It all depends on how the words in question translate between languages. Translation's more of an art than a science if anything. |

It's followed by the word "damn." You can say the words alone, but not together. |

Really I never noticed that they didn't...must be because of religous problems so it doesn't really affect curse words in general. Even though I only know a few words, mostly due to fan subs, of the Japanese I would think that every culture has its own form of "bad" word somewhere in there language so not sure what you guys are fighting about though. I mean the examples you gave of bad words in the Japanese language seem like equivilents to me in their language as far as the seriousness of the word to them. I don't think you would find a direct equivilent of it or maybe you would...I don't know but its not worth getting all fired up or jumping on a guy about. Edit: Also did you mean Holy when you said this , as in "Holysh*t".
Do you mean just T.V. shows...I think you did just making sure since I hear alot of curse words during the day on movies but they do bleep out certain shows like Jerry springer and such. |

I simply said there are various forms of bad words and gave links to them. However, a lot of them, in the Japanese language, are context dependent. I also said that I never once heard a word that the Japanese refuse to say because it's "so bad." Nothing more, nothing less. As far as blocking out the word "God" followed by a profanity, yes, it is because of the religious factor.
No, I didn't. In fact, I never once mentioned the word "Holy."
I was referring to all shows on basic cable that the FCC regulates. Premium channels do not count as one must subscribe to them so the customer already knows what they're getting into. If you're really interested, you can contact the FCC about what they do and do not allow during certain time frames on basic cable here: http://www.fcc.gov/ As far as the topic at hand, Black Lagoon easily gets my vote as the anime that contains the most swearing. It's one of the very few animes that really caught my attention in terms of actual slang and profanity being thrown around. It's also one of my favorites so far. |

I didn't mean that you mentioned it but they dont bleep out "hole" so I am confused why you said they did. Thanks for the links.

At certain times in the day, they'll block out the "hole" part when they say "*sshole." Stupid, I know. I have no clue why they do it either.... The FCC has gone insane ever since the Janet Jackson incident. |

They do bleep out "hole" on basic cable and broadcast. Not standalone of course, but you can say "ass", you can say "hole", but if you try to combine the two you get "*Bleep*-hole".
Likewise, you can say "God", you can say "damn", but combine the two and it's "*bleep*-damn". |

It's worse to be an ass**** than just an ass. Common sense.
The FCC hasn't gone anything. They fined CBS $550,000 for the infraction, which was justified. Then broadcasters went nuts trying to avoid all objectionable words/images because they suddenly remembered that they can be fined for big money if the FCC gets enough complaints to look into something. Also, some groups used the JJ incident as a rallying point in lobbying for stricter standards and more family-friendly content on TV. No one in the FCC ever went insane. |

They're about the same to me. Also, if the 2nd word is so bad, why not block it out in entirety?
I'm not gonna touch this because it's gonna turn into a huge debate, throwing this topic way out into left field. Let's just say I'm not a fan of the FCC. |

The FCC and the networks' S&P departments all need to die and go to hell where they belong. |

Since most people would agree that ass**** is more offensive by at least threefold than simply calling someone an ass, by cutting the audio on the last part, the strength of the insult is diminished. Sometimes they'll just dub over it with a "jerk" or something.
Very mature. The FCC is only an extension of the concern parents have for their children hearing/seeing certain things on public television, governmentalized to provide an authority that stations have to respect. S&P departments are solely there to prevent the networks from getting into trouble. It's good business sense. |

Funny, [AS] started allowing "a**hole" to be said in recent years. Yet they bleep "goddamn"? Come on, they're just words! And since it's on late at night, leave anything alone short of an F-bomb! |

Did they really start to allow a**hole, though? I heard it once when watching Paranoia Agent, but I think that was a mistake. But if you've heard it more than once or twice, then I stand corrected.
I will concede that [as] is stricter with words and images than violence, but that just reflects our culture as a whole. If you look at what violence they can show, it's pretty much all but the goriest of scenes. So I never have a problem with word edits on [as] because they're fleeting and ultimately minor. Cutting violence/blood tends to confuse the action terribly. |
