I heard horror storries about the Tokyopop version of Kare Kano, but I also remember reading how they've recently started doing a much better job. I was wondering how good are the more recent releases of Kare Kano from Tokyopop, and is there a certain volume number from where they start getting decent?

A good portion of Kare Kano is translated so poorly (they went so far as to mix up Saiyuki characters in a reference) that I'd say it takes away from the enjoyment of reading the manga. But it does improve if I recall (I'm way behind); certainly isn't cream-of-the-crop in terms of rewriting, but definitally a noticible improvement.

The usual cries of "It's a bad translation" should never be taken so seriously as to not enjoy a series. Since I don't speak or read Japanese, I could care less what the Japanese said. I enjoyed the English version I read, overlooked the typos, and kept buying the volumes.

I wouldn't suggest not buying the series because of the translation, but on the other hand I'd certianly warn people about it just because of how bad it is. It isn't even about that typo they made; the writing is simply pathetic and totally amaturish. It especially hurts the earlier volumes because of the nature of the manga's storytelling (based more on words). Like I said, I'd still buy the series if your interested, and especially since the writing does become pretty decent eventually but just be warned. I don't expect everything to be Studio Proteus quality, but stuff like the early volumes just shouldn't be sold as proffesional quality work.

I got a question relating to Tokyopop's transaltion. It's either that or I'm missing something Razz
in volume 16 act 76 page 87, it says: "It's been a few years since that day"
In the story, it is situated when spoiler[Arima has left the hospital after he cut his hand and has told Yukino everything about his past. He is now walking back to school with Yukino for the first time since long]
But I don't really know what they are reffering to in that sentence?
Are they referring to the fact that a few years have passed spoiler[ since he left the hospital and confessed everything? that would be a bit strange since everyone is still going to the same school and everyone was already in their last year. So that would be quite impossible]
But if it isn't referring to that, what day is it referring to then? Can somebody explain this to a dumb guy like me Anime smile ?

No, only a little bit of time has passed since Arima spoiler[sliced open his hand] when that line appears. I'm pretty sure Arima is either referring to: 1) the day he met Yukino or 2) the day Arima was completely taken over by his repressed past (last few pages of Vol. 9). Either one of those would make sense in this context, I think. But it is a very vague line... Confused

Some Tokyopop titles are extremely notorious for mistranslations. Initial D suffers the most apparently, ranging from grammical mistakes to sloppy car technicals (which still exists in the latest Volume, where the Toyota Altezza/Lexus IS200 has the model designation from the Honda Civic Type R from the SSR storyarc.)

someone on another forum give me an idea for an alternative explanation.

In the manga, there a few moments where Arima and Yukino comment on the events and their decisions (from the perspective when they are already adults and look back at past events). EG: spoiler[Yukino saying after she said she no longer aims at first place, "it is something i would truly regret". Arima saying in that same volume as posted above, only a few pages sooner "i would later find out what she meant by that".]
Perhaps this is something like that?

What do you people think?
