Hello, I have been looking at some CLAMP titles like Tsubasa and xxxHolic and I was wondering if you think that I would like them (CLAMP titles). First off I am a guy. I'm not a big shojo fan (I don't like Fruits Basket) and sometimes will get bored of a manga if there isn't any action for a while. Basically I was wondering if I would like titles by CLAMP, and if so which ones. Thanks. Smile

You might enjoy reading XXXholic. It's a seinen manga and it deals a lot with addictions and their dangers. XXXholic isn't "action-packed" but there's lots of suspenseful plots dealing with the supernatural and spirits. It's not quite as good as some of Clamp's older titles but it's still entertaining and in addition to the darker moments there's still plenty of comedy. There's even a bit of romance in the series but it's not quite so in your face if you don't like romance. Tsubasa might not appeal as much to you because it's a crossover series starring the CCS characters Sakura and Syaoran. Tsubasa can work as a stand-alone series, but it'll probably be more appealing to you if you're a Sakura x Syaoran fan. Tsubasa does have a bit more action than XXXholic but there's a lot more focus on romance despite being a shounen manga. You might want to check out CCS before readig Tsubasa but it's a shoujo manga and although there is plenty enough action (at least to me there was), not every chapter is about action and it has a lot of fluffy romance, so you might not enjoy it if you don't like shoujo manga. However, IMO CCS is required reading before Tsubasa in order to get the most enjoyment out of the characters. But being a guy doesn't matter with shoujo manga. I'm a 21 year old male and I love shoujo manga. In fact, Sailor Moon is the whole reason why I'm an anime and manga fan. But even if you hate shoujo manga, you should still read Clamp's Magic Knight Rayearth and X/1999. It will forever change the way you look at shoujo manga.

Thanks, it's not that I hate shojo manga, it just doesn't hold my interest very well. I also like some romance(ish) series like Ai Yori Aoshi, Inu-Yasha, and Love Hina (If you consider that a romance haha). I was also wondering about Tokyo Babylon, Chobits, and RG Veda. Also if I would start xxxHolic do you think that I should start Tsubasa also?

First off Tsubasa technically falls under being a shonen manga because it is serialized in Shonen Magazine in Japan. It has really deep ties running within it, with spoiler[the main character sacrificing something ultimate to rescue one who is dear to him.] Great action, some comedy here and there in CLAMP fashion, I think that Tsubasa is a very enjoyable series.

I personally adore the story of Chobits but it does get a little tedious and boring at times. I know a few people who gave up reading it. As for Toyko Babylon, I love the story, but it falls into Clamps "almost Boys Love" category which I know is a pretty big turn off to a lot of men who like shoujo. The characters in TB also show up in X/1999, which is an awesome series, even though it isnt finished yet and sadly I cant say if it ever will be.

I have never read RG Veda, although I hear its also very good.

I think you should try Tsubasa Chronicle. It's a really good manga (try the anime), sad at time but it's mostly shonen. Chobits is an okay show but if you wanna laugh a lot (which was what i did). The romance in Chobits wasn't that... expressive let say. But in the end it was a good manga. Also try X/1999. I haven't seen it but I heard that its really good.

I enjoy RG Veda, though storytelling-wise it definitely does show that CLAMP were still very new when they started it as it's not always the most cohesive storyline but it is enjoyable. I actually keep finding myself forgetting how enjoyable I find it, until I'm reading it again and remember that this is actually pretty cool.

I also second the recommendation for xxxHolic and Chobits, those are my two favourite CLAMP manga. Tokyo Babylon is good, as long as you don't mind the pairing of Subaru and Seishirou (nothing explicit but it is pretty much impossible to overlook).

Suki. It's one of those manga that just whenever I feel down, and I pick up my Suki tankobons, and everything is alright again.

I'd also recommend X/1999. It's easily one of CLAMP's best works, imo. Although it's a shoujo manga, there's also plenty of strong violence in it, so it can appeal to boys, as well. The only problem is that if you really dislike shounen-ai, you might not enjoy it as much. The anime series is essentially the same story, but the shounen-ai is toned down, and the fighting isn't as bloody. Oh, and the anime actually has an ending.(the manga got discontinued at the climax...)

I actually recommend the anime of X over the manga by far. I didn't really enjoy the manga for the mostpart because it has odd pacing, while in contrast the anime is one of my favourite series. And not just because it has an ending, though that definitely does add to it.

Also, there is a movie out there which is one of those things that is so bad that it's good. I don't recommend watching it unless you are familiar with the manga or series first though, because otherwise you won't be able to keep track of who is he at all, except probably for Kamui, Fuuma, and Kotori (probably Hinoto as well).

I'm going with marie-antoinette about the movie. You MUST read the manga or see the TV series first. Otherwise you will not understand it. But, I have to say that the movie is just visually stunning. I enjoy it for itself not that it really follows the X storyline all that well.

I just finished the TV series and would second it (I'd love to discuss it but am really trying not to because this is the manga section). I don't think I'll get into the manga because from what I've read it got discontinued until further notice at an extremely fustrating point in the story. I'd agree that the battles make it guy-friendly for any of our male friends for whom the fact that some of the main characters are gay isn't an issue. Besides, for letting us have our Subaru angst the boys get rewarded with Kanoe cleavage and Karen's occasional appearance in *ahem* work attire, so it's all good. Very Happy

I'd also strongly suggest reading Tokyo Babylon first to get the full effect of one of the subplots.

You definitely can appreciate the stuff with Subaru, Seishirou, and Hokuto more if you've read Tokyo Babylon (you can watch the OVA as well, but it was made before the manga was finished and doesn't really do the series justice). But, as previous stated, TB is fairly blantant with the shounen-ai so you'd have to be able to handle that aspect of it.

That's something that you'll need to get used to, if you're gonna read CLAMP--most of the series' have either implied Yuri or Yaoi.

Cardcaptors: spoiler[The guy that Sakura had a crush on was in love with her brother. Also, Sakura's cousin is stragely close to her, as far as relations with your cousins go (and otherwise)]

Chobits:spoiler[.....Why would Minoru want to make a Persocom EXACTLY like his sister? Maybe I'm being an idiot, but a guy who loves his sister that much is a little uncommon. Just IMO, though.]

Magical Knight Rayearth: spoiler[I hear there's some strange relationships between the main characters.]

X/1999:spoiler[Kamui and Fuuma are sorta.....close...no?]

xxxHOLiC:spoiler[First off, Yuuko moves around people like if she was making a move on them--she's always touching their faces or something, whether the person in question is a guy or a woman. Also, her servants, Maru and Moru...there's a pic of one on top of the other in the first volume, not to mention that Moru...or Maru--can't tell the difference--kissed Yuuko on the face. Then again, I just might be nuts.]
