Almost every single anime theme I have ever heard has had nothing but positive, uplifting lryics. Are there any that are depressing and/or morbid?

The lyrics to Red Fraction (OP for Black Lagoon) are kind of evil-sounding, but they mirror Revy's personaltiy and way of life almost perfectly. People dismiss them as "cliche" and "throwing together random cool sounding English words", but I actually thought they were pretty unique and made sense, and I liked the Volga reference too.

Witch Hunter Robin had some pretty depressing theme songs if I remember correctly. Also, the third and fourth openings for Fullmetal Alchemist have sort of melancholy lyrics with upbeat music. There's also Rise from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, which is beautiful as well as meaningful. Serial Experiments Lain had some really down music too, but that's to be expected.

A lot of the more gothic, vampire-darkness-evil oriented series have more depressing and negative songs. Trinity Blood is another I can think of, and I'm sure there are more....Heck some of the songs used for NANA are depressing, in an uplifting sort of way....

"Komm, Süsser Tod" from EoE, I believe, falls into this category as well. The lyrics express the regrets present (especially in terms of Shinji) when the song appears near the end of the movie. I found it a bit strange, as well, that though the song's tone is depressing, there's a sense of satisfaction that the world's coming to end. Could just be me, though.

Ha, I forgot about that one. The song is so happy and upbeat sounding, and the lyrics are really morbid lol. It fit the tone of the movie, that's for sure.

The ending theme for Gankutsuou, "You Won't See Me Coming" isn't exactly uplifting...I'm not sure if it's exactly depressing, but it does talk about the acts of revenge that is the main plot.

"We Were Lovers", the opening theme of the anime, is pretty moody, and definantely not a 'happy' song.

This might fall into the "sad" or "depressed" category. The music is beautiful too Smile

What's it For
Ghost in the Shell SAC - Emily Curtis / Yoko Kanno

I'm not too sure that I can go much farther
I'm really not sure things are even getting better
I'm so tired of the me that has to disagree
And so tired of the me that's in control

I woke up to the see the sun shining all around me
How could it shine down on me?
You'd think that it would notice I can't take anymore
I had to ask myself,
“What's it really for?”

Everything I tried to do, it didn't matter
And now I might be better off just rolling over
Cause you know I tried so hard but couldn't change a thing
And it hurts so much I might as well let go
Sad

I can't really take the sun shining all around me
You'd think that it would notice I no longer believe
Can't help telling myself,
“It don't mean a thing.”

I woke up to see the sun shining all around me
How could it shine down on me?
Sun shining all it's beauty
Why would it shine down on me?

You'd think that it would notice I can't take anymore
Just had to ask myself,
“What's it really for?”

Doesn't the second opening song for Baki the Grappler seem a little depressing? I mean it's a Dir en grey song after all and the lyrics don't seem very uplifting.

By the way it's Child Prey for those who don't know.

The first NHK ni Youkoso! ED, Odoru Akachan Ningen, is an kind-of upbeat song mixed with kind-of sad lyrics. Here are the lyrics for the TV version, for Japanese readers:

I already have it written like this on my hard drive, I'd translate it but I'm too lazy at the moment ;P

It isn't exactly depressing, but more bittersweet.

Kanon 2006.

(sorry, can only remember about half of it right now.)

Hmm, I don't know, maybe you've watching the wrong sorts of anime?

Yeah, that one is a great example; I can't think of many other depressing songs that work in with the story so perfectly. One of them, though, is "Aozora" from AIR -- for those who've seen (and liked) the series, that song alone is enough to bring back a wave of emotions. Then there's the bittersweet "Hoshizora no Waltz" from Rumbling Hearts, which is a sad little reflection on past love. Both the OP and ED from SaiKano are downers, even though the OP has upbeat music. Too bad the Viz DVDs don't tell you just what they're singing Rolling Eyes The OP of Shinigami no Ballad fits with the morbid tone of the series, with lines like, "I cannot touch you, but I can kill you."

The Fruits Basket OP, "For Fruits Basket," just gets sadder and sadder the more you see of the series and the more you learn of the Sohmas. The OP of Elfen Lied, "Lilium" is a haunting Latin piece that gets put to effective use throughout the series. (EL's closer, on the other hand, doesn't fit with the series' tone at all, which is also cool.)

There's also the OP of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, another piece with dark and negative lyrics.

eX-Dream, the opening theme for X TV, has negative lyrics.

translation from http://animelyrics.com :

Of this world, the end is coming
Dreams and hopes do not matter

Inside your heart, you are sleeping
but you will not wake up
Feel the hand of a future that cannot be changed

Burning for your life
This life will burn out someday, even if you try to cling to it
(for the perfect dream)
Drowning in my dream
Even if it's remembered,
a dream is only a dream
You are star light

I think Yume wo Sugitemo, the ending theme for Infinite Ryvius, also has somewhat negative lyrics, although it sounds amazing. I'll post the lyrics translation later on. Anime Lyrics doesn't have it, and I don't want to put out my DVD's at 12 AM when everyone else is sleeping.

"Last Regrets" from Kanon 2006.

I won’t say ‘thank you’; I’ll leave it in myself forever
Goodbye, after a dream that doesn’t overshadow it, quietly lands

I forever, forever embrace the pieces pouring into my hands
And I already know the strength of laughing until the end

Good morning, waking up is blindingly bright and sad
Goodbye, our inexcusable weaknesses were fine

The common kindness in us moves around like flowers, like love
I can’t hear the quietness of the low clouds waiting for the wind anymore

I forever, forever embrace the pieces pouring into my hands
And I already know the strength of laughing until the end

I won’t cry anymore, I won’t cry anymore, I won’t cry

T-T
