ANN has several hostnames that have basically the same content. For example, www.animenewsnetwork.com / www.animenewsnetwork.com.au / www.animenewsnetwork.co.uk depending on your country, or www.animenewsnetwork.com / fast.animenewsnetwork.com depending on whether you're a subscriber.
Users tend to cut and paste urls from whatever hostname they're on and post that in the forum. But we don't want readers to be sent to a different hostname just because the one who posted the link happened to be on a different hostname. So all links to ANN are normalized to use the hostname that you're currently on. This led to some problems with urls that should not be normalized, like todo.animenewsnetwork.com/workspace/show/ann-5 or cdn.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/api.xml?title=4658 or when someone really meant "go to this other hostname". So we introduced a way to manually cancel this normalization by writing these urls as http://todo!animenewsnetwork!com/workspace/show/ann-5; but this is too hard to use for common cases. So now, only urls for the "regular" subdomains are normalized, and only if they are not the frontpage:
