Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend a horror/serious manga for an adult. I'm not looking for anything kiddyish or comical. Something serious with a dark plot or mystery... and not just gory stuff.

Obviously it has to be in the English language as well... Could anyone recommend a few? Would make ideal Xmas gifts. Very Happy

Thanks!

TokyoPop has a lot of good ones.
One I liked was called Haunted House. It's a single volume but pretty cool. Sabato (the main guy) is a normal guy but his family is all goth and creepy etc. It's more of a comedy horror but may be one your lookin for.
There's also I Luv Halloween that is just kinda twisted.
The bulk of what I read is TokyoPop Manga. I just checked their site and they have a search so you canlook by Genre and get a summary etc
http://www.tokyopop.com/manga.php?genre_id=6

Hope that helps![/url]

Mermaid Saga: When you eat the flesh of a mermaid, you can become immortal....or turn into a horrible monster. Yuta, who has been immortal for 500 years, meets fellow immortal Mana, and the couple wanders Japan seeking a cure for their "curse", wherein they stumble across all kinds of other demented souls hunting for immortality. Incessantly creepy, and you really get into the heads of the people the pair come across so it's got a very psychological edge. Only 4 volumes at $10 a piece, so a pretty reasonably priced series to jump into, as well.

Ogre Slayer: A young man born of a human mother and ogre father is born not with an ogre's horn, but with a sword that is able to slay ogres. He sets out on a journey to slay all the ogres on the planet, but when ogres are formed by the evil hearts of man, he's going to have a lot of work ahead of him. Much like Mermaid Saga, the lead character isn't the stars of the series so much as the fascinating people he comes across. An older series that might be hard to find, but at least parts of it are still available by mail order.

Both of these series do have a fair amount of blood and gore, but they are more psychological in nature than simply slasherfests.

I also recommend Dragon Head. It seems more like a psychological thriller to me than a horror, but some of the drawings and concepts are quite freaky. It places innocent teenagers in a dire situation, fighting for their sanity, while oblivious to the events taking place outside of the tunnel that they're trapped in.

I also recommend Monster.
I really like it, because it also has that mystery element in it as well. The characters are quite interesting too, especially the antagonist of the series, Johan.

Hellsing is good but kind of wierd. The plot goes off on tangents sometimes and there is kind of a lot of gore. I've been hearing really good things about Monster so I suggest that. Also, if you like a seroius mystery of sorts then you should read Death Note.

Hellsing! It's strange and INCREDIBLY violent, but the art and story are amazing. Probably the best vampire manga I've read, because the vampires (or at least one of them) actually enjoy being vampires and they don't get all angsty and wussy and stuff. Seras makes up for the angst with the uniform, though.

Death Note is also very good, but it's more of a psychological thriller than a horror.

Would the mangas you've mentioned be suitable for a female reader? As this won't be for myself. Hellsing is more for a male audience?

Would Death Note be worth checking out? As I've been given recommendations here and on other Anime forums. Wink

Hellsing IS for a more male audience, but I'd say female readers could enjoy it quite easily.

Death Note, while I haven't read it, is probably more of what you're looking for. I know the woman who runs the comic shop I shop at looks forward to that book more than any other, manga or otherwise, and raves about it constantly, and there are always pro-Death Note threads on this board. So yeah, give it a go!

"The Drifting classroom" although an oldie still a goody and although some material is derogative its interesting to see how the author unfolds the plot.

What about Kiseijuu (Parasyte in the US)? It's action and slightly horror, and it doesn't really look like it's intended for children. There's a lot of somewhat subtle humor in the form of dirty jokes and there's a lot of fights, some blood, and character designs are definitely far from the mainstream.

there are many different horror/serious type manga's out there
but it depends on your taste for example:

mind trip horror - boogiepop phatom

massive killing horror - battle royale

end of the world horror - dragon head

one shot horror/dark feel - goth

movie adaptions - suicide club

mystery "who did it" type Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

revenge - jigoku shoujo

even if you like blood and guts and lolicon at the same time - tokyo Akazukin

it all depends on your taste..and if somebody says hellsings is horror
punch them in the face its not horror buddy these titles are haha

Note: some of these titles are not out in the states but there yesasia and fan scanlations there for ya ^^

I guess horror is too broad a term....

I mean something which would keep the reader in suspense, so blood splattering and mindless killing is not really what I'm looking for. I would like something which keeps the user guessing like "who did this?" or "why did this happen?"... that kinda thing. Shocked So nothing like predictable or just all-out action.

Maybe I'm being too picky... but perhaps I'm looking at more of a non-teen mystery type manga with a hint of "scaryness"? A serious storyline/plot is a must.

I'm kind of edging towards the following:

Monster (Licensed? Purchasable?)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Licensed? Purchasable?)
Death Note

Will these match my criteria? Not childish?

If you're looking for something really psychological, Death Note is the way to go. It's dark and entertaining, but there's also a lot of depth to it. And plenty of attractive men^^
