Oh, wow, I actually started more than one thread in less than a year's time? Something must be wrong with me.
Anyway, I have a bit of a question. Okay, at AWA last year, I won the Orphen: The Revenge thinpack at ADV's panel. The entire second season, all for asking a couple inane questions (I believe that may have been the second year in a row I bugged them for Fumoffu and Elfen Lied box sets). Problem is, I do not own the first season, and have never even seen it, and as a result, this box set has still gone completely unwatched. Plot summaries I've read seem to suggest that The Revenge's plot is completely independent of the first season's—all I'd be missing out on would be character introductions—but I'm still not entirely sold on the idea of just popping in and watching season two by itself with no prior exposure to the franchise. So, ANN users, confirm something for me: do I, or do I not, have to have seen the first season of Orphen in order to be able to follow and enjoy the second?
On a similar note, I've been considering checking into Macross 7 purely out of curiosity (given its rather...infamous nature). I've seen the original Macross TV series, but not Macross Plus, Macross Zero, or Macross II. I know Plus and Zero would likely have nothing to do with 7, but is there anything from Macross II that I'd need to know in order to be able to follow and understand Macross 7?
Many thanks in advance.

Well, I saw both seasons (a miracle!!), and believe me, this time the 1st season is a MUST SEE before the 2nd one. The 1st one explains a lot of things that affect the 2nd season, and of course, it's way cooler than the Orphen:The Revenge (at least in this insignificant forum bottom feeder's opinion)
About Macross? Never seen it. Gomen nasai.
So, summarizing everything: Watch the 1st season A.S.A.P, 'coz it'll make the 2nd one easier to understand.

From what I understand, Macross II is not considered canon because it was made without the original creators' consultation. Someone else held the rights and wanted to cash in on the franchise. It's probably not necessary to watch it to properly understand Macross 7. And I would imagine that Macross 7 works as a standalone, much like Plus and Zero do, with only the foundational premise stemming from the original series, but creating a completely new story.

well i'll say that, Orphen 1st season is much better than Orphen: The Revenge and that you dont really NEED to watch the first one first but you must see the first one no matter what.

The first season of Orphen is better than the second, but the second is still good.
Get the first season because that will help you understand the group dynamics of the main characters along with the wrathful vengence Vortan and his poor abused brother/sidekick Dortin.

Hmm, that reminds me of how I won the first volume of Gravitation at MangaNEXT by my brother beating the guy at the table in Rock, Paper, Scissors. Little did I know that Gravitation was a yaoi title...

I reckon, with a little more character introduction and development, Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu would have been a better stand alone show than as a "sequel" (of sorts) to the first Full Metal Panic season.

You can watch Macross 7 on its own without a real solid backround in any other Macross franchise (I started on it fresh and have been enjoying it). The only thing that you would need to know, although I think it's more of a fan appreciation thing is that there are a few returning characters who play rather large roles (specifically Maximillian Jenius and his ex-wife Millia). 7 doesn't rely on it's predeccessor's history at all (some fans from what I understand even have trouble considering it as part of the story because it's so different from the original) so at least for me it's been an enjoyable show even though I haven't seen the original Macross although I intend to in the near future.

I've often thought that Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust can be viewed without having seen the previous movie or without having read the novels. It's constructed well enough, and the character of D is compelling enough, that there's really not much need to have seen the original film.
On the flip side of the coin, I highly doubt that it's possible to enjoy any of the Universal Century sequels without at the least a base understanding of Mobile Suit Gundam. The political make-up of the series, especially after Zeta, is just too dense to jump into.

From my understanding (someone correct me if I'm wrong), Macross II is a sequel to the DYRL? movie, but is considered to be unofficial because as what was already stated, it was produced without the original creator's consent and as such everything that happens in Macross II is considered to be non-canon, so nothing that happens in it is important to watch to understand the other series. Macross 7 is a sequel to the original series and DYRL? is like a movie that exists within the TV series as a "movie within a movie" (there's even a random episode where Basara and Mylene are acting for the DYRL? movie and Mylene plays Minmay and Basara plays Hikaru) or something like that. Macross Plus takes place in the same universe as the original series but it can be watched at any point after the original because it features entirely original characters and little connection to the original plot, besides being featured in the same time line and also including the Macross, thus it's more of a spin-off than a sequel and Macross Zero is a prequel to the original series.

Whoa, wait, ex-wife? Dammit, they just had to go and ruin one of my favorite mech anime couples.
Also, thanks everyone for your replies. Guess I'll have to make room in my budget for the first Orphen season before the second gets buried under any more dust.

I began watching Orphen 2 in the summer, but found it extremely hard to watch. The first Orphen series is a darker series with some twisted relationships between characters. The Revenge came across as light hearted fluff to me. I find it odd that they stack up fairly closely in the ANN ratings, so it could just be me.
Likewise I never finished Macross 7 since it came out at the same time as the superior Macross Plus. It also doesn't help that the last time I watched something that I didn't buy was back in the 90s, and I don't want to buy the R2s of a series that I found hard to get through.
My favorite way to handle sequels is to create a new set of characters in the original's world and slowly integrate the old cast into the story. This has been done rather well with shows like Zeta and R.O.D. It makes these series friendly towards new fans, but also is great for returning fans.
