I'm going to try to make this post not so list-like, but I'd like to mention a few anime series that I've heard about, what I've heard, and if they are worth seeing. If you are a fan of any of the below series, give a shout out and say if I should bother checking them out.

First is Vandread: A friend of mine says the opening for it is his favorite anime song. The storytelling and comedy seems in the vain of Slayers or Sorcerer Hunters but in outer space. So is it worth seeing in anyone's opinion?

Those Who Hunt Elves: I've heard mostly bad things about this series, and I think I did see part of one episode. The character design seems kind of crude and the plot choppy so I have been avoiding this show for quite a while. The music seems pretty upbeat though.

Genshiken: Now this is one show that I am kicking myself for not watching yet, especially since I have the first DVD (with an artbox). I've mainly heard that it's hilarious and a must for any fan interested in the otaku culture. I loved Otaku no Video and Densha Otoko and I get a kick out of the parody and poking fun at the whole fandom scene.

Some honarable mentions are shows that I've watched at least a whole episode but just have not got around to seeing much more of:
Niea_Seven
Gankutsuou

PS I hope it doesn't seem like I'm making a recommendation thread. The topic here is discuss anime you've already heard of and are interested in but just haven't seen yet.

I remember enjoying Vandread quite a bit, but I saw it like 6 years ago so my recollection isn't too good. Kind of your typical mecha sci-fi boy-meets-girl kind of thing here.

I highly recommend Genshiken. If you have any interest in Japanese otaku/anime culture at all, it will be a really fun watch. You'll probably end up wishing they'd have made a second season for it rather than Kujibiki Unbalance like the rest of us. The plot is realistic but also really fun and well-told. Although the protagonist isn't a very interesting character, I suppose that makes it all the more realistic. Definitely watch this one if you enjoy anime.

Those Who Hunt Elves is OK. It has a few large plot holes, and one large plot point they conveniently decide to ignore as the series moves forward.

Also, I didn't care for the English dub. The voice actors don't sound like they're putting much effort into the roles.

However, on the positive side, the series is very silly, in a good way. And, it made me laugh.

I'd say if you're looking for mindless entertainment and can find it cheap enough, it's worth a look.

The way you've worder the thread they might let this slip by so I'll psot. Not an attemtp to break the rules mods so be kind. I highly suggest anyone posting though make their post informative about what they say and not a list or ask for recommendations. Then they will lock it. I've seen both Vandread and Those Who Hunt Elves.

I found Vandread to be a nice worthwhile action title. If you're just looking for some nice space mecha action there ya go. It has the token big breasted beauty with an attitude. The silent girl with the tragic past and a heart of gold underneath her hard exterior. The goofy male who winds up with his harem, though not so much a harem here. The premise behind it though is a bit original. The set up is that men and women live on two seperate planets and and don't get along, each thinking the other is a body eating monster lol. Once you get past the first dvd it starts to really pick up. Season 2 was even better.

Those Who Hunt Elves is a decent title. It sometimes seems a bit choppy and doesn't flow very well in terms of the plot. It has ridiculous jokes though and it pretty funny. The fact that the main characters are on a quest to recover magical spell fragments, and to do so they must strip nude all the elves in the land is quite funny. Never seen the in a plot before lol.

I will second the viewing of Genshiken. I just finished it a couple of days ago and found it absolutley hilarious and very true in depicting otaku and anime/manga fans.

Everything from video games (both generic and ero), cosplaying, going to conventions, doujin obsessors, model kit building, anime discussion, pretty much any quality you'd expect from people in the anime/manga world seemed to be portrayed perfectly from my own experiences as both a fan and spectator.

But what I like the most are the seiyuu. It's practically an all-star cast and they did standout jobs playing all the different kinds of personalities within the group.

With the viewing of this, it makes me wonder, "just how much of this actually happens?" Is there a Genshiken-type club in the U.S somewhere? Do comic fests really get that big over there Shocked? Can anyone out there that's experienced one or both sides of the spectrum contribute some firsthand accounts?

I'm really curious to check out the manga as well now, and it's such a coincidence that a new OAV series was announced right after I finished this too. Great, great series!

I'm dying to see the Those Who Hunt Elves dub, since a friend of mine from college played a role in it. I'm sure it sounds terrible, though. ^^;

Hey! What do you know? I just finished it yesterday myself! Laughing

Odd how that always seems to happen around here... anyway, yeah, it's hilarious at times. It does start off REALLY REALLY slowly, the first half of the first episode is a bunch of seemingly random people just walking around staring at the club booths, I almost wanted to stop watching it right then. It really picks up in the second half of the second episode though. It also includes one of the funniest moments in recent anime history for me: When Saki spoiler[finally joined the club, the whole way she dealt with it and the look on her face was absolutely priceless Twisted Evil Speaking of which... I've watched that scene a few times, and I can't figure out exactly what she had done in the club room. Does anyone know? I figured she was having sex with Kosaka in the room... but I really don't know, nor why that would be grounds for her to leave the school (unless its simply because it would be too embarrasing... which if there was a tape of it... I guess it probably would be) ]

So yeah... if you're an otaku (whether you admit to the title or not)... I'd check it out. One thing I thought was funny, was that considering what kind of show it was, I figured I'd look up some doujinshi on the show (irony~ Wink ) and what do I see? A completely new girl Shocked Apparently she's going to be in the new Genshiken show, so what's the deal with her? Was she in the manga and not the first show for some bizarre reason or something?

The only one of the titles mentioned that I have seen is Those Who Hunt Elves (should I be admitting that in public?)

I agree with what has been said, especially murph76's post, but will throw in my comments as well. The show was originally two 12 episode seasons and IIRC some time passed between the two. murph76 mentions a huge plot hole, and if we are thinking of the same thing, what happens is that a major part of the plot that drives the first season to its conclusion is pretty much ignored in the second season. In most series, that would be kind of a major flaw, but I don't think you really watch TWHE primarily for the plot. The plot is just there as a vehicle to facilitate the jokes.

I liked the first season a lot more than the second. The humor in the second season was forced a lot of the time, and the characters seemed much more shallow to me. Don't get me wrong, this is no Haibane Renmei, but there is a certain charm in the first season that is missing from the second. I laughed a lot during season 1, but not so much with season 2.

I thought the dub was just horrible, not so much because of the acting, but because of the script. They tried really hard to make a lot of puns based on popular US culture at the time (I seem to remember a few Britney Spears references) and they just fall flat compared to the Japanese.

Despite my criticisms, this series is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. It's so silly, but it has a kind of heart to it that you almost can't help but like. It always makes me laugh. You certainly don't want to go into it with your brain in any gear but neutral, but for what it is, TWHE does its job well.

Ok thanks I'll check out TWHE (I'll keep that in mind when I'm in the mood for just senseless, fun anime) and definitley Genshiken. Not going to watch Genshiken yet tonight, it's time for bed.

But keep it going everybody, what are some other titles you saw part of or heard about but have just been putting off on watching and why? I'm sure there are plenty of people on the forum here that will either say, "watch more" or "yep, it's good that you passed that one up."
