I don't even think the original vita was bulky or heavy, so yeah I don't see the point of this. I'm pretty sure everyone that wanted a vita already has one, and judging from that broad stroke sweep over the highlights of their catalog, I will not be joining that club. I'm perfectly happy with both my 3ds and 3ds XL.

I'm pretty sure that Sony thinks you're wrong! Even the 3DS is still getting good hardware sales for a device which 'everyone has'. I think particularly with how the Vita works as a remote device for the PS4 for all games will give the Vita a good bump. Also IMHO it's only finally now that the game library is getting interesting, at least for a JRPG freak like me.
The sad thing about the new version is that it now has a standard LCD screen. The origional Vita's screen is simply awesome!
@Emerje: There's nothing stopping you importing a Vita TV You can get them from play-asia at around $135 USD. The games are not region locked so you don't have to worry about that.

I to am sad to see the Vita OLED screen go, shame manufacturing costs are still high.
Hardware specs aside, give us some solid games like MH, Kingdom Hearts, and 1 or 2 others and I'm sold.
Access to the entire Gaikai library would be cool to

The original Vita has a far superior screen so the image quality will be far superior. The graphics won't be better, but the image will be.

Unless you understand Japanese, there's no reason to import a Vita TV. It only accepts Asian PSN accounts, and the since the device hasn't launched in the west, most physical western releases haven't been patched for compatibility.

And yet we still complain. It's been like this for decades.

What's been like what for decades? This is the first time Sony has had a major piece of gaming hardware only get a Japanese release. It's one thing to make games that are only available in Japan, but something entirely different to leave hardware over there.
And I know they said they were going to look into a western release for the PSV TV, but with all the attention and demand it got they really should have made that the priority over the slim PSV.

About time they bring it over. But why the heck did they bundle it with that game, I would much rather save 20$ and get the system for 180$ rather than having the headache of reselling the stupid game on ebay or something....

Yeah, sony would think I'm wrong, but that doesn't mean that they're right
That aside, the point of my statement wasn't to say that it's been out long enough for everyone who wanted one to own one, but to emphasize the fact that the vita's sales have been lackluster from the jump and really haven't improved much, thus the "everyone who wants it probably already owns it" sentiment.
The 3ds is a different story because despite the fact that it was a slow starter, it quickly picked up steam after its first year, and it was only once that started happening that nintendo started including alternate editions such as the XL and the 2DS. With the onset of more and more desirable titles coming to the system, not only are more people wanting it that don't have it, but people who do have it are double dipping on different versions of the system (i.e. the XL, 2DS, LE versions of the system).
Sony's ploy is to add features (remote activity with the PS4) and release this new "slim" version to up their abysmal sales, not as a response to people actually giving a crap about the system.

The OLED screen is absolutely beautiful. The Persona 4 Golden intro is captivating to watch.
