sales, we might not have evidence but I think it's possible that the tax hike could've maybe cause this.

A) You can't compare the obsessive niché fan-market of anime to the mainstream market of consoles. Its apples and Oranges.
B) I already said this before, but you ignored it, winter 2014 was already doing horrible before the tax hike was even implanted.
C) Its only a 3% tax hike.

Meanwhile, spring is doing rather good. Espcailly with love live! v1 being estimated at 64k~ on Amazon Stalker.

The Chuunibyou watchers I know on Twitter boldly assert there won't be a third season based on the (supposedly) tepid response to the second. Does selling 5,000 BDs of volume 2 bear that out?

It does not rule out the chance of a 3rd season, but its not high enough to guarantee it, which tends to be around 10k+, and even then you have a few exceptions(i.e Haruhi).

But this is a very basic explantion, but it'd take a long while to explain when or why shows get sequels and what you need to pay attention too.
