what do those letters stand for
I'm a little bit new in this field and I watched some "OAV' but don't know what it means and why is it sometimes written OVA? is the latter one wrong? |

OAV = Original Animation Video = OVA = Original Video Animation = Direct-to-video. It's all one-in-the-same.

For future questions of this nature, please refer to the Lexicon to your left.

I think the more commonly used one is OVA (although it means exactly the same as OAV) and I remember reading somewhere that OAV was less preferred due to AV (= adult video/animation video) having negative porno connotations.
But yes, lexicon is your friend. And yes, they mean the same as each other. |

No biggie, I didn't know what the heck a lexicon was for much of my life either. Welcome to the forum. I've never seen any anime fan chime in from Amman, Jordan. What's the anime situation over there? |

I remember reading back in the day that OVA was original video animation, but OAV was Only Available on Video...as in not broadcast on network tv, but only sold in stores...Guess I was wrong -_-

"OVA" is used more often in Japan except titles and magazines produced/published by Gakken (学研), which insists using "OAV". When anime came to America, the term "OVA" was jokingly called "ova" (plural of "ovum", female organ where eggs are produced) so companies chose to call it "OAV", a term most Japanese companies don't use often because of easy confusion with "Adult Video" and "Audio/Video".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan Please tell me either 1) you were joking or 2) the city of your residence. I'll never let my child to be educated in the school system of that city. |
