Okay...I'm going to try to do this simultaneouly on two forum communities... We'll eventually end up with a list of top 10 best 2006 anime tracks. Right now I'll be taking nominations.
Anyone that can help tally stuff please PM me.
RULES FOR NOMINATION:
1) This is for 2006 songs only. The animation you're suggesting the song from MUST have some part of its initial airtime in 2006. For movies, the RELEASE DATE IN JAPAN must be in 2006. Everything else will not be counted. Please do some research and make sure the song you're nominating comes from something in 2006.
2) You may nominate any kind of track: OP, ED, Character CD, Inserts, OSTs, etc.
3) Please nominate ONLY 5 TRACKS. I (and maybe some other people) will count them up, and the 20 most nominated will be on the voting process.
4) When naming the song, please follow the following format. Nominations that don't follow that format will not be counted. Please also make the nominations visible and keep your comments isolated from them.
<SONG> - <ARTIST> - <ANIME>
Nomination phase will proceed until DECEMBER 15TH. And please, please, please follow the rules so I can have an easier time tallying up everything. Thank you very much.

1) Bokuen Desho Desho? - Hirano Aya - Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
I don't know how to describe it...it's one of those songs that are just inherently perfect. There's nothing in it that tires me even after a hundred listens. Whether it's the composition, Hirano Aya's voice, or the anime that follows it that makes it so great I don't know.
2) Hishoku no Sora - Mami Kawada - Shakugan no Shana
For such a lively song, the lyrics are so smooth and softly sang. Very nicely done.
3) Sakura Kiss (String Version) - Hirano Yoshihisa - Ouran High School Host Club
I would have nominated the original, but the string version is just heavenly. I haven't heard strings so alive and smooth in a while.
4) Player - Origa/Yoko Kanno - Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid State Society
Origa's Russian vocalization again fits an atmosphere for mystique and drama like GITS's.
5) Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni - Eiko Shimamiya - Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
This is the only OP/ED track I've listened to that actually conveys a forboding sense of mystery and creepiness. Awesome.

2) Youkoso! Hitori Bocchi - Pearl Kyodai - N.H.K ni Youkoso! OST Dark Side ni Youkoso

1) "God Knows..." by Aya Hirano, "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya." This is the type of rock song that American bands would kill to write.
2) "Mayonaka no DOOR" by Liu Yi Fei, "And They're Off! Powerpuff Girls Z." The bass in this song wins every time.
3) "Sakura Kiss" by Chieko Kawabe, "Ouran High School Host Club." The song just fits perfectly with the series. It's joyful and triumphant .
4) "Party Party, Join Us Join Us," artist unknown, "Crayon Shin-chan." In a rare feat there is actually a good English dub song for an anime. Club-worthy.
5) "The World" by Nightmare, "Death Note." A dark rock tune for a dark, yet smile-enducing anime.

I'll provide my 5 nominations, reasons, and also my favorite lines from the song.
1) Wish by OLIVIA - Nana.
I don't really have any musical reason for why I think this is a great song....It's just really upbeat, energetic, and incredibly fun to listen to. I thought the first OP, Rose, was pretty good, but this song completely blew me away. Olivia also has a really great voice, and I can see why everyone in the series is completely blown away by "Reira Serizawa", even Nana herself. "Can you feel it now Can you feel it now!"
2) Hishoku no Sora by Kawada Mami - Shakugan no Shana.
I've already rambled on about why I love this song in my MyAnime list and many other threads; don't really feel like repeating myself over and over again. "Shoshite Kono Sora...Ataku somete..."
3) Lost my Music by Hirano Aya - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Out of the two insert songs of Episode 12, I thought this one stood out more. It was more upbeat and cheerful than God Knows, and that made Hirano Aya's voice fit the song more, since I thought that her voice suits this kind of song best. There's also an insane guitar solo toward the end, which I thought was better than the one in God Knows. "I still I still I love you! I'm waitin' waitin' forever!"
4) Message by YOKO - Soukou no Strain.
This song rocks! The synthetic melody (I think it's the square), synthetic bass, and voice complement each other really well, and make for a very mysterious and great song, and the tune itself is just really sweet. Plus, very synthetic songs just work really well in anime, and usually make great songs when complemented with relatively high voice singers. "dare ni mo shirezu fukuramu sono Shigunaru..."
5) Kimi e Mukau Hikari" by Arai Akino - Zegapain.
Another mysterious synthetic song. Similar to Message, but more on the haunting and mysterious side rather than sweet and enchanting. Less treble as well, and is so awesome that I watched Zegapain just because I was convinced that a series with such a great song couldn't possibly be bad. Great blend of vocals and background, and strings too. "Dare ka...miteiru bijuuru..."

1. A Little Pain - Olivia - NANA
This song makes me cry. Olivia has such an amazing voice and an equally amazing range. I'm not as fond of Wish, though.
2. Date of Rebirth - Origa - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society
My second favorite Origa song (first is Rise), and probably my favorite song on the SSS soundtrack. I wish I could nominate that whole soundtrack, though, because it's just so beautiful.
3. Player - Origa - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society
4. Somewhere in the Silence - Ilaria Graziano - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society
5. Take A Little Hand - Gabriela Robin - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society
Guess what I've been listening to for the past five days?

Not to burst a bubble but isn't this technically another list thread that is so highly discouraged on ANN forums? To compile a list of best anime songs is a good idea, but it's only based on opinions of those who respond to the thread and post nominations. What are the basis are you using to judge the merits of each song and do you have the approval of the mods to do something like this? As long some are providing reasons why they've nominated songs it should be okay, so I'll do the same. It's just that I don't expect much out of building a coherent Best of 2006 list.
But here's my nominations:
1) "Michishirube" by Yuumao from Kasimasi ~Girl Meets Girl~ (ED)
The emotion in this song as complemented by the beautiful piano chords really sets the tender mood for the show at the end of each episode. Very few of the episodes end with a cliffhange so a nice slow ballad like this is really easy on the ears.
2) "Silly Go Round" by FictionJunction Yuuka from .hack//ROOTS (OP)
The vocalist for this song simply has one of the most angelic sounding voices in recent memory. The song has a good beat and has some great guitar rips during the instrumental part.
3) "Nocturne" by Eufonius from Kasimasi ~Girl Meets Girl~ (insert song)
There are few words that can describe the immense good feeling hearing this gentle and emotional song gives me. The music in the song is entirely piano music which accents Eufonius' beautiful voice perfectly.
4) "Puzzle" by Round Table featuring Nino from Welcome to the NHK (OP)
I was pleased to see this group do a song another comedy anime. They did the opening song to Chobits and "Puzzle" has some clever lyrics.
5) "The World" by Nightmare from Death Note (OP)
This band really reminds me of L'arc~en~Ciel. The opening of Death Note is a great rock song deserving of a great show.

Wow, there were so many songs I liked in 2006, so it was very hard for me to pick. For me, there was an extremely thin margin between those that made it, and those that didn't. Well, here goes.
1. Colors of the Heart, by UVERworld (Blood+ OP3)
This is such an addicting rock song. I've been playing this song over and over for the last 5-6 months, and it still hasn't gotten old. The OP3 animation matched the song very well, as well.
2. Face of Fact ~Resolution Version~, by Kotoko (Baldr Force EXE Resolution OP)
My favourite Kotoko song of 2006. Kotoko's my favourite artist, so I just had to nominate a song from her. I like the original version a tad bit more, but it was for the video game, and it wasn't in 2006. Oh well. =\
3. Player, by Origa (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society OP)
Beautiful, just beautiful. I would've nominated High & Mighty Color's 'Ichirin no Hana' instead if I hadn't heard this song a few days ago.
4. A Little Pain, by Olivia (Nana ED1)
I just had to nominate a song from Nana. I love the music in Nana, and this is my favourite song in the series so far.
5. Te wo Tsunaide, by Younha (Jyu Oh Sei ED)
This one caught me by surprise when I first heard it. I liked the guitar/piano mix, & Younha's voice sounded really nice. The whole song just sounded really beautiful to me.

Incidentally, what is this for, your own personal enjoyment, ours, or something else? Are the nominations going to be screened for something or voted upon by someone? Your calling them "nominations" tricked me into thinking this was part of some larger project than just yourself. If that's not the case, then really your title should just have read "What's your favorite anime music of 2006?"
Truly admirable, that no-list rule, innit, thanks to which we either get to read a load of pointless blah or nothing at all. Oh well. Rules are rules. So I promise that to my improper list-post above I will add my highly valued and carefully deliberated opinions on the subject matter, albeit at a later and as of yet unspecified time. And you, sir, should fill out and submit a 27b-6 in four copies before you ever attempt anything like this again.

Before I add my own list, allow me to remind everyone NOT TO MAKE LIST POSTS. That is, if you're going to make a list, you MUST intersperse it with a MINIMUM of text to support your choices. And intelligent text, at that.
Those are the forum rules, and you break them at your own peril.
Dewa, hajimemashou.
---
"Sakura Kiss" - Kawabe Chieko - Ouran High School Host Club
It's been a long while since I heard a song as genki as this one, and they're not my usual fare, but this is quite brilliant. It's upbeat, catchy and enthusiastic, and it catches the mood of the anime perfectly.
---
"Hajimari no kaze" - Hirahara Ayaka - Saiunkoku Monogatari
I've long had a weakness for anime music with a Chinese musical influence, and this is a fine example of the type. The use of the erhu, especially on the full-length (not TV-size) version, is quite fitting.
---
"Undine" - Makino Yui - ARIA the NATURAL
The sensitivity to the nearly unbearable bauty of existence in all its transience, aware no mono, is a central feature in Japanese art, and few recent series capture the positive aspects of this theme better than ARIA. "Undine" carries the listener along on this gentle wave of beauty.
---
"Higurashi no Naku Koro ni " - Shimamiya Eiko - Higurashi no Naku koro ni
One of the creepiest anime of the year deserves one of the creepiest musical scores, and boy, is this creepy.
---
"Don't Look Behind" -- EDISON -- Black Lagoon
Most people like the OP of Black Lagoon. Me, I'm captivated by the slow-paced but mounting tension of the ED, culminating in a musical assault.
---
There are so many others I could mention, but here's a list of my also-rans, in case someone else wants inspiration for nominations:
- "Utsukushikereba sore de ii" - Ishikawa Chiaki - Simoun
- "Fugainaiya" - YUKI - Honey and Clover II
- "Last Regrets" - Ayana - Kanon (2006)
- "Yokan" - Makishima Yuki - Tokimeki Memorial ~ only love ~
- "Shiawase no iro" - Ishida Yoko - Aa Megami-sama: Sorezore no Tsubasa
Such a list could be very long, but five is the limit... I shall be interested to see what the short list of nominees turns out to be.

It's a little personal project. I might continue to do it, I might not. If I don't, then whatever...this thread becomes "What's your favorite anime music of 2006?" like you said. It'll still be meaningful.
If this grows to something really big then I definitely need volunteers to count. What I'm trying to do is end up with 20 (or maybe 10) top nominations, then starting another thread with the list and asking everyone to vote for 3 at a time. It's just something cool to try personally. I'm not some illuminati out there trying to take over the world with a list of ten songs.
And yes, I just realized that I broke one of the rules myself. Sorry!

I LOVE the erhu. I've actually asked my (almost) in-laws if I could have one as a wedding gift, since I'm dying to learn how to play. I'm quite good on the violin, and not too bad on the cello either, so I hope I'll be able to pick it up before too long without taking lessons.
I have a bad habit of normally sitting out when anime first airs on television; I like to hear reactions and come back to titles that seem they would suit my tastes later. So I haven't heard as much music as the other people posting. If this were to take place 6 months from now, I'd no doubt be familiar with some more of the music the others are nominating. ^^; Oh well, no matter. I've heard enough to get by. My nominations:
1. "Take a Little Hand" - Yoko Kanno (as Gabriella Robin) - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society
Like Murasakisuishou, I wish I could nominate the entire Solid State Society soundtrack, but I feel this track sufficiently captures what it is about Yoko Kanno's songwriting that entrances me. I like that it's reminiscent of the chants that have peppered countless soundtracks throughout Kanno's career: "A sai ën" in Macross Plus, "Spiral Re-born" from Turn-A Gundam, "Diving" in Arjuna, and many others. But the vocalizations aren't as harsh, and the arrangement is stripped away to a refreshing simplicity, reminding me that behind all the instruments and beats and synths, it's really a good melody that makes a good song. Also, I'm a sucker for the mandolin.
2. "Theru no Uta" - Teshima Aoi - Gedo Senki
Frankly, I'm astounded I'm the first to nominate this. I have a soft spot for relaxing orchestrations, especially when accompanied by a voice as lovely and relaxing Teshima Aoi's. It reminds me a little of the pastoral Arete Hime OST, which is one of the best anime soundtracks ever released.
3. "Byakkoya no Musume - White Tiger Field" - Susumu Hirasawa - Paprika
I've been a fan of Susumu Hirasawa ever since I heard his work in Millenium Actress, and his collaborations with Satoshi Kon bring out his best. I adore his unique arrangements. This one's a little creepy, but still fun and energetic.
4. "Over Blue" - Katteni Shiyagare - Kemonozume
Responsible for my becoming a Katteni Shiyagare (who I hadn't ever heard of before, somehow) fan for life. It contributes to what is easily one of the best opening anime sequences ever with a toe-tapping jazz beat, energetic horns and strong vocals.
5. "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" - Eiko Shimamiya - Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Wonderful chanting and synth beats add just the right edge to Higurashi's creepy opening sequence. It does well to set the mood, and is the sole reason I sat through the somewhat-less-than-engaging first episode.

I'm not particularly fond of the vocals, but other than that, it's a great song. It really resembles modern experimental jazz and fits into the category of jazz that remains jazzy even with straight eighths the entire song (besides ballads). It's really unconventional during the beginning, but it kind of feels like the swing feel starts slowly pushing its way back as the song progresses. Plus, the trumpet player is pretty beastly; too bad he didn't get nearly enough solo time.
I guess if this is allowed, I'll cancel my nomination (are we even actually doing this?) for Lost My Music for this song. I almost want to add in Red Fraction too, but I'm not willing to give up any other songs on my list.

This song has been on repeat pretty consistently for the last couple of days. I think I've listened to it too much now - it is the soundtrack to all my dreams now. Time to listen to something else.

1. "Undine" - Yui Makino - ARIA The NATURAL
I had almost forgot about this song until abunai reminded me. It has been in my Top 5 favorite anime theme songs for over a year (from ARIA The ANIMATION). I really enjoy listening to all of the show's theme songs--they really have a calming effect.
2. "Boken desho desho?" - Aya Hirano - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
I'm really glad that Aya Hirano has made it big because of her role as the eccentric Haruhi Suzumiya; her voice fits the character perfectly. I love all the songs she done for the show, but I find this one particularily hard to get out of my head.
3. "Silly-Go-Round" - FictionJunction YUUKA - .hack//ROOTS
It was hard to choose between this song or "Kouya Ruten" from Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto. Like "Boken desho desho?," both songs are very addicting.
4. "a little pain" - OLIVIA - NANA
I decided to choose "a little pain" over "Wish" because of the way this song makes me feel. I think it's a perfect fit for NANA.
5. "Player" - Origa with Heartsdales - Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. Solid State Society
I've come to expect a lot from Origa, and she just keeps impressing me. Of course, I like all of the music from Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. When I heard about the movie, I became excited not only for the story but also for the music.
