It says a lot that one of Future Diary's most sympathetic characters is spoiler[the one that murdered at least half of the students in a middle school in the second episode.]
Also, the fact that a character shot missiles out her skirt (or pulled a motorcycle out of it... both? I forget) in the second episode should be an early warning sign about the direction the show is headed. Anyway, the show did become kind of a mess, but I found it pretty enjoyable, particularly spoiler[how much of an utter bastard Yuki became] even if the execution of that character development was rather abrupt. |

The Future Diary is really intriguing me, its a series I want to watch! Can't get much worse then Deadman Wonderland surely, in terms of gore?

Deadman Wonderland is much better done in my opinion. Future Diary is very poorly written I could only force myself to watch it for so long before I gave up (I think I lasted to around episode 20). The only one on this list that interests me is Princess Knight which is thankfully on Youtube (I was surprised to see it on there). I'm starting to get curious about anime's history so this might be a decent show to try. In my search I found there's very little anime from the earlier decades of anime's history streaming. |

I at least managed to watch all of Mirai Nikki, Deadman Wonderland was just vile.
Anyway, as Hitokiri mentioned, the most sympathetic and closest to a 'hero' we end up with is the goddamn mass murderer who blew up a middle school and pulled a motorcycle out of her skirt. But you know what? She's an amazing character. She deserved every bit of the spoiler[good, happy ending] she got. We salute you, Ninth. |

DeadmAn Wonderland isn't that bad, it had its flaws but was a pretty decent premise and did well with what they got. I'd love a second season. Future Diary appeals as I am always interested in Battle Royale-esque plots and the use of the diaries sound interesting, although it does seem like it may over-do it on plot twists. Ahwell still hoping for a UK home release. |

Made possible because of the boy's heart she was given, which of course you've mentioned. Maybe Princess Knight was groundbreaking at the time, but when I read the manga recently it feels like the most anti-feminist "feminist" fairy tale I've ever read. I couldn't get past the first episode of Princess Knight, and not because of the cheesy dub. I know it's an older anime, but so was Rose of Versailles and I was able to get into that just fine. The Future Diary manga only has 12 volumes (10 of which were released). I think the anime did a pretty good job of adapting it and I agree that the manga/anime goes off the rails near the end (with the whole Minene thing).

The entire section on The Future Diary had me bursting out laughing. The writing just made it seem like you were extremely bitter, indignant and furious with the majority of the show. I have to admit that when I first watched it I was a little confused with the whole thing, but after watching it again, it made about as much sense as it needed to. On top of that I haven't seen very many anime that were able to satiate my desire for no-holds-barred action the same way as The Future Diary. Maybe it makes me a horrible person, but the fact that they didn't spend most of the show whining about how terrifying one single death was(like way too many shonen anime), actually made this show so much better to me.

I think the anime had an episode that focused exclusively on Uryu. Since she's my favorite from Mirai Nikki, I was quite happy with that.

There's a colossal difference in budgets and quantity of effort going into anime from the 60s to the late 70s. I like older anime but I find most pre-78 shows that aren't sci-fi hard to swallow, and Princess Knight is from 1967. Bamboo's summation of why anyone would want to watch it fits exactly with my line of thinking, most of those old "classics" should only be examined for historical context, as deriving any real entertainment out of them these days is tough. I'd rather do that through film, though, because they're shorter and actually animated. To me, it's like trying to force yourself through films of the 20s and 30s that people don't really care to remember. Personally I thought Zombie of the Dead 2 was a lot better then season one, and I loved season one. But we got more characters introduced. I preferred the whole Chris arc versus the Master of Night arc. We got more Sera action. I mean there is really little to complain about other than the lack of more episodes.

Future Diaries is one of the best Anime ever. It was the best of it's season and is right up there with Death Note and other amazing anime. As someone who has reviewed over fifty anime and watched probably double that. This is a must for any ones collection who likes amazing artwork, storytelling, and fun. It's not for those who think anime is about ecchi, moe, and mechs, and super sci-fi.

Future Diary did become a mess but only for a few episodes but then it pulled itself together. This happens in many of the best series, nothing is perfect. Now it seems to fall apart a little bit at the end, but when comparing against anime in general 90% of anime do this so I can't take that in to account, I also don't take that into account because the ending has some really great and beautiful surprises.

I watch all of Future Diary, but i think it's because of this kind of story telling is able to make the viewer finish the story compare to Deadman Wonderland. Deadman Wonderland is just boring, after two eps i gave up. |
