Oh man, I've seen this one.
I think it's kind of funny. Loses itself toward the end, though. I think my favorite part was when she fought Darth Vader, who turned into the terminator. I also liked a lot of the pokes at religion, which is a favorite humor type of mine. |

Something that struck me about this show is how harsh it gets for the heroine in the second episode.
spoiler[For the sake of fighting evil the heroine kills the boy she likes (without realizing it) as he was the leader of the villains, willingly defies her father’s demand that she not transform into the superhero therefor incurring school transfer and the indefinite separation from her best friend, and even God himself speaks to her and asks that she turn her back on him by accepting Buddha’s power. This shows a rather poor understanding of how Christianity works but the point in context is that she has to give up what she cares about the most. This heroine doesn’t seem to be left with much for herself after her victory.] Not many superhero shows seem to take the idea of sacrificing for the greater good as seriously as this one. |

With titles like this, can we really blame people for not knowing what this column is actually about? It's too bad this sounds like a "funny premise, dull execution" series, though "magical girl beats people up with her butt" seems to lack a special something as far as wacky anime premises go. |

With a title like Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman my first thought upon seeing this on a store self would be "must be a porn."

I saw this a couple of years ago, I thought the first episode was very average but I have to admit that I quite enjoyed R.

Played this with a group of friends one time a few years back, but we didn't pay as much attention to it as we did Crying Freeman. I feel like a lot of these I probably wouldn't bother to rewatch unless a BD came out; fat chance.

I kind of like this anime. I know it is not good but is amusing in that campy hipster-y way. I did like when they starting making a lot of pop culture jokes in it. Also, it is just kind of weird (which I like).

About four years ago when we reviewed this, the observation was made that this is the sort of series that has an up-or-down breaking point moment for the viewer: a point in the story where your reaction to the scene in question summarizes how you process the work as a whole.
The scene in question is the confrontation with her dad, who is really quite despondent of the fact that his daughter is in this situation. To go into further detail would be to deprive YOU, true believers, of the experience that is watching this cartoon for yourself. And we certainly wouldn't want that. |

I watched both of the fansubs when they came out a few years ago and found them amusing enough, but not really worth a rewatch.

The remark about a show like this being rowdy crowd fare is important. In '94, if you were running an anime club, a bit of "wacky" H could ensure the crowd would stay after something somber like Windaria or PSME. To that end, you had stuff like Gotaman, Lemnear, Outlanders, etc. Screen time for well drawn glutes hasn't fallen since...

Yep, I would've thought the same, I would've thought it was a hentai from looking the title name. |

I agree completely. The title "Pile of Shame" makes me think of my anime backlog, perhaps things watched long after the big craze for them has passed. Maybe they've passed into obscurity, maybe they've become 'classics', but somehow they got missed along the way, or purchased and never watched. For instance--I just watched Cowboy Bebop for the first time earlier this year (I didn't have cable back when it was on tv, and didn't have money to blind buy things). And it IS a shame I didn't see it sooner:-3 . To me, the Anime that have generally shown up in the the Pile of Shame would better fall under a title like "Random Anime I Discovered on the Internet", "Fansubbed Only" or perhaps, if you wanted something with a little more flair, "Anime Obscura"? On the other hand, I believe most of the titles reviewed here have been deemed fairly poor or laugh-worthy because they are so bad. I recall maybe one or two of the first few as being considered 'worth the time to watch, too bad it isn't available in english' --though I'd have to check back through the old reviews to say for sure. I definitely remember one about kendo that sounded interesting. So maybe this pile of shame is supposed to represent the crap of the anime world? With a few exceptions? Either way, it is a fairly fun column to read, and the odd shows you find on the internet are...well, interesting. |

I don't know why you ask this when you perfectly described the idea behind the title of this column right at the beginning of your post. Like the title says, this is literally Justin looking at the multitude of titles he has at his access & going "Huh, I haven't seen this one before," or "Hmmm, I haven't seen this in years... I wonder if it's like I remembered," or, quite simply, "Wow, look at the name of this title! How have I never watched this before?" Like the old saying goes, though, most of what's out there is "crap", so it's pretty obvious that Justin's going to come across bad or just mediocre titles more often than the true gems. Musashi no Ken was even mentioned by Justin before doing Pile of Shame as a title he might do a Buried Treasure for (I don't remember the exact episode of ANNCast right now). Anyway, looking at what Justin has looked at for Pile of Shame, here's the rough breakdown of the how many titles were good, bad, or just downright "WTF": Good: Tokimeki Tonight, Musashi no Ken, Blazing Transfer Student, California Crisis (with a little "WTF"), Blue Sonnet, Moshidora Bad: Genesis Survivor Gaiarth, The Diary of Anne Frank, Kenya Boy (also "WTF"-quality), Yagami-kun's Family Affairs, Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman "WTF": Harbor Light Story, Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Story, Rebirth of Buddha So let's see... Pile of Shame so far has 6 "Good" entries, 5 "Bad" entries", & 3 "WTF" entries which Justin seemingly couldn't really call either good or bad because of how weird or unintelligible they were. And, even then, I honestly could have put Gaiarth, Yamada-kun, and even Gautaman under "Mediocre" because Justin didn't really say that they were "bad", per se, but rather that they were either uninspired (Gaiarth), dated (Yamada-kun), or didn't deliver on the concept (Gautaman). Let's be honest, the only title Justin covered that was even Buried Garbage quality was Kenya Boy (maybe even Anne Frank, but I remember people defending it in the comments). Meanwhile, about half of the positive-reviewed titles sounded like they were Buried Treasure quality (Tokimeki, Musashi, & BTS), with California Crisis & Blue Sonnet being on the cusp of BT-worthy but just missing it. Of course this could just be the way I see it, but anyone who honestly is trying to say that Pile of Shame has been mostly crappy titles is either lying to themselves or blatantly ignoring the stuff Justin has praised in the column. At the very least, the "Good/Bad" ratio is about even, with "Good" winning out just barely. Plus, there are the downright "WTF" titles that are hard to point down as either Justin giving them passes or are putting down. |
