*SPOILER ALERT*
* This is your final warning. Spoilers ahead!* Hi everyone, I know many people have not seen the newly released Madoka Magica 3rd movie, Rebellion. However, for those who have, I would like to open this discussion to gage people's interpretation of the movie. I walked into the theater with a pretty good grasp of Japanese language. However, the technical jargon gets lost on me sometimes. It seems that a lot of the key plot points were explained in dialogues and not so much with visual cues. Beware of plot spoilers if you keep reading. MY REACTION AFTER WATCHING THE FILM Unfortunately, I didn't come out of the theater with a smile. I found the visuals to be very confusing, something like the last half of "End of Evangelion". The plot seemed to require the audience to grasp the dialogue details in order to appreciate it. As for being a work of animation, the visuals to me didn't seem to have a good flow. Visuals just seemed to jump from one strange looking piece of art to another. For someone that has to rely mostly on visual cues, it was difficult to follow. One scene that was clearly enjoyable was the fighting sequence between Mami and Homura. Anyway, I had hoped for another great emotional ride with great drama and action, but that's not what happened in my opinion. I think it could have been executed better. Here's my hope for another season on TV than another movie. MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE PLOT spoiler[- The energy in Homura's Soul Gem has dwindled after continuous fighting with the Nightmares - The Incubators contain Homura's soul/mind inside her Soul Gem and create a barrier to prevent the real world from noticing, especially from Madoka, who is now in a higher realm of existence - In the artificial world inside Homura's Soul Gem, she plays out a life where Madoka and her friends are still around - Homura notices something odd about Madoka that makes her believe something is wrong - Homura and (artificial?) friends manage to "change" one of the witches(?) in the artificial world to join their cause, and it transforms into a Magical Girl(?) - Kyubei explains to Homura something about how she is some kind of experiment(?) for the Incubators in this new universe created by Madoka (I got lost here) - The Incubators' plan was to lure Ultimate Madoka into rescuing Homura from the artificial world inside her Soul Gem. When Ultimate Madoka arrives after the friends break the barrier, the Incubators try to grab/capture her(?), but their plan backfires - Homura awakens from her deep slumber and returns to the real world... from here, I'm totally confused...] Does anyone mind shedding some light into this? Sorry, but I don't know how to do that. But the word "Spoiler" is written several times including the topic title. That seems to be sufficient warning in my opinion. |

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I read up on spoilers of it. From what it sounds like, spoiler[Homura overthrows Madoka of her God-hood (Godoka) and creates a new universe that makes her human again. Kyubey creates a separate universe inside Homura's soul gem that's separate from the world Godoka created (which turns Homura into a witch) and then used that as bait to try and capture Godoka. His machinations end up backfiring though because it ends up giving Homura enough power to overthrow Godoka. Homura/Madoka have essentially become Lucifer/God, except in this story Lucifer succeeds.]
spoiler[Many people have speculations about the reasons behind Homura's actions (which were abrupt and not really explained, but there's enough context apparently for fans to draw their own conclusion). The ending of the first series had a hopeful, uplifting message because Madoka was willing to ascend to a new level of being to stop witches before they could be born. However, Homura may be convinced that there's no way that Madoka's sacrifice could result in her being happy because she's alone and absorbing all of that grief. Kyubey's interference gives Homura enough power to create her own universe that envelopes Godoka's universe, and she's able to give Madoka her life back. She did it because she loved Madoka and, tying back to her original wish, she wants to redo her meeting with Madoka and protect her. She creates a world that protects Madoka's happiness at the expense of Madoka's wish, memories, and free will (so it's a twisted, selfish kind of love, opposit of Madoka's selflessness). And so everything comes full circle, except the roles are now reversed with Madoka as the transfer student and Homura as the infirmary representative.] spoiler[Some criticism I've read of the movie: One of the main concerns regarding the new ending in "Rebellion" is that Homura's action renders Madoka's sacrifice and message of hope meaningless. The ending from the anime series and the previous film loses its impact and this causes concern among the fans who became emotionally invested on Madoka's message of hope. Another problem is the devolution of the Homura character, starting from a weakly girl and evolving into a strong magical girl, Homura becomes what many consider to be a strong underdog who overcame many obstacles to protect what she treasures. However, in "Rebellion" we see what appears to be the beginning of the unraveling of the Homura character - the fall of a strong magical girl into what it is presumed to be a form of madness.] If you'd like to read more, go here: http://wiki.puella-magi.net/The_Rebellion_Story/Spoiler Overall, I'm really looking forward to seeing the movie myself. I personally prefer the message of the original series, but this movie addresses some thoughts that I had in regards to the original series, so I'm really interested in seeing its execution. Hi Willag,
Thanks a lot for that!! That's what I needed, because it was driving me crazy all day, lol I had dinner with a Japanese friend of mine tonight who is a crazy Madoka Magica fan. According to him, the movie was "freaking awesome." Apparently, a lot of the key plots points are in the dialogue. After hearing that from my friend, I decided to reserve my final opinion about the movie after another viewing, which it may deserve. |

Having seen it, I agree with pretty much all of the spoilered criticisms above (though I do want to see it again to see if I feel the same way the second time through). My opinion at present, though, is that the TV series/2 movies should not have a sequel. The original story ended on a spectacular high note, with the cosmic and personal paying off beautifully together, and there just doesn't seem to be much you can do to continue it without spoiler[undoing what made the original so special. The new movie also has about two endings too many, and just turns into one dang thing after another near the end -- which isn't an end at all, but just a setup for MOAR!! It reached a point where I didn't care anymore.]
Disagree about the artwork; I thought it at least looked fabulous. Anywho, for the time being I'm tossing this in my "Just Treat As Fanfic" file, along with the Rurouni Kenshin Souseihen OVAs and all Alien movies after the second one. |

Just a silly fun idea...
But I think it would be cool if the producers made a fun alternate universe movie where Homura accidentally jumps into the future of another timeline where she encounters an older, more confident, and combat battered Madoka : ) Then we can finally see Madoka kick some ass with her awesome bow. |

Indeed. The original plot in Madoka is just something really special. Though I guess that treating it as a fanfic written by the author of the original may work. Of course, like the new EVA movies (specially the third one), the quality of the author's work probably declined (I haven't watched the new Madoka movie so I can't comment). |
