FREE! really is an amazing success for KyoAni and not just because of anime sales,I heard that LNs are selling good and their CD sales are just great.I am thinking that sequel will be created.

That's a quite impressive sales figure for Free!. I suppose that's an experiment that's been vindicated.
I wish that I knew the demographics of the people buying it. The 'common wisdom' that has been recited before (well, maybe just by that one guy, you know the one, him) is that fujoshi don't buy home video releases with the same vigor as male audiences, especially blu-ray. It'd be worth knowing whether Free! has been a success among male fans or if this is a change in supposed buying habits of female ones. I leave open, since I hardly know enough to do otherwise, the possibility that, "fujoshi don't buy blu-ray," was more myth than reality and that other merchandise are selling proportionately better. |

Apparently a number of fujoshi started breaking that rule for Tiger & Bunny, so I'd expect a higher rate of BD versus DVD sales for anything afterwards if that's true. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if KyoAni's first foray into fujoshi-bait had a similar effect(Free!'s first-week numbers are about 1K more than T&B's).

Ya know, if you think about there are a few factors that fell right into KyoAni's favor like premiering it on summer season where's much less competition (not to mention atmospherically appropriate). I can't even imagine what will happen if Free premiered on Fall where there's Kuroko's Basketball also plus a couple others fangirl-aimed shows. And there's the obvious "filling in the void" the female audience wanted for years. So yeah, I expected to do great and glad it did; hopefully this will lead KyoAni to tackle even more ambitious titles. If you ask me, I think KyoAni's next work Kyoukai no Kanata is going to be the biggest wild card they've done since that can go either way; I certainly don't want that one to fail, or be at "Tamako Market" levels of success.
Now whether Free's success will start shifting anime trends towards more female-oriented shows from here on out seems likely. That I bet is where a lot more male fans are afraid about considering KyoAni tends to be on top on shifting trends; look how the success of those Key titles, Haruhi Suzumiya, and K-ON! led to!

Actually it had somewhat a rival this season (Brothers Conflict) though if you were to make a comparison Free! is way on top. Even though Free! makes me uncomfortable quite a bit i still can't help but watch it every week. It's a fun little series that shouldn't be disregarded because it's "manservice" xP. |

That shift had already started. Heck, didn't UtaPri and Kuroko no Basket already drive more reverse harem/otome/BL-undertone to be made/announced? One could even say that the first season of Hakuouki which was a success itself (~15k per vol) could have started the otome/reverse-harem/BL train. I called the "shift" to be happening long before Free was even announced (by basically saying there was a large previously-untapped base of home-video buyers with relatively little to win them over). So it would seem misleading to say that Free 'started' the shift, but it certainly will help it along and likely increase the growing influence of female anime BD/DVD-buying otaku. |

People just seem to believe that all trends start and end with Kyoani. As usual their place in the industry is way overestimated by people that are desperate to make idols out of them. At best as someone else pointed out Kyoani has all but perfected the art of timing and pandering along with SHAFT, timing things for low volume and low competition seasons to take advantage of a lack of competition and emerging trends in order to churn out sales hit after sales hit, but IMO at the cost of shows that are anything approaching particularly special or cutting edge. The only Kyoani show I'd even begin to attach such a distinction to would be Haruhi while everything else just feels like following the market and having absolutely no ambition of their own. Just look At Sasami-san, it defied all expectations with its ridiculously high sales. Or just look at the large amount of shaft-series that managed to sell over 10k! Sunrise & Kyoani are nothing to compared to Shaft when it comes to making hits. |

Free! is definitely not my favorite of the season but I am so happy it is doing well so I can laugh at all the sexist morons who claimed it would fail because women don't buy anime.
