I'm pretty sure the Hollywood World episode of Abenobashi has the most swearing of any episode of anime. In English, to boot. Smile

Want a fahking hot dog?

That's the example I was thinking of, too. Kouhei FTW! He must drop a dozen f-bombs in about five seconds. He's portrating an American at the time, too. Laughing Do the Japanese think we swear too much?

Did they really start to allow a**hole, though? I heard it once when watching Paranoia Agent, but I think that was a mistake. But if you've heard it more than once or twice, then I stand corrected.

I will concede that [as] is stricter with words and images than violence, but that just reflects our culture as a whole. If you look at what violence they can show, it's pretty much all but the goriest of scenes. So I never have a problem with word edits on [as] because they're fleeting and ultimately minor. Cutting violence/blood tends to confuse the action terribly.

They've allowed it on ATHF several times. And I remember them saying "shit" on Ghost in the Shell a few times unbleeped.

The most egregious and unnecessary swearing in an anime I can ever remember was Manga's dub of Devilman.

[Akira and dude enter an abandoned house]
Akira: "Sh--should I take off my shoes?"
Dude: "I don't give a SH**."

He seriously said the S word at least twice as loud as the other words in the sentence for absolutely no reason. A lot of those early Manga dubs were like that...I remember the original Appleseed being pretty bad, too, but I haven't seen it in years....

That's because it's not only profane, it's also blasphemy.

I don't know if it counts as blasphemy... aren't you basically saying that something is damned by God? But they do remove the "god", so obviously it's considered as crossing some sort of line when you add "god" to the front.

At certain times in the day, they'll block out the "hole" part when they say "*sshole." Stupid, I know.

This makes perfect sense to me. Both "ass" and "hole" are normal, legitimate words. "Ass" is originally (and still can be) a synonym for donkey and might be insulting when referring to a person, but not vulgar. "A**hole," on the other hand, is a vulgar word and therefore sometimes/often censored.

The important thing to note is that "a**hole" is one word, not two words, so there's nothing wrong with the entire word censored. Alternatively, if only the "-hole" part is censored, i.e. ass****, it is probably done to 'convert' the word into the more acceptable form "ass," which has evolved to also be considered an abbreviation as well as its original meaning.

I think most of Manga Video's early output could be classed as having unnecessary swearing, especially the more ecchi/hentai titles such as Wicked City & Urotsukidoji; I can remember the character of Taki in Wicked City saying the F-word drawn out as the American VA tried to fit that singular word with the lip movements the character was making on screen. A lot of the swearing was specifically added in by Manga Ent. to try and get a title rated higher in age classification to give it more street cred with the fans and clubs back in the 90's. Others did the same thing too but not as much as them. Some of it was completely unnecessary and would not have made the story, or plot any better with, or without. Indeed a few were ruined because of it in my experience.

Good swearing: Black Lagoon. They actually fit the emotion/atmosphere very well.

Don't forget that "God" is technically not a name. If we were to say, "Yahweh/Adonai/Elohim/Mitratron damn it," THAT would be "taking the Lord's name in vain", as those are the names that the Jews gave God in the Bible.

Yes, you're basically right that you can't be taking God's name in vain when you're not saying his name, but technically it's still close to that. I mean, you list Adonai and Elohim, which are titles meaning "Lord", not a name, so using those words would be the same thing as saying "God d*** it" in English.

And Metatron is not in the Bible at all, just as an FYI, and it was never claimed to be God's name.

If you want more, take a look at the Koran. In addition to Allah, Islam gives God 99 other names.

Still, S&P needs to ease up on "goddamn".

You are gonna have a hard time getting Yaweh-damn to catch on as a cuss word I think.

I think America will continue censoring blasphemy (splitting hairs over what Gods name actually and what counts as blasphemy is doesn't really achieve much...) seeing as it is a country where Christianity is a hugely prevalent religion and blasphemy is considered bad in that religion. In Islamic countries having images of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is considered wrong in a similar way to blasphemy and so it doesn't happen in Islamic countries.

I'm pretty sure goddamn can be said at all times on TV in the UK (not that I have any evidence at the moment to back it up.) There is basically no censorship. Programs shown after 9pm can have all swear words uncensored and before 9pm only milder swear words are allowed.

Well, we Americans need to stop being so uptight regarding cuss words and nudity on TV.

Just why can't we be less uptight? What do we think will happen?
