I just read the first volume of A Centaur's Life and I really enjoyed it.
I do not understand why some people are concerned about chapter 0 (the first chapter in the book). There is nothing prurient or sexual about it, and I do not consider it to be gratuitous. The girls did not just suddenly decide to look at each other's genitals because they thought that it would be exciting. Considering that Hime seems to be more innocent and impressionable than the other girls she had good reasons for being worried and the other girls were concerned about their friend. And after the subject was brought up they also started to wonder if they were really normal. I consider chapter 0 to be rather sweet and innocent. It is also rather funny, especially at the end. I did not see that punchline coming. And why is anybody talking about fanservice? What is it that is supposed to be fanservice? Is it just seeing the word "vagina" in print? To me the kiss in chapter 1 is a lot closer to being fanservice than anything in chapter 0. And near the end of the book you get to see nipples in two drawings of a female centaur taking a shower. I am glad that nobody is complaining about the kiss or the nipples, but I cannot see why anybody who is not bothered by them would be concerned about chapter 0. My only negative thought about chapter 0 was that it probably would have worked better later in the story after we knew more about the characters and their world. But since it was written first, as an independent story, it makes sense to have it in the front. I found the rest of the book to be a lot of fun. If it had normal people in a normal world it would probably still be a decent slice of life school comedy, but the "monster" characters and the world that they live in are what make it really good. Aside from really enjoying the story I also liked the extra pages showing things like how the different species get dressed and how a centaur sits on a toilet (there is nothing gross or offensive about it, and it is a western style toilet). I am looking forward to seeing how the world and the characters develop. The author seems to have thought about the history, and even prehistory, of that world. It will be interesting to see what he does with it. |
